Griz v. Cats Game Thread

Just an AWESOME gut check by the fellas--down your two best starters and still beat your arch rival on the road--yeah!

Gonna be a tough one down @ SUU Monday night, but I love this team's heart and competitive spirit. Too bad NAU couldn't have held on against Weebs.

Go get 'em GRIZ! :thumb:

Just got back from the game. Thoughts:

-super physical game. Refs let both sides play until about 8 min.left in the 2nd half

-Keron played super smart

-dunno why the cats didn't give it to Davis more through first half. Super obvious our paint d is the weakest part of our game

-cats mainly got back into the game because we were in "play not to lose" mode. Dunno if that was mandated from Tinks or not, but when cats came back, it looked like we were just milking clock - pass, pass, pass around the perimeter, throw up a shot deep in the shot clock

-kudos to both teams for keeping their cool in a very physical game.

-i was stunned how well we played the game without cherry and ward

-Wiley will be a good one once he figures out the nuances of college bball. He wasn't always in the right spot, but he hustled like crazy the whole time he was out there, and played some good minutes

- soo, I sat in the upper section with mostly griz fans during both games, and the ladies crowd, though smaller was always up and cheering the ladies when they came off the court after a good stretch of play. The mens crowd, though vocal throughout the game mostly stayed sat down the whole time-pretty disappointing if you ask me.

-finally, my lungs are shot, and voice gone from cheering at both games. Way to go to the guys and ladies for sweeping "state" today. It's a great day to be a Grizzly! Go Griz! FTC!

Way to represent, MMM!!

This game was huge from a tie-break perspective.

If the Griz beat SUU, they need only to win one of their two remaining games at home, since they will have the tie-break over Weber based on their sweep of MSU.

But even if they should lose to SUU, things still look pretty good for the Griz in terms of the tie break:

Currently, SUU sits at 8-9. With a win over the Griz (God forbid!) they'd move to 9-9. The cats are 8-10. But next week, the cats have two winnable games at home (NAU and Sac) and SUU has to travel to UNC and ND (both potential losses).

But perhaps the biggest key is that MSU holds the tie-break over SUU because they've swept them. So, if MSU and SUU end the season tied (not an unlikely scenario) the Griz would still have the tie-break advantage even if they lose to SUU.

Nice position to be in.

I started in the upper section but couldn't stay.... Several "F you"s from cat fans and very tired legs later my voice is gone and I'm happy. Always worth not having a voice to do that hahaha. I love bugging cat fans

I think Wayne sometimes gets happy feet when we are slightly ahead towards the end of the game. Instead of keeping the tempo and consistancy flowing he slows it down to the point of playing not to lose instead of playing to win. There is a fine line between those definitions though. The other team grabs the momentum in alot of cases.

Weird, I was in the upper section behind the griz bench, like 2nd row of seats up - no F-yous from cat fans at either game...were you more towards mid court? If so, I wouldn't be surprised as that was a big section of cat fans.

Totally agree - it's fine to do that if ya got a solid post, and just ride them home (like we did with BQ, and a couple times with ward), but we were playing great pedal to the metal. Should have kept it going, not too surprising that he slowed it down a bunch with 2/3 best players out.

Typical bobpu$$ies not enough guts to say it right to you. Probably because that was some student section.

Hey, I had so much fun they can say whatever they want and I'm fine. Go Griz!!

We were in 211 above bench mostly Griz fans... Section next to us was all cat fans and very quiet... The kids expected trash talk like they remember from last stomping... It didn't happen.

I was across from you all. I sat in 110 with quite a few other Griz fans around. Everyone around us was civil. The game was pretty fun all around. Called well pretty much the whole game. Some things I wanted to comment on:

Gregory's foul at about 5:30 left in the game was crap. He got position while boxing out and the ref whistled him. It was good hustle trying to get a rebound.

When they called the Weisner's foul on Kareem, yeah, that was a head scratcher. But the worst part was the ref stops everything to go chat with Tinkle about it. That was out of line. He shouldn't have indulged Tinkle. It just made him look like an idiot. Even more so than getting the foul wrong.

Coleman's last taken charge was a thing of beauty. And really enjoyed watching Keron play tonight. He has vastly improved his finishing ability this season and, dare I say, he is electric at the rim.

Kudos to Davis. He was a beast. Whoever was wondering why they didn't get it to him more in the first, when I went back and watched after I got home, he got a lot of touches in the first half but just missed or was defended better than in the second half.

What a bizarre end of the game if you attended. It made more sense with the announcers saying why they just called the game, but if you were there it was weird to have them whistle before the full-court heave, have everyone stand around, and then just wave it off and run to the locker room. Everyone around me was scratching their heads.

Also, if you recorded the game, you can see me and my kids filing out of the gym behind Tinkle as he was being interviewed. There you go.

Go Griz!

I thought the row that transpired between the older of the three referees with Tinkle was after the flagrant foul called against Weisner? Bogus even at that. The bobcat player appeared to be jumping for a pass reception and landed against Weisner, who stood his ground, and then fell on the floor; the referee made a call judging by effect instead of what led up to the commotion. At least that's the way I saw it. But there was a previous foul called that appeared to be on Kareem that was called on Weisner instead, which I was pro and con about.

One big question I have is why did Jamar only get 1 free throw at the end? The play by play shows him missing 2 free throws, but he only took 1.

I recorded the game and watched that part a couple of times. Jamar was clearly going for the shot when he was fouled, and you can see Tinkle talking to the ref signalling 2 shots, and then holding up 2 again and nodding his head. Kind of odd... didn't matter, but still kind of odd and would have sucked if that full court shot had gone in to tie it when the refs had Jamar shoot a 1 and 1 instead of 2 FTs like he should have..

There may have been one, and rewatching that call after the fact (all I saw at the game was the cat player flying all of a sudden) I don't think it was really bad, but there was a little acting by him although Weis DID step into him and throw him his shoulder. Certainly didn't seem malicious.

But Tinkle and the old ref getting into it was definitely the mis-applied foul. Bizarre.
