GRIZ/VA TECH

VA tech off to a quick start 10-2 5 minutes in. Perimeter shots not falling. Swift starting in place of Martin. Va Tech getting too many good looks early.

Come on GRIZ, lets get er done

11:42 left in 1st half, 12-9 Va tech. Swift playing very hard and contesting perimiter shots. It is making a difference. Also Swift is looking to penetrate. 1 short shot good and 1 dish on penetrating. Chavez in early. Come on mike, show em you deserve the minutes.

After watching the first half, I feel that the Griz are not that bad of a team and will do fine as the season progresses. They are getting beat by superior athletism and quickness which is the ACC and Big East or major versus mid major on the east coast. It is what it is. The experience will be good for them and hopefully learn from it. When they get back home and play out west they should be a lot more competitive.

I agree, for the second night in a row, they look a step slow but it is an ACC team. I think we are seeing a team that will miss Kevin Criswell a lot more than anyone thought.

Half time game summary- Offense is struggling to hit shots, including Strait. The effort is there, passing and penatrating is much better. Shots just not falling. Chase trying to make things happen, but lack of height is hurting him in this one.

Defense and effort is much better.

Swift, Dloughy, and Hasquet holding their own.
Rundles is pressing, just needs to let the game come to him, but he is working hard.
Chavez getting minutes and all over the ball. He got a cheap foul early. His Defense is not bad, yet not great.

Dloughy, Hasquet, Ellis, and Swift have all tried penetrating. At least the team is aware of what needs to be done on both ends of the court. A few too many turnovers, if shots start falling I think we will be fine. Hard for me to imagine this shooting slump lasting the whole year.

The coaches have made very good adjustments and players are aware of what needs to be done. Lets hope things fall into place sooner than later.

As I say that va tech hits a 25 footer.

Hasquet took a charge, but refs called a block. Nice try Jordan.
We are getting beaten badly inside this game. If Vanderjagt does not redshirt, lets get him in there to see what he can do. We need his height at the very least.

Anyone else want to see what this kid can do?

Comeon Griz make a run.

67-45, 5 minutes to go in the game. 2nd night in a row the griz are not competitive. 3rd game in this tourny will be more of the same...

70-44, offense is struggling and many TO's. Martin is making things happen. Hard to get a read on this years team. Bright spot Martin is 3/4 from downtown. Strait has been shut down. Offensive consistency is what we need to improve on though. As I was posting this we scored 9 pts on 3 3's.

Ouch, i watched the game last nite and saw a few good things, but mostly it looked like an inexperienced team out there on the court, I know there have been alot of changes, players, coaches, etc. but i hope the guys settle down and play their game. Not to mention the last two games played will be some of the toughest of the year. I think this tourny will be a great experience for them and i hope they apply their new knowledge to the big sky games. I have faith we can compete in our league! I just hope that they are prepared for the next big test in what looks like a pretty good O. Roberts team.

The game is over and we are lacking 3 things. (1) Leadership- someone has to step up. (2) Perimeter shooting (3) offensive consistency-need to find it.

It looks like until we get better guard play we will struggle.
I cannot fault the coaches. It looked like adjustments were made and effort was much better for the most part.

Positives- Hasquet (12 pts, 12 boards, good defense...get off him). Dloughy is consistently playing defense and scoring in double figures. Chavez-rather he is on or off, he sparks the team. Martin, looked good in the 2nd half, scoring and passing. Swift- huge difference in perimeter defense, but inconsistent offensively. I like this kid, and think we should see him through his youth and inexperience.

I think we will be fine come Big Sky play, but we are outmatched athletically right now against major conference teams. If we want to compete with the big boys we need to develop Rundles, Swift. Dloughy, Hasquet, and Martin (when on) can hold their own. Granted, Martin's height hurts him. Ellis is as quick as many guards and a good passer, but he does need to look to score when teams challenge him to do so.

Right now, I think the development of Swift and Rundles are key to our success. They have to be the young guards to pick it up consistently.

Chase needs to learn the offensive sets to contribute.

We lost, but I am not as discouaged as after WV game. Especially after seeing them destroy w michigan. We will be fine when the offense finds consistency.

Anybody getting the feeling this team might struggle to make .500 this season?

Nothing like the pre season. I was encouraged to see some guys show a little heart out there. The shots will start falling. The Griz will be competetive in the BSC, no doubt. Fact is, that is the only ticket to the dance in the BSC anyway. They are going to get a lot better playing these types of teams than beating NAIA schools. Nice to see Hasquet with a double double in points and rebounds. Martin showed some signs of life 4-7 from 3 point land. Strait needs more touches still, but he needs to knock down free throws. Griz go 3-8 which is pathetic. Griz still have 7 more games before conference play begins. They need to get to work.

At some point, we are going to need to have a consistent 3 point threat from the pg or off guard position. Without that, teams are going to collapse on the GRIZ inside and make things miserable for Andrew and our other inside guys. Neither Ellis, Swift of Rundles are great 3 point shooters. Thus far, Staudacher has not shown a consistent 3 point shot (like he did to an amazing degree in high school). Martin can do it but needs consistency. We had this in spades last year with Criswell and Matthews. It makes a helluva difference and I hope it comes soon.

I think we have capable 3 point shooters in Dlouhy, Hasquet, Martin, Chavez, and Stads. I see EWU shot about 28% from 3 point land themselves and nearly knocked of the Huskies. Griz need to cut down on Turnovers and do a much better job getting the entry pass down low. The only real effective guard so far doing that has been Ellis, and he isn't 100%.

I hope a leader emerges in the next few games.

I am hoping Martin's 2nd half is the confidence builder he needed. He or Staudacher from the perimeter are so key to our offense finding consistency. Offensively would also like to see Jordan get more looks. His defensive rebounding was very good tonight.
