GRIZ tidbits after team camp

Thanks to bad weather and busy friends, I was able to get time to take in GRIZ team camp. Here are some observations and info.

(1) Tinkle and his staff deserve credit for increasing the recognition of this program. For those that don't know, here is what I am talking about. In year 1 of team camp, there were 14 or 16 teams. This year it has grown to 68 teams, at least I think that was the number I heard. Teams coming from ID, MT, WA, WY, Canada, and NV. Why the growth with other good to great programs within 1,000 miles of Missoula? Pretty simple strategy by the GRIZ. Affordability=recognition and interest. Other div 1 team camps are charging $200 to $400 per player. Meanwhile the GRIZ are charging way less, I believe close to 50% less. Families and/or programs cannot afford other camps anymore, and the families that can afford it are turned off by selling a name (Gonzaga was the most commonly mentioned name I heard from HS coaches and parents). I talked to parents and coaches. I heard over and over how appreciative the coaches and parents were for the quality of competition at an affordable/realistic price. Every one talked with spoke highly of the coaches as well, and how they will be back every year for this camp. This camp had some very good programs and players at it, but just short of getting the great to elite programs. Tinkle is very proud of this, and sounded like this will continue to get better for the GRIZ.

(2) Do not be surprised to see the GRIZ continue signing guards and small forwards. There are not as many true quality bigs out there, and the ones that are quality are playing travel ball or at elite camps. All the better plays and teams were guard/wing oriented teams. Only 1 6'8" plus big with some potential was all I seen there. That player is the Edwards kid from Glacier, which I came away with mixed bag. The positives being good offensive awareness, and passing out of teams collapsing on him (very few turnovers and found open perimeter players for open shots). He has good hands and catches most everything that comes his way. He secures his rebounds without doing the tipping crap. His perimeter and FT shooting is suprisingly good at times, yet inconsistent. That should come with time, age, and experience. Physically he has a very good frame for Div 1 ball.

He has a lot to work on. He will only be a Jr this year, which is good for him. If he were a SR, he would not be a div 1 talent. Being a jr, he has time to improve. 1st and foremost, he needs to get a mean and nasty big man attitude. He has to learn to demand the ball and get open. He needs to work on getting position by earning it. He needs to work on his footwork a lot on offense and defense. A lot of jump roping would do him wonders. He jumps flat footed quite often, and his game is entirely relying on his height. He needs to learn to work with his height. That height will not cut it against better competition with players his size. Basically, if this kid gets mean, and works on his footwork, he can play div 1 ball. If he stays satisfied with letting his height be a good hs player, he will not be div 1. The next 2 years will make or break this kid. How bad does he want it?

(3) Get excited about Deshields. He is a gym rat, and motivated to never live in the Baltimore area he grew up in. He was the most intense recruit in Tinkle's time here. He showed up with a point to prove, and raised the intensity of every player immediately. He will not back down from the likes of Will Cherry when they match up. Deshields was sold on Missoula and the GRIZ, and the GRIZ are 100% sold on him too.

(4) I hear Huestis is contemplating transferring out of Stanford. AS to if this helps the GRIZ or not, only time will tell. This was not told to me by any GRIZ coach either.

(5) The GRIZ and Cal Poly are in the running for a PG from Post Falls which will be a SR this season. Sorry cannot remember his name, but did see him play. He is quick, solid ball handler, great passer, good defender, and very good 3 point shooter. Bryan Ellis, but with a 3 pt shot.

(6) GRIZ schedule is up in the air. Tinkle is trying to get some good competition, but after last season in beating UCLA and Oregon State, regional PAC 10/12, MWC, and WAC teams want no part of the GRIZ.

(7) GRIZ bigs are progressing nicely in the offseason, and the loss of Qvale will not be as bad as the loss of Strait was. The biggest concern with our bigs is the defensive impact and intimidation factor.

(8) A few HS coaches mentioned to me how thoroughly they like Tinkle, our staff, and the camp. Every one of them are hoping Montana keeps Tinkle around for a long time, and we are lucky to have him. He is a very highly respected coach in the Western USA.

Anyway, I hope someone expands on this between now and the season starting. I really would appreciate someone taking the time to check out open gyms duing cage camp, and preseason. GO GRIZ!!!

Another thing to add. I did not meet the new assistant, but asked Tinkle about him. Tinkles response was something like this "We got a great one." Not his exact words, but something very similar to that.

Amazingly upbeat time this past weekend for Tinkle. The only negative being the putting together a quality schedule. I am not sure how the schedule will play out, but will not be surprised if it is a little weak. By no fault of Tinkle or O'day. The GRIZ want to take on the best out of conference.

BTW, here are the dates of GRIZ camp. During the evenings during this time anyone can catch some very good open gyms. I hope a few can/will take the time to check out the open gyms and give us updates.

Overnight Camp (Grades 5-12): June 27-30, 2011
Day Camp (Grades K-7): July 18-21, 2011

Thanks grizrule, NBA season has been done for less than 24 hours and I was already jones'n for more, your post was just what I was looking for!

Interesting stuff about the schedule, hopefully they can find a couple big games for us.

also, I second the idea of thoughts on open gyms anyone may see, I love hearing about that stuff.

Was not at the camp but I thought I might add a few things to mtgrizrule post.

The kid from Post Falls Is Marcus Colbert 6-0 (most likely closer to 5-11). I saw him in the 2009-11 season when he teamed with current Bobcat Shawn Reid at Post Falls. Back then I thought he had mid major or higher D-1 potential, and if I remember right he is a coaches son. Like Reid I think he could be a big time sleeper up there in Northern Idaho.

The Huestis rumor has been floating around Missoula (and Bozeman) just as the same rumor about Jos Tinkle has been circulating. I do not have any inside info on what either is thinking about doing, but from what I have heard about both player/students is that they LOVE Stanford. The basketball team(s), the education, the school, and the social atmosphere. I could be 100% wrong but I don't see either transferring ... this year.

Mslacat, thanks for the name. BTW, Colbert's father has been coaching GRIZ camps for several years, and would love for him to be a GRIZ. Colbert is at most 5'9", but does have some hops too, and very solid build to create space in the lane.

As for Huestis, I also don't know what to make of it.

Other teams that had solid players, I know none of their names. Glacier has a nice 6'4" to 6'5" wing that does a little of everything. Mead had another wing with some mad hops, and div 1 game. Kennewick was the most impressive team there. They had a lot of athletes that could run, shoot, and play nasty defense all day. If Kennewick stays healthy, they should be a very good team. They reminded me of the Plains teams from the late 80's and early 90's. Then again there competition is a lot better. They were very fun to watch, and every player could stroke the 3 regularly. If the GRIZ are looking for shooters, this school is full of them. Moscow had a few nice players too. One of the parent's told me that league has a lot of wings that can shoot, and are athletic.

The team camp was great to watch. The most encouraging part of it was hearing so many good things about Tinkle and how this camp is gaining momentum because of the affordability. GRIZ are gaining momentum in the region, and if Deshields does as expected, we may get a pipeline from DC/Baltimore, which would give us a huge recruiting advantage over other regional teams. After hearing what I did of Deshields, and a possible DC/Baltimore pipeline, I will be pulling for this kid hard.

Did anyone go to the Montana-Wyoming All-star game? Any insight on the girls? Seems that the Cat players had nice games, but it seems that the Griz 1st recruit (Vining) from Great Falls didn't play. I see that Griz 2nd recruit Rickman has 9 points and 15 rebounds.

I am giving up on figuring out high school players. I watched Lexie Nelson closely during her senior year and thought she would tear up the Big Sky. Then when she gets to the Lady Griz, she seemed like a fish out of water. Go figure.

I could not make it this year but I did listen to the broadcast and talked with a few people who did.

Vining did not play for CMR this year due to a knee injury so was not eligible for the game.

About player and there transition to college. With some players it is as much about where they go as how talented they are. In my opinion Nelson was not a good fit for the Griz. I think she will have a solid carrier for Eastern Washington.

Rickman had modest stats but I was told really impressed with her hustle up and down the court, she runs the court very well and was Montana's strongest rebounder. She was was diving after losse balls blocking shots and generally played solid defense. I think she is going to a a very good player for the Griz not as flashy as a Sullivan or Hill but a solid big Sky player down the road.

Durham was most likely the best player on the squad. I think she only averaged about 20 mins a game but still managed to lead the squad both nights with 18 point. The book on Durham has been that she is a great scorer but not necessarily a great three point shooter. She surprised many by going 3 for 5 the first night from three and the second night hit 4 three pointers (I don't know how many shots she took). She needs to work on her handling a bit becuase she had her pocket picked quite a few times though, but if she becomes a good three point shooter the Bobcats could have another great Durham in Bozeman.

Daniel Muri had the second best pair of games. She is a very well rounded player can score, play defence and rebound from the guard spot. I think both MSU and UM missed on her.

Jackie Elliot had one of the better all around games. She played REALLY well with Muir and managed to feed her the ball quite a few times for easy buckets. Has a good feel for the game and lets the game come to her. Can score the ball but if teams double her perfect comfortable finding the open player and getting them the ball.

Lady Griz probably had no shot at Dani Muri as her whole family are long time Bobcats. Her brother was the MSU football recruit who had the car / scooter accident a couple of summers ago. The doctors told him it was not in his long term interest to try and play football because of all the injuries he sustained in the accident. Word has it that Ash said that MSU would honor his scholarship which I thought was pretty cool. The Lady Cats are the ones that missed out on Dani.
