True. But there were PLENTY of opportunities for the Griz players to step up and finish, and for whatever reason, they did not.

This train is off the track. What an absolutely terrible start to the conference season. At least Hutchison played better tonight. Gregory was terrific. Kareem good 1st half. Dunn and Deshields were solid. A few too many missed FT's, FG's, and no idea why we slowed it down the last 5 minutes? Hate so say it, but that was the biggest mistake of the game. The team lost it's beat and momentum from that. This is one of the few games where Wayne's strategy backfired. I'll take him to coach my team anytime though

We need to sweep at home this next week. Those will be tough teams coming in.

Griz should have won in regulation, and could have run a few more times. Didn't get her finished.

Tinks says we weren't putting up our hands on defense, and some of the vets made mistakes or didn't make plays in the end.

I'm in full agreement w/UMgriz75. I've rarely seen a team win with a stall game. In this game the Griz went to their "clock management" game with a 9-point lead. Ugh.

Up 9 points with 2:54 to go in the game then we go into stall ball.

Tough loss... Tinkle not happy with the missed opportunities. Sounds very frustrated.

As he said "We should have put the damn ball game away".

I agree with him there, but stall ball isn't the way to put the ball game away.

Should never have gotten to OT. Hands down on shooters. Didn't talk on D.

But we showed a lot of grit. But how many opportunities did we have to put it away and we didn't. We didn't make plays. We need to be honest. Should have put it away in violation. Missed shots, TO's, missed FTs, leaving shooters open.

Our focus wasn't there, and much of that was from our veterans. We showed heart, particularly in the 2nd OT.

We'll watch film, but what we'll see is that our key guys didn't make plays. We shot ourselves in the foot.

We've gotta keep building and get leadership from our seniors. We're fighting the same battles. We need our leaders to step up. Need to take it one day at a time from here.

The vets were forced to make shots with 2-3 seconds left on the shot clock. Repeatedly. This was a classic example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

And laid the proverbial egg---though it went 3 OT's...never should have gone beyond regulation. Inability to effectively execute the half-court offense, standing around, zero leadership---BIG problems right now---ARRGH!

There are no Tough Big Sky teams this year

So far each of our conference games have been tough. The only one that should have been tough was EWU. It is tough when we lose the games we have. Good news is we are in position to win every game. Bad news is, we are not doing what is needed to win the games. This team is so damn close. Just a little more consistent defense, and few more shots falling is all it takes. It would be a different story if the GRIZ were being blown out.

Every player needs to set his mind to playing with the same mindset and determination that Gregory and Dunn play with. That alone would be a huge help. :thumb:

True. But there were PLENTY of opportunities for the Griz players to step up and finish, and for whatever reason, they did not.

The air did seem to go out of the tires; but the last three minutes of regulation, and ten full minutes of OT, the "run the clock" strategy invariably meant that instead of patiently setting up a "play," UM was left with desperation shots just as the shot clock ran out.

AND at the end of both OTs, THAT HAPPENED WHEN WE KNEW THAT PSU was going to get the ball and have 15 seconds anyway. In essence, we ran the clock against ourselves.

That strategy had five consequences: instead of the ball being directed to obtaining points, it was 1) spending useless time being passed around, 2) open to a mistake, 3) open to a steal, 4) forcing a bad shot as the clock ran out, 5) giving the ball to PSU which then actually could run out the clock. Where was the "good" part of that strategy? Maybe it works if you have a ten point lead, but two points? A missed, forced basket? And the final 15 seconds are PSU's ball?

What in the h*** was the point?

Missoulian: The Griz led 56-47 on a pair of free throws from Kareem Jamar with 2:54 to play.

That was a team that came from behind 12-4 at the beginning. They had the game won.

Game high scorer, Gregory, with 25 points. 19 for Jamar and 17 for Deshields.

PSU had four players in double digits: 21, 21, 18, and 10.

After Gegory, Jamar, and DeShields, leading scorers: Hutch with 7 and Dunn with 6.

Weisner, Kemp, and Andy Martin really fell flat in this game on scoring.

Gregory carries this team. Hutch shows small but steady improvements. Dunn, with 9 rebounds and six points is earning his way in.

Jamar, his usual solid performance with 19 pts and 6 rebounds, but he doesn't get fired up.

I believe that both Gregory and Jamar played the entirety of the game. That's a long game.

What to do about Andy? He had a couple of strong bat-downs last night under the basket. A couple of close tries for the basket. On man-to-man defense, a lot of "deer in the headlights" reaction. It's easy to bluff him out from under the basket, and his peripheral vision seems poor, he has to turn his head and look at the guy he's guarding to see where he's at. Well, that's "taking your eye off the ball," literally. Just not a good "sense" yet.

Can anyone describe what offense the Griz ran from about the 6 minute mark? I have all the respect in the world for Tinks and hope we keep the guy until he's 80. But I was just confounded by that.

Read what Tinks said in the paper this week. Team does not know it's own identity. Are they a three-guard lineup? Four guard? Do they even have a post? If they don't know who they are, how can they help being confused?

And that wasn't the case at all against Sac State. They played as a team. Very well. And they ground down PSU to take a good lead with two minutes left. Things just fell apart for them: cold shooting, and the inexplicable "run down the clock" offense.
