Griz to play U of Washington

Spanky, no smack intended, but just curious, are you a newer GRIZ fan? Like 2001 and up?

Funny; Spanky is as old as the hills. And correct. Outside of the BSC, why would anyone be aware of the several members that never make the playoffs, never draw five figures, rarely have a .500 season, etc. And have little academic notoriety...

Do you really think recruits (particularly out of state) come to UM for the opportunity to play SUU and UNC? They want the schedule to be familiar and impressive to their circle of friends and relatives back home. In the Read years when we were wannabes and played up a lot, it got us on the map to play up tough with a few wins (e.g. OSU) and several tough losses (e.g., UO, WSU). It is a significant help in recruiting.

Everyone's love affair with FCS football is the playoffs and deciding the National Champion on the field. Knowing this, how does playing a FBS team, which more times than not will be a loss, help in getting to this goal? Since a championship is the ultimate goal, does it not make more sense to have a solid FCS schedule, with all games winnable? :coffee:

I think this is false. Out of state kids that are fringe FBS players look at the success of the program. They look at programs that win, and have a chance to win a Championship every season. It is the success of the program more than playing OSU or WSU. Getting a chance to play one of these schools may be considered a plus, but is definitely not anything that would sway a kid.

I agree with you, GBox.

You're welcome to your opinion; mine is based on discussions with numerous recruits and recruiters over the years at several programs. Yours?

So Kem, you want to tell me that a 42-16 loss to the only FBS team the Griz have played over the last 5 seasons sways out of state kids to play football at Montana? That the Griz not possibly playing another FBS school until 2017 will have kids turn down Montana? Or do you think that playing a full FCS schedule, lets say going 9-2 or 10-1, advancing deep into the playoffs, and maybe even winning it, might be more of a factor?

Most kids that you want from out of state are not targeting FCS; they accept it when it's their best deal left on the table. They know almost nothing about it; where would they learn - articles in the Seattle, SF, LA, Denver or Phoenix papers? See if you can find them. They know FBS teams and if there were some consistently on the schedule in future years, it would a strong selling point. It's exposure for them to major college football even if they didn't have the offers. They always want to see how they measure up. It is seldom that the schedule for the next four years doesn't come up in a recruiting discussion.

Argreed Kem. Good posts. Pflugrad had said he wanted to play an FBS team every 3 years, so every player would have a chance to play against the best competition once in their careers, an this is what he was telling recruits.

People that think playing against Tennessee in front of 95,000 in the almighty SEC country wasn't used as a recruiting tool, are nuts

As will I. Lots of family in Seattle area....and I lived there myself for 3 years. Better break out the rain ponchos from storage. 8-) 8-)

Likely not a need for rain ponchos. The game will be in September and as a season ticket holder the last 14 years or so there have been very few games where rain gear was required. Seattle (and western Montana) has some of the nicest weather on earth in August/September.

Yeah, the Griz would have pasted the Dawgs for about a 3 year stretch in the Willingham years.

Kem, I agree that most out of state kids are not looking at FCS, but you are wrong on how most find out about. Most know nothing until they are actually contacted by a particular school, and then they use this thing called the internet to learn more. What do they find out on the internet....that Montana is a top FCS program that is very successful on the field with a chance to win a Championship every year. Very few out of state kids see a story about Montana getting pasted by Tennessee in the paper and then think, I would like to play football there.

+1

grizindabox....the student-athletes look at many things. They are very interested in the coach and the schedule. If they have the talent, usually they look to a FBS school. If they are borderline, then probably FCS and the schedule is going to be very important. They will rely on their coach and parents for advise when it is time for a decision. Don't forget the importance of the conference affiliation of the school when it comes time for the student-athlete to make his/her choice.

Spanky, we already know where you stand...you would like 11-12 FBS games every year.

It was the OTHER 10 months of the year where it sucked balls living there. :?

Must have changed since i lived there - Rain was always scheduled to start in conjunction with the Puyallup Fair in September. Then Monsoons started Thanksgiving weekend.

It always rains in Puyallup. Not saying it never rains here in August or Sept., but I remember very few September games that wasn't nice.
