Griz to play Huskies

Not sure if this has been reported locally, but the Seattle papers have said that the Griz have signed a contract to play the Huskies in Seattle next year. Huskies will be young but have some amazing talent coming in. Should be fun.

Years ago -- I don't remember the year for sure ... probably December of '84 or '85 ... the Huskies played in Missoula. My spouse and I had been in Seattle for a Seahawks game (that's another story in itself) and were forced to come all the way back on terrible airline-provided buses, due to fog EVERYWHERE in the northwest. Anyway, the Huskies BB team was on the same bus as we were from Spokane to Missoula -- and they kept the entire bus load of people entertained. Firstly, they were mostly too tall for the bus seats, so sat mostly in the aisles, and the center (I can't think of his name ... he was Dutch, I believe, and went on to play in the NBA) sat in the entry stairwell, leaning against the driver's chair. We were given sack lunches, and these boys ate ANYTHING the rest of us didn't eat, and were still hungry! We got into Missoula in the middle of the night, and the teams played that next night -- and the Griz won! We were at the game and, of course, rooting for the Griz, but had a real soft place in our hearts for the Washington kids with whom we'd shared a five-hour bus ride. It's a favorite memory of ours.

Thanks, Grizdawg. Detlef is who I was thinking of. He was a kick, and made everyone on the bus laugh a dozen times. He almost never stopped talking, until he finally fell asleep only a few miles from Missoula.

Those were good series the Griz used to have with the Huskies. One of those years (I believe it was 85), Washington came to Dahlberg and had on shorts that said down the side, "The U", which is what the Univ of Washington is known as here in Seattle. But man, we let those guys have it from the Zoo, taunting them about being "THE" U, as if it was the only one. I think the Griz won by about 15 that night. Awesome.
