Griz vs Griz (Scrimmage)

Okay, I am back from the dead.

I will say this team has Great depth, but then we all knew that. No other team will match this depth in the Big Sky.

First Half: Silver 36, Maroons 27
Andrew Strait was awesome last year and he even looked better today. He played for the Silver in the first 16 minute half and scored 14 of the first 28 points. Gus Chase scored 7 points in the first half for the Silver, showing his quick feet and ability to get to the basket. Strait and Chase inside will be a very tough matchup for any team to defend. Very tough for any team to out rebound those two players. Hasquet scored 11 points for the Maroons in his typical inside-outside game, making a 3 point play and three field goals.

Second Half: Maroons 34, Silver 31
Andrew Strait scores 12 points this half, except for the Maroons. Gus Chase scored 9 points for Silver. Dlouhy scores 9 points for Maroons.

5 minute overtime:
No one player really spot lighted the overtime. Scoring was spread out.

Overall:

This is the best scrimmage I have seen from the Griz in quite sometime. Most scrimmages in the past have left question marks a plenty, but not this one. As mentioned Strait and Chase will be near impossible to stop for most teams in the Big Sky. Add Hasquet, Dlouhy (scored 12 points overall and can shoot that freethrow), Ellis and Rundles at point guard and this team should win it for sure. I am almost sure Ellis will be the one starting at point guard and Rundles coming in as backup.

Spurgetis really impressed me today. Scored 10 points and moved around the court quite well. Should get some playing time this year.

Swift also looked good showed some moves around the basket I haven't seen much last year. He is improved, and should be one of the first players off the bench.

Vanderjagt for a big skinny player who needs to bulk up can move quite well for a player his size. Nothing like the 6'10 to 7'0 players Griz recruited in the past (most were to slow and not so coordinated). Vanderjagt scored 6 points. I figure he won't be playing alot early on but should be gaining more minutes as the season goes, depending on how he is developing into the system.

Chavez played some, hit a three and a field goal that I counted. Will be coming off the bench.

Sharp should be seeing quite a bit of playing time, scored around 12 points. He has bulked up, though not as much as Strait did last year. but then, Strait bulked up to fast last year and suffered chin splints because of it. Shouldn't be a problem with Sharp this year.

Martin looked good and will get a lot of playing time. May not start though.

I predict Staudacher, Graves, Cox, and Sims red shirt this season.

I could see a starting lineup like this:

PG Ellis
SG Martin or Dlouhy
PF Chase
F Hasquet
C Strait

Anyway, see you all at next weeks first exhibition game. Will be real nice to see them play against someone else.

Welcome back True. Thanks to you & Remax in the other thread for the reports. Is there a better time of year then November when we get both college football & basketball?

Ding Ding Ding, TrueGriz wins

Great post Truegriz. You and I agreed on what we saw for the most part. I did not keep stats though and posted my thoughts on the other thread with REMAX. Glad to see we agreed on alot.

I see this as the starting lineup as of now.

1 - Ellis
2 - Martin
3 - Douhly
4 - Hasquet
5 - Strait

When Ellis goes to the bench, Hasquet may see some three. Rundles has been very impressive and might be too good to redshirt, although not much time available. Swift will be a great defender and will play at minimum 20 minutes.
