Griz vs EWU 2015

Every year the Eagles vs Griz game is a barnburner and ewu has came out on top way too often.
My question is what happened last year? Montana mauled EWU and really shut down the high flying eagles offense. Was it injuries? Was it the defensive gameplan? This years game has most fans very nervous and many think this could be a potential loss. Any chance the Griz can repeat last years performance.
Will the Griz ever win on the inferno?? lol

Eastern wasn't very good last year and it began to show late in the season. Eastern didn't beat a good team last year and they started the year 6-2 because they played 6 really bad big sky teams last year before facing NAU/UM/PSU. When they faced the better teams, it showed. Eastern completely changed defensive schemes last year and started a ton of freshman, so it was a disaster in terms of defense for a large part of the year. This year, those younger kids have had a year in the system, and although Eastern is still giving up points, they are much better defensively.

On offense, last year we had Cooper Kupp, and to an extent Bourne and that was it. Hill went down for the season in game 1, West was a good QB but had ZERO mobility, and we were really limited and that was disguised by both our easy schedule and Cooper Kupp. This year on Offense, its a completely different story. Eastern has a mobile QB who opens up a lot more options than eastern has had in a long time. Kupp is playing well, but Hill gives Eastern speed in the slot (he has more TD's than Kupp this year), and Bourne is one of the best WR's in the big sky on the other side. We also start a true freshman running back who has a ton of speed, something Eastern hasn't had in years past. Add all this to the biggest piece, Easterns new offensive coordinator, and Eastern is a much, much different team than last year. Eastern's offense is as good as I've seen, and that includes the VA and Taiwan Jones years. The D gives up points, but makes great adjustments and the 2nd half numbers compared to the first half are much different.

The Griz will see a much different team in Cheney this year than they faced in Missoula last year.

Heres the deal.....

Offense- EWU has an amazing offense...Montana has a very good offense.

Defense-EWU has a very bad defense...Montana has a very very good defense.

Montana has the better overall complete team I think...as well as a offense that will be able to score with EWU....

I like our chances.

Eastern is always very good. But they've also gotten extremely fortunate in a few wins over the GRIZ in Cheney.

And no matter how you cut it, Delaney's teams -- not necessarily known as offensive juggernauts -- were able to put up boatloads of points on Eastern. I think this year may well be a point barrage.

Thanks for the response marceag. makes since what you posted. I still feel good about this matchup. Like get em said even during the Delaney years the games were winnable and Stitt has the team playing better on the road in my opinion.

Spin your defense however you want, but here's the thing: you rank in the 100s in FCS in both scoring defense and total defense, you're allowing an average of 24 first downs per game, and you have one of the worst 3rd down defenses in the conference. An offense like yours can mask those deficiencies most of the time, but I wouldn't count on it against a more complete team like the Griz.

Id like to take a moment to appreciate your input and demeanor in this thread. It's nice having a civil and level-headed discussion with both fan bases contributing.

As far as the game goes, I'm really curious about how your defense will play. I remember a couple years ago when you had that talented LB (I think his last name was Hamelin??) and another guy in the secondary who were able to mask a weak defense overall with strong individual play. If you guys have a few dudes like that, Griz might be in trouble.

Conversely, I want to see how our defense will stack up and try to slow down Gubrud, Bourne, and Kupp. It will be the best offense (EWU) vs defense (UM) matchup in the FCS this season.

EWU had a pitiful defense last year and their QB play was not up to standard. The Griz were improving and EWU regressing when they played and were able to capitalize on those EWU weaknesses.

It was certainly up to standard in the six games in a row they won before that. And I haven't seen anything to demonstrates that their defense is significantly improved this year.
Big sky defenses have a way of making QBs look really good.

One thing I don't like about playing EWU is how they can score from anywhere on the field. I also hate watching their QB drop back and know when he lets it go someone will catch it. I'm always yelling at tv how the hell did he catch that? where did he come from? How did they just convert 3 and 31? Much respect to eagles offense.

Appreciate the comments.

It will be interesting how Eastern matches up this year. Eastern brings more pressure this year than they have in probably 4-5 years. No way we are going to stop the Griz, but I believe we will try to pressure Brady into making some bad decisions. I do think Eastern is going to drop a lot into coverage and make the Griz run, so i'd expect Calhoun to have a great game. Eastern does have a really good LB in Zamora, who missed time early, but is definitely an all conference player. Eastern is much better in the secondary but thin up front on the line so I'd expect the Griz to try and run all day and I'm surprised more teams haven't...Eastern will give up points, there is no doubt so the Griz will have their fair share of big plays.

Eastern's offense is difficult to stop. Gubrud can escape pressure, which is one thing we couldn't do last year. UNC tried to absolutely eliminate Kupp last week by covering him with a DB and Safety the entire game, and a large part of the game they dropped 8 into coverage, which is why Eastern ran a ton last week. Eastern is going to score points, there is no doubt, we dropped 44 in Fargo and that includes a missed XP and missed FG. Teams that do well against Eastern grind out the clock, limit possessions, and score TD's. Eastern is going to score points so the Griz need to make the most of their possessions in order to win, FG's won't get it done and turnovers for either team would be a killer.

Game is already sold out, should be a good one.

Far too many Eastern fans and a lot of other fans don't realize where the Big Sky would be without Montana...You guys have kept this conference near the top for the past 2 decades and should have earned everyone's respect...

I think Tyrone Holmes' hit on the qb at the beginning of the game really set the tone.

I'll bite. You mean the hit on defenseless Reilly Hennessey after time was called. Holmes didn't get penalized. Another example of WA grizzly stadium home cooking.
You owe your championship to poor ref'ing in multiple games. Lets not go down that alley.

To answer the OP, if you have multiple starting QBs, you have no starting QBs. That was on display in that game. West was a complete disaster by the end.
