Griz vs. Coastal Carolina

Mr. Greenjeans said:
The National Weather Service is calling for a high of 11 degrees, that would be at game's end, probably around 5 to start...

5-15 degrees with any wind at all will feel pretty Antarctic for the southern boys...could see a few footballs on the field too, fumbling seems to come with those cold games.

It won't hurt that's for sure.

What position does Mother Nature play for the Griz again? It will be a factor but a small one. I think this will be a close game, but I hope I'm wrong.

I thought CC looked good today. As,you'd expect from a 10-2 playoff team.

I don't think they will beat UM in Missoula though.

I used to buy into the theory that Southern teams would not fare well in the cold. Haven't seen much evidence the temperature really matters. Perhaps in extreme temperatures, but the bigger factor to me is the crowd. It's predictable: Their coach will say to a reporter that they have heard this is a loud venue, but they are going to practice with loud music blaring and doesn't expect his team to be affected. Then in the post-game interview there will be some comment about how loud the crowd was and it affected their ability to play their game. Did you see the stadium at Coastal Carolina in today's game? If attendance topped 5,000 I'd be surprised.

I doubt the beach chickens will be prepared for the crowd noise. That's what will affect them the most. Griz fans need to show up & make it loud.

I don't think the weather will make much difference. I also agree that playing against a MEAC team does not show much.

My prediction: Griz by 21.

I think it's going to be 73 and sunny here in Myrtle Beach this Saturday. Can we switch the game to here? I think it's going to be 12 there in Misoula.

Sorry. That's "Missoula" with 2 "s"

Biggest factors in this game:
1) Turnovers
2) How hard the Griz D will hit the CC O. BC did not hit the CC O hard all game.
3) Special teams

I am not feeling that confident about this match-up. Weather and travel might play a minor role but I am not sold on those factors trumping the game-plan execution and there has been way too many poorly executed quarters and halves of football played by the Griz this season to make me confidently say that we will win this game with ease like some of the other posters.
I agree, we have been consistently, inconsistent.

To me the crux of this game will be on the D.
If the Griz D has been as outstanding as they have the last several games then I like our chances and I can see a blow out happening.
If th Griz D does not show up then we will lose.

I live on a island in SC now before moving here from Missoula in 2006 where I lived for close to 20 years ( and was a season ticket holder each and every year) so I feel uniquely qualified to comment on this subject. You can't get more coastal Carolina than where I'm currently located.

First, it gets chilly here. Maybe down in the upper 30's this time of year. During the day- mid 60's. This upcoming week it's supposed to be mid 60's to lower 70's. Probably 10 degrees lower in Conway (CCU location). Today's paper shows a normal high/low 66/44.

Having said all that, Missoula is going to be way colder than what Coastal is used to. I seriously doubt that even the "northern" players on their roster have ever experienced freezing fog.

Having said THAT, the environment that will affect CCU the most will be WGS. They haven't experienced anything like that place in a game that counted. Yes, they played U of SC this year but, come on, that's like us playing Panhandle State. Do they really think the crowd was up for that game? I think not. They are kidding themselves if they thing it will be anything close.

Now, weather and crowd aside, I simply think we have a better team. I haven't looked at the stats but their D-line looked small. I think they will have a hard time moving our guys and we'll wear them down with a healthy Canada and Van, no way that they will stay with us. Our D seemed a lot more physical than what I saw yesterday from BC. Come about the middle of the 3rd quarter, I think that they will be ready to get on the plane for a long ride home.

Prediction 48-14 Griz!

Great post; mirrors my thoughts exactly. :thumb:

The weather coupled with the stadium is going to be a factor in the game. Athletic teams lose a step or two when they can't hear the snap count (you are watching the ball like the defense) and they can't feel their fingers or toes. I can only think of two teams that have won games in Missoula during the playoffs that come from warm weather climates Cal Poly in 05 and Wofford in 07.

Enough about the weather... the travel will kill CC

Travel nor weather won't kill CCU. Brock F'ing Coyle will.

This!

Looking forward to Coyle, and our entire defense, laying some love on these guys. For a much vaunted defense Bethune-Cookman's didn't look like much today.

If anyone in their right mind thought BCU actually had the #2 defense in the FCS, they need to get their head examined. Same thing with SC State, eventhough I give them a little more credibility.

I posted this on our board earlier this week:

We played the #1, #6 and #9 defenses in the nation in total defense, and, on average (if my math is right) those three teams allowed 153 yards more against us than they averaged for the regular season.

On scoring defense, we played the #2, #7, and #31 defenses and on average they allowed 23 points more to us than they averaged for the regular season.

On rushing defense, we played the #1, #18, and #21 and on average they allowed 148 yards more to us than they averaged for the regular season.

I just don't believe B-CU's defense is that good. Looking at their Sagarin SOS, they are 224th and one of their losses was to a 3-9 Norfolk State team that lost to Hampton by 10.

Maybe Coastal Carolina's coaches are going to be teaching a crash course on how to run the triple option offense.

Interesting stats bodoyle. Did not have the opportunity to watch the game yesterday. I am interested to know your opinion about team speed? Especially at the skill positions and also the size of your oline? I don't care how cold it is outside or how loud the crowd noise is - does not effect speed.

Coastal Carolina had a better SRS rating than Montana before the playoffs started (7 vs. 8).

Trying to gauge teams by looking at schedules for CC, some SoCon teams, other Big South teams, etc., it really looks like “any given Saturday.”

CC beats Liberty in OT,
Liberty beats Char So by 42,
CC loses to Char So,
Appy loses to Char So,
Appy thumps GaSo,
GaSo loses to 2 playoff teams,
GaSo beats Florida.

Samford loses at Arkansas by 10,
Samford beats GaSo by 10,
Samford beats App St by 24,
Samford loses to Jacksonville St by 41,
JSU loses to BCU by 16,
CC beats BCU by 24.

E Ky loses to CC by 19,
E Ky loses to JSU by 58,
JSU loses to Tenn St by 16,
Tenn St loses to BCU by 3,
CC beats BCU by 24.

OK. Is that getting clearer?

Looks like everything will be frozen for a week or more, but hey! It'll "warm up" by game time. When does CC get into Missoula, Friday?

We just need to get ourselves a 400# running back, never again do we fail at 4th and 1.

I agree we need to figure out how to sign this guy.

Let's not forget the playoff game against U of Mass. back in 06. A lot of egriz posters were making it sound as though Umass might as well stay home as they would not be able to handle a Montana winter day let alone a Night game. Well, "Surprise"!!! Weather is not a factor especially in a playoff game where adrenalin rushes and a well laid out game plan trumps mother nature.

UMass and Coastal Carolina are two different beasts buddy.
The UMass game was cold, probably because it was a night game, but it reminded me of the '95 playoffs. I spent 3 winters in NE humid cold, but that was nothing compared to Hi-Line cold. Here's hoping for an arctic blast with a stiff wind, and we'll see how a game at Stony Brook compares. I like our chances.

The UMass game was just f'ing cold no matter how you slice it. CC will undoubtedly struggle with the cold. So will we. It's not like the Griz have been playing in the snow all fall. We had one cold game.

What was the temp for the UMass game?

South Conference Teams DIE in Washington Grizzly. End of story.

App games were close others not remotely.

Wofford? Most gut wrenching loss I have ever attended. That Griz team could have won it all.......
