Griz v. Cats

Good game, the cats shot the ball well. Like others said we played better when we ran off a turnover but our half court game was outta place. We definity need to get better shooting from the charity stripe, 13-22 is not gonna cut it. We'll have to play better next weekend if we want to keep the streak alive.. Looking forward to it.

Do you think the game would be in overtime if the Cats had not played better basketball to this point?

I think this is the best game the Bobcats have played in over five years; against anyone.

+1

Cats blew their load in this game. Get ready for the second half swoon cat fans.

Jamar played a great game. So glad to see him coming on strong in the last few games after a slow start to the season. For all those getting on Ward early on, how about his play down the stretch. Sure, a crappy pass at the end, but he started to assert himself at the end and got some tough baskets that kept us in it. Liked seeing that. Gregory had another strong outing, can't wait to see how much more he progresses over the next few years. Loved DeShields steal and ball fake. That was beautiful and I hope we can see that kind of finish from him more often. As others stated, Coleman is becoming the solid contributor that we have needed him to be all season. Hope he keeps it up! Griz need to get back to being a great FT shooting team. If the shot like normal this game could have been a potential double-digit win for the Griz in regulation. Anway, Great finish, Griz!

(However, if we play like we have been playing the last few games, the Griz are in for a rude awakening next week.)

A few additional thoughts from last nights game that I saw;

1. Gregory's injuries must've hampered him on defense, MSU picked on him a lot. Watching him play in other games this year he was pretty solid on D, but last night MSU picked on him in that 2-3 zone, esp in the corner.

2. Loved the OT set of Cherry/Jamar/Gregory/Weisner/Ward - incredibly quick and shut MSU out from making a shot until 30 seconds left in the OT.

3. Coleman can't win a jump ball anytime soon but as a power-forward he was playing some of the better inside defense, better that Hutch or Martin last night.

4. It's really cool to see guys come off the bench and show they're part of this years team but also give us great signs of the future. Weisner, Coleman, and Deshields all were big factors in the game.

5. As others have posted, I'm worried about Weber - Griz are showing they have issues with big men. MSU's center had pretty good success underneath.

Also, inquiring minds want to know; How was that tailgating, Becker?
Must have been a success? We still havent heard from him. Haha
I guess it depends on how you define success. haha, i concider it a success because i pounded brews for a few hours before the game in the back of an 01 GMC lol.....My buddy from bozeman got a late start and didnt show up till 6:15 but my brother and i froze our asses off from bout 4:45 till we headed inside fifteen mins before tip off! No egrizzers showed but maybe next time. But i would have to say since i had some beers befor an AWESOME game and didnt get soem kind of open container ticket..it was definatly a success!

Thanks for all the reports from the game. How was the crowd? They seemed pretty loud on TV?
it seemed pretty damn loud! I seriously love it for the few games a season when people show up. Normally these games are toward the end of the season...well they were last year anyway...i hope that all the poeple there had a great time and decide to come back for the rest of the home games! its a hell of an atmosphere and alot of fun.

Hats off to the cats for shooting lights out. Im liking Weisner in the clutch. Will had no business getting that T and sitting. His head clearly was somewhere else.
I disagree on the T. Cherry may have said something bad, which could have warranted the Tech, but he's done that exact same thing for 2 years after making big plays...go back and watch the BSC Championship game or either "State" game last year. Seriously. His body language looked almost identical, so the officials may have been a little whistle happy there, unless he said something pretty bad. :twocents:

let me try something i learned in football season...

"griz won. cats lost. congrats on beating the worst bobcat team we've had in 2 decades. you think your so great and you barely beat a terrible msu team. you'll get crushed in the tourney. you've been exposed and once again you'll make a mockery of the conference when you play a meaningful game. enjoy it while it lasts because the cats will be back. ftg."

that sound about right? i admit i had to go back and read the football threads so i can't take credit. ;)

in all seriousness, that was a great game. cats played as well as i have seen them but they just couldn't make plays down the stretch. the griz hung in all game and showed why they were the better team. made plays when they mattered. despite the loss i'm very happy with the way the cats played. i'd guess this game will really give them some confidence going forward. and as bummed as i was about the loss...i won some decent money betting the spread 'cause 15.5 points is just way too much for a game like this.

great game. :thumb:

I agree. The T took him out of his game. He has got to be able to over come that kind of adversity. Moreover, the players should know by now that if you get 2 fouls in the first half your ass is going to sit for the rest of the half. Play smart.

I am not sure if Huse influenced the refs, but this exact same thing happened in Bozeman last year minus the technical, and Cherrry played an identical game last night. Just not the same Cherry. I hate to admit it, but I think Huse knows how to take Will out of the game.

So, here's my thoughts from watching the game on TV. Please note that this won't have the GF-24/BWahlberg/PeauxRogue/MTgrizrule panache:

* Kudos to the Cats - they shot lights out, and made tough shots all game. Everytime we came back on a run, they had an answer.

* Our D was solid all night. Part of it was Cats using more clock, but the other part was our D not giving easy open looks/paths to the basket very often all night.

* I honestly believed when the Cats went up by 3(4?) with under a minute left, and we immediately gave them the ball back on offense, I figured that was it. Kudos to the guys for not giving up and playing tough the whole game

* I think Tinks likes having a more traditional 5 just on principle, and that is the kind of O he is most comfortable running. However, Hutch sat the whole 2nd half, and this may be the signal that Tinks is reluctantly saying "look - we're gonna have to go small, and kick-butt with it because that's what we have"

* I'm no b-ball expert, but I think Hutch's biggest problem is he has hands of concrete. Even when rebounding half the time, he bobbles the hell out of the ball. When he does catch it (the ball) on offense, he's like a dog that chases a car - he doesn't know what to do with it once he's got it, because he rarely catches the damn thing cleanly.

* Weisner is clutch as hell. Yeah, maybe he was sitting because he wasn't as focused on D as he needed to be, but he seems to come up huge everytime we have no answer on offense (what game was it last year when he turned the game for us? In like 90 seconds of play, he had a couple steals, a block, and like 6 points).

* Jamar was excellent - he went cold late for a bit

* The free throw bug appears to have cropped up again, but it was nice seeing Gregory calmly nail a couple when everyone else was clanking them. I honestly think Cherry's issue this game was that he was letting his shooting elbow fly open again when shooting free throws. His last 2/3 he nailed, and he kept his elbow tucked.

* Lastly I don't think Cherry quite has his feel for the game back yet. Last year, he knew exactly when to push it or slow it down on offense and when he needed to bring the O or just become a distributor. That was his biggest advantage last year in my opinion. Hopefully as he gets his feet wet more he'll get his feel back for the flow of the game.

* Ok. Seriously, this is the last one - DeShields steal, ball-fake, and lay-up was beautiful. I don't think he makes that play last year. It shows how much he's grown as a player. First, stole the ball, started to push it, then broke into the clear with a beautiful behind the back dribble, then attacked the defender, and cleared him with a saavy ball fake rather than trying to just go through and hope for the foul, or pass to the player the defender was looking to. Finally, stayed controlled all the way through to the finish for the easy bucket. Maybe the play of the night outside Weisner's 3.

--Sorry for rambling. Hopefully all that makes sense! I guess I had more to talk about than I thought! 8-)

What a great game... kudos to both teams for playing such a competitive game... this is why rivalry games are so great... it brings out the best in both teams!

Regarding Will: Part of what has made Will Cherry one of Montana's best-ever point guards is his intensity. His ability to lead, control his teammates and control the game is why Montana's where it has been over the past 3-4 years.

Conversely, it has occasionally had negative effects. Like Montana's loss against Wisconsin. Like last night, as much in his free throw shooting as in other intangibles. He expects a lot from himself & puts a lot of pressure on himself.

Don't know if Will was responding to an earlier taunt when he got his T at the 13:49 mark, but the evidence was clear: he drove for a layup on early O and then intentionally bumped his left shoulder into the guy he beat (I think it was Marcus Colbert), where he was IMMEDIATELY T'd & then verbally warned. Very clear.

Will's later charge was clearly questionable, but both plays served as a signal that the officials intended to control the game... and they did from there on out in a relatively fairly called game that actually swung toward the Griz late.

Early in the second half Cherry kept himself under control when the Cats' Paul EGWUONWU (man, I'd love to see what Tinkle could do with that guy!) stuffed Will & immediately got into Will's face with a direct taunt. Cherry just walked away. The SAME ref who T'd Will then quickly warned Egwounwu, but didn't T him: he should have, because it was an equally aggressive move. Egwounwu did back off considerably from there.

I think Big Sky refs may be trying to control games early this year. Maybe it's because of Southern Utah. I've already heard & read a lot of stuff about tensions between the T-Birds and several other teams.

Whatever the issue, Will got the message. He IS still rounding into playing shape & is probably itching to be at his best, and is probably pushing himself a little too much. Let's hope last night will be one more step toward a good upcoming week from Will against the Bengals and the Wildcats! The Griz "Will" have to play much better & smarter next week (Think Bill Evans doesn't have a plan mapped out for this week? Think again)

We drove by and saw a couple guys sitting in the back of pickup with wood racks on the side, figured it was you guys but couldn't get the rest of my party to stop. You need to think about having a fire pit going, maybe I could talked someone in my party into going over then and saved myself $5 bucks a beer in SkyClub haha.

fun game though.
