Is Keron Desheilds really a better option than Mario Dunn?

I think Keron is too selfish to be a point guard

When no one else is scoring & just standing around out there he at least tries to make something happen.

I honestly don't get all the criticism of DeShields over here... He's our 2nd leading scorer, 2nd in assists, a damn good defender, busts his ass and shows a little emotion and fire which this team desperately needs right now.

too selfish? :roll: I was stuck with listening to KGVO on 101.5 FM....which once again ended the broadcast and switched to FOX news while the game was still underway......if anyone can hear the post-game interview with Tinks, could they please post a brief synopsis? Gotta love KGVO :evil:

He is a shoot first, pass second player. With how this team is built, they would be much better with a point guard the penetrates and passes.

But honestly, PG is the least of their worry. The lack of any type of production in the paint, the lack of any production from the 5 is going to drag the Griz down in a lot of games. They also need MW to start scoring. The Griz have basically gotten nothing out of their starting 4 and 5.

As much as I'd love to see Dunn in there. He just has not shown he is ready consistently. Keron has been solid this season. Only 1 game I thought he played terrible in, and that was only a bad half. Keron is a great defender, solid scorer, needs to become better distributing. I was very disappointed in Jamar's lack of desire tonight on defense in this game.

I don't get why this team just cannot find any post presence whatsoever. Martin and Hutch both worked hard physically in the off season. Come game time, just nothing is there for them. Kemp must be in a dog house or not ready to get more minutes. He is our best post option.

Kareem you sure did not look like the leader out there in this one.

We didn't shoot well. Jamar did not play his role which should be the leader and needs to hustle and attack more. I still think the biggest problem we have is in the post and I don't think we have an active player (that I've seen) than can fill the role. We are going to have to find some sort of solution for the post with the players we have now and it might have to be so called "small ball" which I think could work for the big sky but if somehow we make the NCAA tournament we will struggle against teams that have forwards that are as big (or bigger) and more athletic than our post player as well as a center which will likely be much bigger and stronger. It will be fun to watch and see how we find a way to compete in the big sky, unless we don't.

Sorry, but with the way this team is built we need the PG to be a scorer too. If we had a post player who could consistently catch the ball inside then yeah I'd probably agree with you. In fact if we had that I'm sure we'd see Keron do exactly what you say more often. Right now though our points have to come from the 1, 2, and 3 because we have such struggles at the 4 and 5.

Some people here really seem to have almost a grudge against Keron and like to point out every little turnover or drive that didn't end in a score while many other players get free passes. Gregory goes 1-9 shooting and not a peep... Weisner is 1-9 shooting over the past 2 games with 1 rebounds at the PF position and not a peep. DeShields get stuffed when trying to make something happen on offense while everyone else stands around & Tinkle nearly has a heart attack yelling "MOVE MOVE MOVE!!!" and people lose their shit wanting to replace him.

I like Dunn and think he's going to be a damn good player here, but the fact is Keron is by far our best option at PG right now both offensively and defensively. As mtgrizrule said, he's also been very solid this season with the exception of that one half in an earlier game.

Oh and yes the announcers were about as disrespectful as could be without just coming out saying we are silly state and a silly program. I hope some day we can get some revenge in either football or basketball.

Tinks has earned my respect over the past few years but it is hard to imagine this team sailing through a much improved Big Sky conference as it has the last two seasons.

Except that we crushed Hawaii two years ago by 19. So, really, we already got our revenge.

I agree grizwhiz. I think we are in for a fight in the conference and will feel very fortunate if we make it out of the big sky this year.

I never once said KD needs to be replaced. What I did say is he needs to be better about getting people involved, be a better at distributing the ball. I think guys watch because they just know KD is going to put up a shot. It is great when your PG can score, but he needs to be a guy that gets everyone else points also, and KD goes through spurts when that is not the case.

Just my 2 cents on Jamar's off game... Remember years ago when AJ had an absolutely shitty game against Northern Colorado? Yahosh 'the screamer' Bonner got into AJ's head early and he just wasn't himself. AJ went 2-10 and the Griz lost at home scoring only 48 points...

Jamar seemed pretty damn frustrated out there (much like AJ that game) with Spearman stuck on him like glue all game. Sure, Spearman probably wasn't on the same level as Bonner in terms of getting in a players head but his defense combined with the constant double teams seemed to really frustrate Jamar. When that happens the Griz need to have their other players step up in a big way. If Jamar is getting taken out of the game with constant double teams like that and we don't make the other team pay for it they'll keep doing it.

I am not sure we are even the 3rd best team in the conference anymore. Eastern is playing some really good ball so far this season. UND got smoked tonight but I think they are better than us too. I keep wanting to say we have just played a tough schedule but in reality I don't think it has been as hard as I make it out to be. I was surprised at how poor UW was, that is a bottom 2 or 3 team in the PAC12. SDSU is only 3-5. This was a solid Hawaii team but I don't think they are any better than the team we beat by 19 two years ago. You start adding this stuff up and I think we are in for a bit of a letdown this year.

Some of the other Big Sky teams do have some pretty nice wins, which isn't all that usual for the Big Sky. UND is going to be a tough one I'm sure even though they got blown out by Cal Poly today. Weber is 0-3 right now, but we know they'll be good. UNC could obviously be trouble, as they've looked very good and EWU is sporting a 3-2 record right now against D1 teams, so they look much improved.

I still think the Griz will be right up near or at the top though at the end of the year. Tinkle has done a good job in previous years of using these non-conference games to figure some things out and have the Griz playing well by conference. Last year we were 4-4 going into conference (2-4 in D1 games).

Lets look at last year.. Opened the season with a close loss to Colorado State where we had 17 rebounds (CSU had 40). Sound a bit like the Washington game there in terms of the rebounding? Had a win against San Diego and Idaho. Then a blowout loss @BYU (like Minn this year). Followed by a 10 point loss @San Francisco (like @Hawaii this year). Toss in a very close home loss to South Dakota State (like SF this year) and you basically have things going pretty similar to how they went last year to begin the season.

Last year:
@CSU - L 65-72 & outrebounded 40-17.
@Idaho - W 60-59 & outrebounded 30-29.
San Diego - W 67-66 & outrebounded 29-22.
@BYU - L 60-85 & outrebounded 35-25.
@SF - L 68-78 & outrebounded 40-32.
SDSU - L 67-68 & outrebounded 46-31.

I think we should beat Idaho both here and on the road to finish off this little stretch of non-conference against D1 teams & go into conference with a 5-4 (3-4 D1) record. If we drop both of those games then I'll be worried. Not saying I'm not a little worried right now, just not too worried yet as we've seen this before :)

Regarding Deshields the problem really has to do with the decisions he makes at times. Every player is going to make mistakes but a majority of the poor decisions he makes smack of self-centered play. When he forces shots that he lacks the ability to finish or turns the ball over when trying to dribble through 3 guys it usually looks like him "trying to get his" and it's not best for the team. When the other guys mentioned don't shoot/play well it's normally that they took shots out of the offense but they just wouldn't go down.

What drives me crazy is when Keron and Kareem hold & dribble the ball for a complete possession & then finish it by forcing a bad shot. This isn't the NBA and we definitely won't go far doing that on a regular basis. And it's not because the other guys are standing around that that happens. Open players are often overlooked & then do become stagnant just wondering what's going to happen. Jamar can get away with it more than Keron because he has the skill to finish at times but even when he does finish over the long run that type of play hurts the team.

They normally look the best & have the most success when swinging the ball quickly with dribble penetration when it's there to either get a good shot or kick it to an open teammate. The shooting percentage almost always goes up for a team that gets it's shots that way as compared to the 1 vs 5 strategy. With all the other problems we all know about (post play & rebounding) this fact is even more important with this team.

This team has struggled some. But no way is Washington a bottom two Pac12 team. Most preseason polls had them 4th or 5th, and they have enough talent to finish higher.

And HI is just a tough road trip, especially over Thanksgiving. No surprise that the Griz came out flat. I was just surprised at HOW flat. But it happens.

I think this team is going to be fine. Yes, the Conf will be a dog fight. Yes, our lack of an inside game will hurt. No. We probably don't win 17 Conf games. But I believe we will be right there at the end.
