Nope...first time i ever posted about this. when one of the refs in the first game has to come to you to tell you to turn it down a notch, why keep doing it and cost your team 15 yards and potential momentum change of the game to the other team. I am fine for swagger and cockiness, but when it starts going into taunting and costing the team, no I am not fine with it. We will see how the MVFC refs view this next week at UND

I had to re-look at my MO State source. The stats quoted were from the 2023 post-season. My own damn fault, should have paid more attention. Why MO State even mentioned his paultry Griz stats puzzles me. Thanks for the correction.

Passing plays which ended up in the ball not being thrown (i.e, the QB was sacked instead.
I almost posted a response but then thought it wasn't a serious question because surely the distinction would be quite obvious. Maybe not though. It's possible some people can't comprehend the difference between the play that is called and what actually happens on the field.
I asked a family friend who is a Big 12 ref (in training) about this.
He told me the distinction can, at times, be hard to discern. Since the NCAA subtracts rushing yards for sacks... the official stat keeper might use blocking schemes and other variables to determine if it is categorized as a passing play (sack) or a rushing play (TFL).
He said - most of the time it is not a difficult decision...

And, since the discussion I was responding to was "pass defense". Sacks clearly are part of pass defense and don't involve just throws. Yes, I see/understand the other things mentioned above. I could never quite figure out what the rule or call was in that regard. To me, qb sneaks, option runs, wildcat runs, etc. for a loss are runs. Most anything else would seem to be a sack if the qb doesn't get back to the line of scrimmage. I suppose a rollout play for loss could go either way.
On a similar note, how could Hayden Harris get 2.5 sacks, 3 TFL's, but only FIVE total tackles? That seems impossible...

I believe that the way they keep stats, he had 5 tackles of which 3 were TFL of which 2.5 were sacks. You don't add them together. So if a player gets a sack, they get credit for the sack and a TFL and a tackle.

Don't know, but... I believe TFL's include sacks behind the line of scrimmage. A sack at the line of scrimmage is not a TFL. So, it looks like 2.5 sacks and 3.0 the TFL's are the same play, and are tackles. One of the sacks must have been at the line of scrimmage, so sack, Harris had 3 solo's and 2 assists. An assist counts as a full tackle. A TFL can be a full tackle/TFL or .5.
Does this work? 2 full sacks, which were both full TFL's which were also 2 tackles. That's 2 tackles. Perhaps a .5 sack but not a TFL because was at line of scrimmage. Note assists are added to the number of tackles as a full tackle. So, now up to 3 tackles. Then, another .5 TFL (that's equivalent to a full tackle) and 1 regular tackle. So, up to 5.
How's that? 2.5 sacks/TFL's result in 2 solo tackles and an assisted tackle, but an assisted tackle is added to solo's as 1.0. And he got another .5 TFL, so .5 TFL, which is treated as a full tackle, and got another 1 full tackle.
His 3 TFL's and 2.5 sacks resulted in a loss of 20 for each. This seems to goof up my above view.
