Griz vs CSU game thread

Ward just fouled out now. Whistle happy refs tonight. Replay sure looked like a good steal there by Ward, not a foul.

Coleman, Jamar and Henderson on the floor for the Griz all with 4 fouls. Griz aren't even in the bonus yet.

And we thought the refs in the big sky were bad...

Apparently this is where the replacement refs for the NFL ended up...in the MWC.

OFFSIDES ON THE GRIZ, #24. By rule it's a ground rule double. Match point.

Weisner, Coleman, Jamar and Ward all foul out.

That last one on Weisner was....about as much BS as the last foul on Ward.

I hate this. this sux so bad. feel so cheated

As Holein said, it's all part of the non-conference schedule. Of course he didn't say "Getting homered" but that's what he's getting at :P Big hill to climb when you have to play against another good team plus refs.

Griz lose 72-65 :(

I was only able to listen, but this sounds like a serious homer job! Nonetheless, what does Wayne do about the lack of post rebounding? I think we have a real problem in this area. Hutch did nothing and really has shown little potential. I don't think Andy is ready and it is a shame he can't have a redshirt year. Mathias will score but is not a rebounder. Is small ball the answer with Mathias at the 5?

PotomacGriz...thnx for the link..tough game but at least many of us got to watch it Griz looked good, they will be fine by late dec. stripes or no stripes

Definitely agree, the Griz young players looked pretty damn good out there today. It's too bad it didn't end up in a win :( I can't even imagine how frustrating that was on the court with those bullshit fouls. Still...happens all the time in college basketball on the road, so nothing out of the ordinary unfortunately. Every time the Griz got some momentum it seemed it was squashed by the Refs.

Being outrebounded 41-20 sucks...and I'm sure that'll be a pretty big focus of the next practices. 33-20 fouls, with 4 of our players fouling out hurts too obviously. I thought the refs said Weisner had fouled out...but he only shows as having 4 fouls?

Over all though if you told me Jamar would foul out so quickly and play so little, I would've expected the Griz would have been blown out. Very impressed with how the young guys did with so many starters and experienced players in foul trouble.

Deshields had 17 points, Gregory had 10, Coleman & Jamar had 9 each, Henderson & Weisner had 7, Ward had 5 and Hutch had 1.

Well, that sucked. There were quite a few questionable calls down the wire, which is a shame. Still, you have to feel encouraged by how our young guys played. They went toe to toe with a much bigger, more experienced team. Should have come away with the win, but I hope they learn from the loss. Really got to get some more boards, though. The disparity there was terrible.

I've seen quite a few poorly refereed games called at the high school level... flat out one-sided affairs. This game -- perhaps the most one-sided game I've seen on the college level -- was pretty well called because the refs knew how to rachet up calls to take possession away from the Griz on offense and then to call the kids on defense for positioning. But when Keron DeShields got his left shoulder yanked back on a sure drive & layup (no call, out of bounds to csu), I figured the game was in the bag.

On the positive side, a lot of young (talented) Griz players got valuable experience. I was most impressed overall with Keron DeShields... also with Jordan Gregory. Got a couple of young blue-chippers in the back court. Spencer Coleman will be a force when he's healthy, and will provide some of the rebounding the Griz missed tonight. Got some work to do in the low blocks, but I still saw some positive signs. Overall this was a good experience for the Griz.

The officials were bad, but that is pointless to worry about. Part of the foul difference was that we are so terrible down low. Kareem was off tonight but he will be the player we were used to and lots of other guys have improved. Coleman was a great pickup and Ward won't be as easily exposed as a defensive liability in conference. Ward becomes a positive in the Big Sky. He can be scored on, but nobody can stop him from scoring.

This may be the worst D1 team down low I have ever seen in my life. Other than that this team has very big potential. I am sure the Freshmen aren't ready yet, but at least they could be some day. Hutch never will be. We should immediately go to the young guys now in hopes they can contribute by the end of the year or just go small and play up tempo.

I would bet Hutch is a great guy, but he was a terrible recruiting miss. Bring him off the bench for fouls and occasional energy. Other than that, go with guys that at least belong at this level.

Hey all, I will try mustering some energy for a post game summary later. I am too pissed, and proud. Never thought that was possible, but it is.

Proud of the way the GRIZ played, and very impressed with attitude, defense, and youth.

Pissed to no end at those officials. Folks, it was worse in person than what you seen or heard. Worse college officiating I have seen, and that includes Big Sky officiating. It may have been the worse officiated game I have seen period!!!! They were lucky to get 10 calls right all game.

I would have been T'd up and tossed if I were coaching that game. Tinkle had a "RED" face from the shitty officiating, and even tried to get a T, and did not. I have never seen Tinkle so pissed. Those officials are a disgrace to college basketball officiating.

The fact the GRIZ were even in this game with the bad officiating, is something to be proud of. Great to see the Gregorys, and met Andy Martin's parents, very impressed with his parents attitude. Will never have to worry about his parents complaining about anything with the program, or coaching. Also briefly met John, great guy, and I look forward to reading his articles more.

Will try a summary over the weekend. GO GRIZ!!!!!

It was good to meet you mtgriz!!

Will have more to say on here, but here is my article on my site - http://bit.ly/TAfGoW" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The reffing was not good, this is true. Lots of ticky tack judgment calls that went against the Griz. 20 fouls in the second half, and some of them were bad. No doubt Tinkle was furious. I will say Eustachy wasn't all that happy either, especially with some fouls called on Eikmeier that were equally ticky tack. He told me after the game that was one thing he always hated about basketball.... that guys could be out of the game based on judgment calls by the refs. There were more bad calls against Montana but they didn't have a monopoly on them.

That said, I thought the fact that CSU was simply better on the interior was a bigger factor in the outcome. The rebounding numbers were staggering... 44-21 rebounding edge, 19-2 edge on the offensive glass for the Rams. There was simply no answer for Colton Iverson, he was bigger and stronger than anyone Montana could put out there.

Lots to build on for the Griz. Jamar/Ward were non-factors for the most part (partly due to foul trouble), and the Griz were still up 7 at the break and in it to the end. DeShields and Gregory, I thought, were really fantastic. On both ends. No turnovers, played huge minutes, and held Eikmeier and Green to below average games. Really can't say enough about them and their performance, it was all Griz fans could have hoped for, in my opinion.

Much more thoughts in the coming days.
