GRIZ/UMW

OK, nice win for the Griz. I am interested to hear from those in attendance. Specifically I want to know what all the jawing was about. I saw Rorie was really talking a lot on the court on Defense. Come on Griz fans, I need to know!
I was there, I guess I didn't see a ton jawing going on. A couple of UWM guys were pretty demonstrative, I think Rorie wasn't having any of it. Nothing out of the norm from what I saw, just couple of our guys reminding them who's court they were playing on.

Thanks! Rorie was definitely dialed in all game.

Glad that I unexpectedly got to attend this game. It likely will be my last game to attend this season, barring a miracle at work.

Very impressed with Krslovic's improvement in keeping position for rebounds. He looks like he can average near double figures in rebounds in conference play.

All the GRIZ guards played well and contributed. Rorie and Oguine, athletically and skill wise, can match up with most guards in the nation. I can see both getting a shot in the NBA, with continual improvement. Oguine is a huge impact player, even without scoring. His shutdown defense, and rebounding from the guard position are huge for the GRIZ. Meanwhile Dunn and Wright add leadership, solid shooting, defense, and ball distribution.

The back and forth jawing was intensified at the end of the 1st half when Oguine took a hard accidental elbow to the eye. After that, the whole team got a little more fired up, especially the guards. Rorie has an edge to him, very much like Cherry did. He led by example, and Wright and Dunn duplicated it as well. They shot well, defended well, and played as smart of a game as they have all season. I believe only committed 9 turnovers. That is amazing, considering UMW takes pride in defense, and plays it very well. If the GRIZ can take care of the ball like that every game, they will be hard to beat.

A lot to like from this game. The GRIZ left about 10 points off the scoreboard with at least 4 missed close in bunny shots. That was driving Coach DeCuire crazy as well. Those missed easy shots almost cost the GRIZ the game. Also, the officiating was as consistent as we have seen all season. The officials let the kids play, for the most part. The coaches and teams had to be pleased with the officiating overall. The officials were very consistent in what they would and would not call. That is about as much as coaches can ask for from officials. Granted, there were mistakes, but very well balanced game by the officials. Does anyone know if any of those officials are regular Big Sky officials? If so, I hope that game is a sign of things to come from officiating this season.

Great game GRIZ, let's build on this game!!!!

Cheers to the officials, they did do well, let them play.

HOWEVER

The crowd was really quite, kinda of like a tennis match......BAD.. two minutes to go, up 3 and the crowd was sitting down...unexcusable.

Yeah you the student section.

Great report, GrizRule. I welcomed your return to Missoula, but these hours...sheesh! Can't you possibly change them? I mean, this is the only live report we get all year? Let me speak to your employer. For those of us on the board, this is a gross disservice to humanity, like Mother Teresa calling in sick, or Sully Sullenberger driving for Uber, or AllWeather losing his sense of humor. I hope you get my point.

The thing about pre-season games is, it's too early to know the relative strengths of the teams you play. Exhibit A: Us. You look at our record and you say, they're not very good. But that doesn't take into account our strength of schedule or our injuries. I looked at Milwaukee's record and didn't figure they'd be much of a challenge. But it sounds like they're much better than their record. I've got a hunch San Jose is going to be a much greater challenge than we might have anticipated before the year; they beat Santa Clara last night, and have wins at WSU and Idaho, where a year ago they were pathetic (except against us, where we were way more pathetic.)

So be it. We'll see how this plays out over time. Weber lost to Denver last night, but again, I have no idea if Denver is any good. We'll know at the end of the year, after the big sample size.

Nice game and good result. Fun to watch. Went fast, maybe because of the few fouls.

Griz played well almost all game, but the good-shooting start, with a bunch of 3 pointers, and only 1 turnover for the early part of half, is when UM took a decent lead. Couldn't get it huge, but kept it. Defended the 3 and a particular bigger guy who shot fast, better in the second half helped. UWM didn't shoot the 3 as well in the second half either. UWM had 4 more 3's than Griz in first half. No times of weak play or lapses. Teams were shooting 56% and 57% at one point early in 2d half. UM is a very unselfish team.

Rorie had a very nice game, and took very good care of the ball, but took 2 shorter running jumpers in a row and missed later in game, and then missed two 3 pointers, at least one of which was long and probably not the right shot. DeCuire obviously likes him on the floor, as he has high minutes. I wish he didn't lose his man and have defensive lapses as much. Great player, tho.

Wright had a very nice game. Seemed to get going with more minutes and was important in the win and the second half. Nice to see that.

Dunn had a nice game. 4-4 shooting, all from 3. NO TO. 29 minutes.

Kryslovich had a terrific game and lots of rebounds (130and very good defense. He might have been my player of the game. I think he looks much slimmer this year.

Very nice to have Oguine back. Played well.

Lopez had solid game, a few nice shots, and good defense.

Don't know why Pridgett didn't play more, but got taken out early in second half when he got outmuscled in paint or had defensive lapse. Can't recall exactly what it was, but Travis took him out right then after maybe less than 3 minutes.

Samuelson missed several close hooks, paint shots, that he was making against Wyo. He didn't have to the strength to keep a muscular and good post from backing in and scoring, and Travis put Kryslovic back in. Guy scored 3 in a row on him, I think.

Team took good care of ball most of time, and I think had only 2 TO in second half.

Refs were good, except the black guy seemed to make 2 questionable blocking fouls against Griz and a couple more calls that looked wrong. Still good game by refs overall.

I didn't notice lots of jawing, but there was a period when Rorie and the guy he was defending were jawing alot. Mostly from Rorie. Something must have irked him. Even to the point of talking and pointing, after Rorie scored on him.

The dance team was dancing and looking awesome. Very talented. Must have had a good recruiting year.

Why did Pridgett only play 9 minutes??

Because 1. Pridgett started the game with a Turnover and a foul in the first minute.
and then after that 2. the other 3 veteran guards all played great once they got a chance.

Re: Pridgett. There is a quote in the paper saying DeCuire told his players if you can't guard your man you won't play. I don't know if that was why we didn't see him more, but man is he exciting to watch.
