Very disappointed.
Didn't put up a fight defensively. Huskinson really hurt us. We settled for way too many jump shots. We stopped attacking. We got frustrated and settled.
Did a nice job making FTs. Short turn around to UND. Gotta find a way to rally the troops and get the split. We have to respond. We blew an opportunity here today, so we gotta get back on the horse and get it done vs. ND.

It was a good game. Game announcers did a good job. Griz had lots of good plays; the bigs played well. Given Andy's performance for the short time he was in, is this the first game that perhaps he should have been played more? Hutch was an important player for the first time, against a formidable opponent. Some dry holes on the ordinarily good three pointers were the loss; Weisner carried the second half in that regard. Can't complain about the strategy to give Jordan Gregory the last three point try. Oh well. That was a good call, it just didn't happen.

NCo has 4 really good players, we have 3 maybe. They have more talent. That these guys stayed in the game was all about the team and a credit to Wayne. Kareem proved he's the best player in the league, but that won't be enough in a month, we are so weak inside , a fatal flaw.

Their key player was Tevin Svihovec. Gregory was assigned that coverage. I wouldn't second-guess the assignment. Gregory is very good. It's like the odds in the battle game "Risk," ... if the odds are equal, the aggressor wins. Gregory was equal to the task. Svihovec won the odds.Mr. Greenjeans said:

We scrambled and literally found a place a half hour before tipoff (after striking out at 6-7 other bars). They placed it on the main TV and had sound as well. Needless to say, the second half started out like a 180 from the first. It was so disappointing to see our "D" continually allow easy interior penetration and one layup/short hoop after another. I fail to understand why Martin wasn't playing in the second half---he clearly has shown he's a shot blocker and would likely have helped prevent some of those easy hoops as Hutch and the other bigs appeared to have no clue what defense is. Hutch did look pretty decent offensively in the first half (nice surprise), but his and the rest of the front line's anemic "O" just killed us and left WAY too big a burden on our backcourt.
Our strategy and approach in the last possession of regulation completely drifted from what got us back into the game after getting behind by 7-8 points. I loved our general patience and especially Kareem's postups (along, of course with those timely treys) until the last minute or so. Where was that strategy in the last possession? Instead we opted for one pathetic trey attempt and a second that became necessary because the clock was running out. And our defense in the last couple minutes of OT looked like we reverted back to the pedestrian style we played much of the second half of regulation.
Like nearly everyone, I love Tinks but some of his rotations in the last month have just been perplexing. No doubt he has been "tinkering" (pun intended ) attempting to find some combination that works--but just when some guys begin to play well (like Martin and Kemp last week), they seem to not get the PT that maybe they should if the team is having success. Didn't understand at all the few minutes that Kemp got tonight. Who knows? Maybe Martin and Kemp weren't 100% healthy or something related?
Despite these many concerns and frustrations, I still believe Tinks and the other coaches can get these guys to jell, but the players need to step up and demonstrate a better focus (at times some of them appear to zone out) and sense of urgency. Otherwise we are looking at a really mediocre squad come tournament time and a very disappointing year by Griz standards and expectations.

Thanks for the report and analysis. UM is clearly playing better in the last 7 or so games, and must have played fairly well to take a good team to overtime on the road. They seem to battle hard now, in both the close wins and losses. When the other team goes on a run, UM claws back, and doesn't fold. One shot or point later in regulation would have likely won the game. For the talent the team has, including the gaps, the team seems to have come around and gotten into the ballpark.
I am still hopeful they will do well at the tourney. Maybe they will get hot shooting. Free throws were terrific last night. Defense still seems to hurt them at times. Rebounding has improved. But as you noted, giving up so many offensive rebounds at certain times was a killer.
UM actually had more offensive rebounds (13) than UNC (11), and each had 30 total rebounds. UNC was the conference leader in rebounding margin coming into the game, I believe I heard on the radio. Martin didn't have a rebound in 9 minutes. Hutch had 7 in 17, and Kemp had 4 in 12. Hutch had 4 offensive rebounds, and Kemp had 2.
...Kareem Jamar was unreal in the second half. His heart, desire and skills will be sorely missed next year. Announcers kept mentioning his ability to keep the ball alive, penetrate and then either finish or pop back out for open jumpers. Defensive rebounds, taking the big "3" or pull up 15 footers, playing the "5" position late in the game, bringing the ball up vs. the pressmakes his FT's.
The points didn't quite roll like AJ's in Ogden a few years ago but the guy made play after play after play down the stretch. He deserved for that last shot in regulation to go in and it wa probably only a couple inches off.
Griz team plays with heart and energy. We get mismatched inside and would like to see a little more toughness from the bigs but we should be proud of the Griz this year. NC knew they were in a dogfight last night and the fans rushing the court confirms the respect our team has.
