Griz vs Sac st

Wow wow wow wow big win 73-71 criswell hits game winner with 7.2 seconds left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Made an otherwise boring Saturday night pretty exciting. Ellis really seems to be coming into his own. Good find; he didn't sound like much based on his stats.

whew, dodged a bullet. Good job Griz!

BIG win baby...BIG win...Now lets get back home and win two, and hope NAU loses it's touch...

UM is the only one of the top 4 that has played the other 3 (MSU,NAU,SAC) on the road.

MSU still has to play at UM.
SAC still has to play at NAU, UM, MSU
NAU still has to play at SAC, UM, MSU

Great game to listen to, i cant wait to listen to it on the Sac state site and see what that cry baby has to say about the lost

Big sky is heating up

Great win by the Griz. Just got back to my room from the game. The Griz played very good team ball despite not getting any calls. Griz were getting called for touch fouls while SAC was mugging the Griz all game and getting away with it.

Griz coaches outcoached Sac in my opinion, especially late in the game. Griz got Criswell a layup with 7 second to play, Sac doesn't even give their star Harris a touch on their last possession and end up shooting a desparation shot. By the way, that was offensive goaltending Sac got away with prior to that. 2 plays before that Criswell got knocked completey over and no call. 2 plays before that Ellis has a steal gets shoved away from the ball, no call, recovers and they call a foul on him. One official was making calls that were not even his calls, from clear across the floor. Griz would have won by 10-15 on a neutral court. Griz kep crowd out of the game prety much all the way. Sac seemed shocked at how quick Ellis is. On one play they had 3 guys chasing him all the way up the floor, Ellis went past all 3 of them for a layup. Martin did a nice job keeping his head after the airball 3 he put up. The crowd was on him the whole game and he never let it bother him. Krysko is intense, on the offensive basket interference on SAC that wasn't called LK put up the choke sign to the official, Tinks was there to settle him down and get him back in focus. I tell you, when Krysko glares it is scary!! I am glad they had Harris back so there are no excuses. Harris had 21 points and 9 rebounds. Sac would have beaten the cats with Harris I think.

strange line tonight for jordan hasquet: 24 minutes, one bucket, no rebounds, one turnover, three fouls. kyle sharp is an emerging star, while hasquet seems to be having his difficulties after that great pre-season game against stanford. if these two guys could develop quickly enough to help out strait up front, we'd really be a powerhouse. alas, they're both only freshmen.

strange too that chavez did not play at all.

one thing this team lacks: a killer instinct. at northern arizona they were up by 19 with the ball at one point, but let n.a.u.come back to win. tonight, they were up by 12 with the ball with about six minutes left, but just couldn't deliver the knockout shots.

overall impression: the griz were the much better team tonight. they have weapons, depth, coaching, and will get better before the season is over. i think they're the class of the big sky.

I don't think the pace of this game was well suited to Jordan. Hopefully, he'll return to form. He had been making some pretty good strides. I have a feeling Chavez may still be bothered by his foot injury. I was glad to see Mayes get some minutes. His opportunities should expand greatly next year with the departure of Criswell and Matthews. City(if you were at the game) and Backer- was Van Vliet in uniform? He hasn't been at the recent home games and I wonder if some sort of redshirt may still be possible for him. I assume Swift was dressed. I wonder if Krysko regrets the early season decision not to redshirt him.

City,

You obviously were not at the game with those comments about no killer instinct. The Griz never got a call down the stretch and the Griz got whistled for breathing out there. Not too mention the bogus no call on an obvious basket interference call on SAC. Even Sac fasn were laughing about that one. I sat in their section is how I know that.

Hasquet was the recipient of two of those ticky tack calls where he barely touched the guy, on the other one he was just a step slow. Take a look at how many more free throws they had than us and they were playing the pressure D, not the Griz.

NAU beats us by 3 by shooting 64% the entire second half. I talked to Tinks before the game and he thought the Griz had a letdown and once they lost the momentum in the second half it was hard to get it back. They did feel like they let that one slip away.

That being said i bet Sac wins more road games in league than NAU does. They have more athletic team and a lot more depth. They had no answer for Starit inside though, that kid is tough with that little baby jump hook.

Terrific road victory by the Griz!

But I agree with CityGriz. The Griz need to learn how to bury teams when they've got them on the ropes.

I think you are right on Hasquet, but he got two of the cheapest calls on him early and he never got into the flow of the game. Chavez didn't look all the comfortable in warmups, but I don't know if his foot was bother ing him. The way they were calling the game would not have been conducie to Mike's game though. Van Vliet was not in uniform unless I totally missed him which I think would be impossible. Sharp is coming along nicely too I think. Mayes only got a few minutes but got 3 big boards as did Sharp. That stretch those two played really helped the Griz I thought.

gb1: yes, we really did get homered down the stretch. krysko is nothing if not demonstrable, and i've often seen him engage in light-hearted pre-game banter with refs, media, griz fans, et. al. not last night. last night he really had his game face on. i don't think he liked this reffing crew--or maybe just knew what was in store for us.

my comment about killer instinct comes from observing how we play with big leads--starting with blowing a 19-pint lead at northern arizona. last night we got hot with just under ten minutes left, and blew a close game out to a 12-point lead. mayes and ellis had given us a dimension of quickness and athleticism that i think surprised and depressed their players--especially ellis with his press-breaking, ball-hawking ability. that raucuos hornet crowd packed into tiny hornet gym suddenly went quiet, and you had the feeling right there we really could have iced them. and twice we made stops with that lead, and twice we couldn't q-u-i-t-e get that one bucket that might have broken them down. included was one frustrating sequence where we missed a layup, then missed a put-back, then missed a tip--all at point blank range. it's when we have big leads that i'd like to see us with a bit more of the killer instinct.

but don't get me wrong--i love this team, and everything krsko has done to turn this program around. and remember, even though we lose criswell and matthews next year, this team is only going to get better over the next two years. you ain't seen nuthin' yet!

dot and dash hash: i hope we didn't make a mistake by blowing austin swift's redshirt season. this young man can play, and i'm worried that three years from now we might be regretting this decision as much as we did with jefferson heidelberger in football...eric van vliet is having trouble with his knee and will get a medical redshirt...i'm no fan of mick holien, but i must say, he does these broadcasts alone, with no color or even stat man that i could tell to assist him, and often in difficult circumstances, with people strolling right by at courtside, a heckler at his back, or a band blaring in his ear. i'll bet he's got some stories to tell...and thank you football for creating such a huge fan base for the basketball program to tap
into. i've been to games at sac state where there were probably five or ten griz fans in attendance, but last night we had a pretty good cheering section, including one handsome dude over on the sac state side.

1,279 were at the game. It was sold out. What kind of band box is that?
I am glad the Butte High Bulldogs don't have to play there.

Pathetic turnout...about the same for football some games

City,

Great response. I remember that sequence you refer to. I actually thought we missed 4 bunnies there, not three, but hey, who's counting. I have been in the "Hornet's Nest" as they like to call it a few times. The Griz really took the crowd out for most of the game. You are right about Ellis demoralizing them. Freeman was even quoted after the game as saying he was stubborn, code for Ellis schooled him in my opinion.

The thing that makes Krysko's teams different than other Griz teams is they are mentally tougher than Griz teams of the past. The other thing I thought worked in our favor was the Sac coach subbing his players like a freaking fire drill. It really frustrates his players based on the looks on their faces and the muffled F Bombs I heard when they walked past the scorer's table headed to the bench. Jenkins like he wants everyone in the gym to see him and know he is in charge. He has some athletes, sometimes you need to let the big dogs run. I am glad he did it the way he did.

Great win by the Griz, we now have a couple key road breakthroughs which are tough to get. NAU has had the schedule in their favor and I think they will come back to the pack when they hit the road. They have a nice club, but are not going to run away with it by any means.

thats great the griz got a good win on the road. the home games coming up will be huge, we just got one thing to do, not lose and we got this.

I've seen the Griz play in that gym before. 1,200 or so is a sell-out there. It reminded me of my class C days, that's how small it is. The great thing about it, no bad seats!
