GRIZ/UTEs

A few GRIZ have woken up. They are not giving up. Way to fight back boys, that is a great sign. Keep it going, no hill for a climber! :thumb:

Jamar had a great second game 14pts, 9reb, and 4ast. Cherry played well and Willed us back in game. Selvig showed up for two mins., and Qvale in foul trouble was out of it. We will be a good team this season. It would have been nice to have Tech and Idaho before Nevada and Utah on the schedule!

I will be going to the Idaho game when I get back.

As for this game, great 2nd half and heart. I love listening to Tinkle in post game. He comments with "WE WILL (insert this or that)" That is so refreshing and exudes confidence from this fan. I would love to hear a certain football coach to learn the art of instilling confidence publicly with your team, even after a loss.

Then again, Tinkle did not have that at 1st either. He sure in the hell has that now.

I have no doubt Tinkle is becoming a great coach, and the perfect coach for the GRIZ.

Tinkle really wants to see Selvig more aggressive it sounds like. I hope that burst of aggressiveness we got from Selvig tonight in the 2nd half will continue. He's got all of the offensive tools to be a big time scorer for the Griz.... He looks to pass it way too much in my opinion though passing up some shots that he would likely hit, or opportunities to score in the paint (basically the same thing Tinkle said).

Jamar had a very nice game. True freshman coming in and damn near having a double double against Utah is pretty impressive. I can see why he's starting.

Hope Wood finds his shot again. These past couple games have been rough shooting for him :( I'm sure he'll find it though. Sounds like he hustles his ass off out there though and is on every loose ball. Mick compared him to Belknap before the game I believe... I hope he's right! Belknap was all hustle, and sometimes got his ass completely kicked in the process to the point where I thought there was no way he was going to get up off the court..but he always did :)

Reader didn't play, and Autry only played a bit. I wonder why Reader didn't play with Qvale in foul trouble...

you have to wonder: how can a team do so well in significant stretches on the road against quality opponents, then--presto!--disappear so completely that in minutes they blow themselves right out of a game?

jamarr: a star is born.
a.j.: miss him dearly.
reader: deja vu the quale redshirt blunder?
selvig: will he find his inner linebacker?
wood: will he find his shot?
cherry: early cheap fouls. again.
tinks: post-game remarks laced with "toughness," "intensity," "edge," "focus," but we can't get down 20 before those qualities show up. sayin' ain't is.

Couldnt watch or listen so...i dont know sh#t but i am encouraged by the game forum and stats. we are going to be a pretty darn good team come conference(maybe sooner).

KAREEM(man thats fun to say) showed us he is what we thought and more. in the 2 games i watched he looked at his best in the mid range, but is obviously comfy shootin the long ball, i jst hope he doesnt get stuck on it. i dont like the ratio of 6 3ball at's on 9 at's overall. he did get to the line 7 times so i assume he had some attempts inside taken away to foul. gonna be a star we are UUBER lucky to have him.

will seemed to play better offensively. regardless of his faults we are again UUBER lucky to have this kid in a griz uniform. soon as he takes a little pressure off himself he is going to be great.

selvig, it seems, is to passive everytime i watch him. some of it is his unselfishness and OUTSTANDING court vision but as a leader and captain on a team full of newcomers he has to realize he needs to look to score more.

agree with dex, confused about is the redshirt situation. reader barely played 1st game none 2nd. opposite for vaughn. if they would accept it i really believe 1 of if not both should have redshirted( probably vaughn) but just strange to me. and though its obvious it would be amazing to have Q for another year i dont know if i would say not redshirting him was a blunder. he was very effective defensively for us he just got hurt. with reader and autry, if your going to play them, play them, if not redshirt. but Q was our starting 5 man but injuries and fouls de-railed that. but man i salivate at the thought of him playin 1 more year.

In any matter i will be at the idaho game and most home games this year. cant wait to swatch this team develop. we are going to be very good at some point this year and have an EXTREMELY bright future. with Kareem and will together for 3 years, these kids just dont fail and will constantly push eachother and others to work hard, get better and play hard and to win.

Back from the game. Toward the end of the first half and about half way through the 2nd we were in a funk. Utah was deffinitely quicker and more athletic man for man. A marked improvement from last year but are picked for 6th I believe in the MWC because of youth and new players. Qvale sat the bench more minutes then his fouls would dictate. I believe Tink benched him because he was not playing with any energy or heart. Selvig had 4 pts until 10 min left in the game and then woke up. He made some shots and plays but for most of the game he was not aggressive and just going through the motions. Cherry was the real deal and the Utah fans around me were quite complimentary toward his play. He had a very good game. Stock just does not have the game to play with athletic teams. I was scratching my head at some of the substitution patterns that Tinks would employ. He may have been trying to see who could play together but at times he had players playing that were not athletic and could not make a run. Toward the end of the game Steward, Jamar, Cherry, Selvig and Qvale had the most consistant all around game. Tinks is still trying to find who can play the 2 guard. In my opinion that is an open slot waiting for someone to step up. The refs called a tight game. A lot of blocking calls and anybody driving to the hoop always got a quick whistle in their favor. The griz missed a lot of lay ups banging them off the backboard. I doubt they shot 50% from the free throw line. That being said I did see some very positive play and as time goes on they will gel and do fine in the BSC. Their were moments of awesome play. Ward like Stocks was over matched at this level. We do have some athletes though and recruiting is getting better. If they can put two halves together they can play with and beat teams in bigger conferences.

this is the same thing that happened in the Nevada game - what is happening here? Poor 1/2 time adjustments by the Griz? Griz getting tired? teams figuring out scheme and coaching around it? coincidence?

Now I see why Weebs hates these guys:
I hope Weber kicks some butt Saturday.

Wow...reading that little shot the writer took at Montana you'd think Utah just came off an awesome season with a great NCAA Tournament run.... Speaking of that...what seed were they last year in the NCAA tournament? Oh wait.... :D

I know I'll be crucified for this, but: what was the shot the writer took at UM? I know he said that UM doesn't constitute "fierce competition", but can we really argue that?

Coming off of a 14-17 season with losses to Weber State, Idaho, Seattle, swept by New Mexico with an average margin of 10.0, swept by Colorado State with an average margin of 12.0 . . . Utah probably isn't considered "fierce competition" either.

Um....I was under the impression that the author was saying the Griz weren't exactly fierce competition (after Utah beat them). So, I guess, same question as before...?

CDAGRIZZ: That comment is what the previous posters are referring to. I was at the game and lack of intensity and commitment was the theme for the Griz for a good part of the game. I think Tinks alluded to it post game (toughness). In fairness though, Utah's quickness and athleticism caused us to become timid during the game. It is probably fair to characterize the lady sports writer's comment as a not so suttle jab at the griz's play.

Oh, OK. Because, I thought the losing team would be rightly subject to jabs until said team gets their collective act together; which I, and, I trust, you, hope they do. I think we are on the same page here.
