GRIZ/Vandals

They only out scored them 28-21 in the 2nd half. Idaho shot 29 free throws. We only got one more rebound then they did and had four more fouls. I did not see the game but it looks like there is still a lot of work to do to remain focused and play with intensity.

Yeah but our second string played a pretty large portion of that second half. You shouldn't make anything of that, the game was most definitely a blow out.

I should add: Will Cherry 9-12 from the field, 2-3 on threes, 4-5 on free throws, 3 steals, 4 rebounds and only one turnover.........a heckuva game!

Sorry this is so late, but am trying to get this in while visiting family too.

The GRIZ gave me my wish, in playing one of the best games, well halves, I have ever seen. This team is much more mature than experience dictated. They have learned a lot in a little time. They served notice of what they are capable when they play a complete game. Statisically the 2nd half was not too impressive, but Tinkle rightfully so called off the dogs with 12 minutes left. They could have easily put up 90 if Tinkle chose to do so. Instead he gave some experience to a very young team. Here are my observations.

Cherry- His shooting struggles are about to become a thing of the past. He has worked hard on his shot, and will have to be respected from the perimeter this year. He also is much smoother with his FT shooting. He needs a slightly wider base from the perimeter and FT line. He still has some upperbody movement from the line, but his elbow is straight and I seen a much more consistent release than last year. This guy is everywhere because he is the quickest and most athletic PG the GRIZ have ever had. He was only credited with 3 steals, but he was responsible for close to 10 forced turnovers with tipped balls, travels, and bad passes. Offensively he runs team with confidence too, and is capable of taking over a game on both sides of the court. This is his team, no doubt about it. Mark my words, if he stays healthy, he is all conference this year.

Jordan Wood- What is there to not like about this guy? I assure you his shot is too good for him to have prolonged shooting struggles. Off the ball he is very aware and sticks to guys like glue, and pretty solid on the ball too. He is also very vocal, he and Cherry each were giving direction. He is a solid ballhandler, smart player, and good passer too. He can take the ball to the hole if needed too.

Kareem Jamar- Like Cherry, this guy is everywhere, and does a little of everything well. His perimeter shot is better than I expected. I can see him in time developing a nice 3 point shot. He is a great rebounder for a SF. He gets good position and has a knack for knowing where the ball will go. Basically, his basketball IQ is off the charts, and he is not your typical FR, and there is not a huge learning curve for him. He is well ahead of where I expected him to be at this point. He will be an impact player as a FR. Be happy, very happy we have this guy for 4 years. Speaking of happy, this kid loves basketball and was consistently the 1st guy to encourage teammates. His smile is contagious, and I loved his banter with Tinkle. He was one rebound from 10 boards. Tinkle pulled him to get experience for other players. He told Tinkle he wanted to be in there to get double digits in rebounds. He did it jokingly, but I could tell he wanted that milestone. Tinkle joked back with him, "Hey you did your job, it is time to get others some time. Next thing you know he is laughing and enjoying everything his teammates are doing on the court. He and Cherry will be a headache for opponents for the next 3 years. This kid is better than the hype in my opinion.

Selvig- He is healthy and moves much better this year than last. He is always calm. He is become a better defender every game. He also gets his hands on many balls defensively. I also loved seeing him bring the ball up the court a few times. He is trying to hard on the offensive end trying find his game. He should not have fouled out of the game, only 3 of the calls on him were legit. He will find his offense, even without it he does everything that does not show up on the stat sheet. He can be a double double guy, maybe even put up a triple double now and again. He is also move vocal than I expected. He is maturing into a leader nicely.

Qvale- WOW, he wanted this game from the get go tonight. He certainly led by example. He works hard in the post and now expects to get the ball in the paint. All his teammates are expected to get him the ball too. He has improved his awareness by leaps and bounds this year from last year. He is pretty damn coordinated now too. He has nice touch from the line. He should be 15 point and 8 plus rebound guy this year. I think he could average 10 boards if he has to, but Selvig, Ward, Jamar, Steward, Hutch, and Reader are all solid board guys too. If Qvale plays like this every game, he will be hands down the best big in the BSC this year. I am beginning to think he has an outside chance at the NBA too.

Ward- He is a good rebounder and scorer. He has some room to go on defense, but was consistently in position tonight. He has a nice midrange game and nice pump fakes, Strait with better range and better FT consistency comes to mind. He should be solid off the bench all year.

Stockton- I wish he looked to shoot more. I watched him shoot during warmups, and he drilled a very high percentage of perimter shots. He takes great care of the ball, and like Wood plays very good off the ball defense, and he has worked on his on the ball defense, his footwork and quickness has improved. I think he is a better player than we give him credit for. We will just not see it very often because of our talent and his team 1st attitude. I am not worried at all when he is on the floor.

Steward- He is the perfect compliment to Jamar at SF. There is very little dropoff at SF when he comes in. This guy is athletic, great defender, good rebounder, hustles, smart, and great attitude. He and Wood are pretty intense and tenacious. He does a little of everything too, and actually mixes it up pretty well. His spin move for a lay in was absolutely poetic and amazing.

Reader- I was very impressed with this guy. He looks as long as Qvale and Selvig. He moves very well for a tall guy, very agile, and runs the floor well. If some musle and experience this guy has a very bright future. After Selvig moves on this guy will be ready to be a dominant BSC big. I really like Reader.

Hutchison- Like Reader, he got his hands on a lot of balls, and great attitude. He is not as smooth or fluid as Reader. I see him more of a true paint player with good rebounding and inside scoring potential.

Autry- I did not see much of him. In his little time on the court, I seen another athletic defender and solid ballhandler. He was nervous, but had a good idea of where to be on both ends of the court. He impressed me defensively, but has some way to go to spell Cherry at PG. Offensively, he can play both 1 and 2, but for this team his better role may be at PG. He has good ball skills, just not quite ready to be confident in what he has. I have a feeling his play might be a rollercoaster, but the talent and potential is there.

Chase Adams- He is a solid ballhandler and defender. He also plays with some attitude. I really was not as impressed with his shot as I was lead to be. I watched him warm up too, his shot looked a little inconsistent, then again it might have been an off night for him. He is a pretty damn good player to be mentioned this late of this summary. I guess I have to see more of him to make a good evaluation.

Overall this is a very deep team that can only get better. It is much more athletic than any prior Tinkle or Krysko coached team. This team will be fun to watch grow, but hold off getting too high on them. They are very young. They are capable of playing with anyone, yet also capable of a few struggles, and even stinkers. This team tonight though was outright impressive. I definitely see defense being a staple and very good most games. Offensively, it was great tonight, but cannot expect that every game yet.

Thank you GRIZ for treating me to such a great performance.

In all the years, have we ever beaten Idaho this handily?
I can't remember the last time the Grizzlies put on a whoopin' this big against any D-I opponent.

But then again, Idaho has struggled on the hardwood in recent years. So I'm not the least bit surprised by this beating. I wonder how the Vandals are going to fare in the rematch in Moscow next month.

They've been around .500 the past couple of years (including getting an invite to the CIT), so they haven't been too bad. Definitely a great win for the Griz!

The Griz beat Colorado State a few years ago 75-39. That was a pretty dominant performance by the Griz too. They didn't have a huge lead at halftime though like they did in this one.

mtgrizrule: Your game analysis was spot-on in every regard. Just a couple of add-ons: Cherry & Selvig may well be the top open-court disruptive defense duo I've seen in some time at Montana. Steward's spin fb drive was remarkable. I've watched Chase quite a bit & and believe he has the broadest range from long range (t.o.k., baseline, elbow)... he'll get better when he learns the Griz system.

Awesome game and summary, wish they had another game tonight.
Favorite play of the game was when Cherry brought the ball up full speed on the right side, cut to the middle , drove the lane and dished off to a wide open Wood in the corner for three. I was sitting close to the floor and watched Cherry's eyes as he scanned the court at center court at speed, gave an almost imperceptible nod to Wood as he was moving into position for the shot and then just rifled the pass through traffic. Will was just beaming and cracking up when Wood hit the shot.
More fans need to see these guys.

Let me add, I did not see a defensive weakness in scheme or personnel. Idaho had only a few open looks. Most all their shots were contested. I did not expect the defense, offense, and team unity be as good as it was this early. Safe to say, Tinkle, finally has all his kind of players in place.

Even the Freshman were in place on both ends of the court. A few of them were a little disorganized and nervous, but for the most part were where they had to be. Overall, a very organized and disciplined team.

As for Idaho, they had one of those games, when nothing goes for you and everything goes for your opponent. They are not as bad a team as the score and their play indicated this game.

Great game Griz, very fun to watch our team play like that! Keep it up!!!! Sucks to have this big of a break though. Hate to loose that kind of flow!

Tinkle had a heart-to-heart with Cherry after the Nevada game. Cherry also got good advice from his mom.

Cherry has responded GREAT since, in the Utah and now Idaho (career night) games. Way to go, Will.

From Missoulian:

"Previous games, I was kind of playing almost timid I think, like the weight of the world was on my shoulders and after that Nevada game, I had a talk with my mom," said Cherry, referring to Montana's 81-66 loss to Nevada 10 days ago. "She said that it looked like I was playing as if it was a job, like I'm not enjoying basketball anymore.

"After the talk, I just really tried to fire myself up and remember to go out there and have fun."

"He made a change after that Nevada game," Montana coach Wayne Tinkle said. "We had a nice little chat down in Salt Lake about what I was expecting out of him and what we needed better from him. He exhibited it in that game and really grew up."
