GRIZ/STM- 2nd exhibition game thread.

Just back from the game. A few impressions, since MtGrizRule did a great job of capturing game flow...

1. The officials crew -- Big Sky Conf. regulars -- was so dramatically better than Monday night's Big Sky crew that... well, this game was a blast because the refs were in game flow with the players. Great job, Robert Lehigh, Dennis Flannery, and Scott Holland.

2. Major improvement on defense. It wasn't noticeable early, but the Griz steadily wore down St. Martin's. With about 14 minutes left in the 2nd half, St Martin's was gassed. Turnovers started piling up, the Griz hit the gas & blew the game open... if expanding a 20-point lead to 30+ can be called that. Rebound is still spotty, but I saw dramatic improvement in positioning from Chris Kemp, and frosh Fabian Krslovic is also solid, though he had a quiet game.

3. Offensive game flow. I'm used to hearing coaches say, "We have to establish our inside game, which will then open up things on the perimeter." Well, this year's Griz did the opposite tonight, with devastating efficiency. Early in the second half St. Martin's could not stop the outside game (four straight treys by Brandon 3Feller off of feeds from Dunn and Gregory, 5-of-7 from the field -- all treys). Which opened up the inside game, or will. St. Martin's was too gassed to really move to the perimeter, but Montana's inside game tonight showed hints of power as well. Expect some lob & dunk fireworks by mid December.

INDIVIDUALS -- A lot of improvement across the board, but a few impressions.

1. Michael Weisner -- The refs let Weisner play his game and he responded with three smooth treys early. He still got into foul trouble, but played a solid offensive game, strong rebounding game and spidermanish defensive game. He was everywhere.

Was MOST impressed by the confidence and production of Chris Kemp and Riley Bradshaw, however.

3. Chris Kemp is relaxing, not pressing, and finding his game. Wow. He's a force, but not very tall, and not much of a jumper. But he got 2-3 offensive boards and -- When he didn't try any fancy dunk moves -- had some solid offensive production. Six-of-7 shooting from inside the paint, 15 points. Four rebounds. His rebounding positioning was very good. His best-ever game as a Griz.

4. My "Most-improved" honors go to Riley Bradshaw. He also played relaxed, and as the game progressed, he became more confident. Then, dazzlingly effective. Point guard is in good hands this year. Bradshaw truly lived up to last year's expectations, in grand fashion. There's absolutely no reason why he can't continue on this upward arc, which will be very, very good for Montana. His point production didn't quite match up to his overall floor game, but I feel that will come around soon. Three assists, one steal, 0 turnovers. Drove the lane with quickness and power. Played very well at the two in the first half as well.

5. Lastly, Mario. Flashes of brilliance in all aspects of the game. He shot very well, giving solid evidence he'll keep defenses honest... they won't be able to back off on him to cover other players. It was 2-3 perimeter jumpers from Dunn that catapulted Montana to its early 1st half 20-pt lead. Mario directed Montana's balanced attack: Four of the five starters finished with 15-or 16 points. He had seven assists. Three rebounds. One steal. 16 pts. One turnover. Solid floor game.

6. Lastly, Jack Lopez showed signs of being an imortant bench player. Rebounded well. Defense much improved. He's still a quiet, slightly hesitant player, but seems to be relaxing.

Granted, this was just St. Martin's. But it was fun watching the Griz systematically dismantle them.

DeCuire was more active tonight than the first game. Interesting to note that the Griz are NOT making the transition from defense to offense fast enough for him. He spent quite a bit of time shouting for a much faster transition from defense to offense.

So, now the going gets tough. The Griz have six days to get their Div. 1 game in order. Next Saturday they open the 2014-15 season at Colorado State and three days later visit a tough Boise State Broncos team.

Go Griz.

While the first 2 games were against small school teams, a few areas are looking pretty good compared to prior Griz teams.

1) Ball movement & tempo are better now. It looks like this team really could care less about who has the ball or who scores. It used to be that 30 seconds of the shot clock would be dribbled out by one or two guys at times with previous teams, looking for that one great shot or pass. This team appears to understand that simple ball movement & unselfishness will create that good pass/shot.

2) Related to the first point, inside scoring is better & should improve further. When the defense is forced to move & scramble the inside guys are getting much better shots. Previously they often tried to score when bring well defended because the D wasn't broken down enough. You can already see a difference with Kemp's success compared to last year and Bruenig & Krslovic are great additions.

3) High/Low: it's great to finally see a couple bigs work together setting up and feeding each other. With defenses needing to guard UM's perimeter shooting I'm hoping to see more of this.

4) Rebounding & Defense: Time will tell but for the Griz to out rebound ANY team last year was unusual. It's definitely a step in the right direction that we got 5 more that St Martins last night. The D also looked much improved from the first game with more urgency, help & accountability.

5) Confidence & Depth: It looks clear that many guys are playing relaxed & are able to have success without letting their nerves get the best of them. The two guys that stand out are Bradshaw & Gfeller. I'm sure they improved a lot after learning what they needed to work on after last year. But it's obvious they are playing looser, having fun & aren't worrying about mistakes.

It was great to see so many guys get good minutes. With prior teams, even in blowout games, guys down the bench often didn't get in until the last 3 minutes. I'm thinking we'll probably see 8 to 9 guys get most of the time during the year but Decuire seems to really want to develop a deeper bench.

Tinkle did a great job at UM. His success speaks for itself. I like what Decuire is doing so far with this particular team. However it plays out, I think he's making the right moves for them to be successful.

Flow, athletic play, generally looking closer to a mid season form......Travis letting guys play game, apparently coaching up in practice. Lot more fun to watch than the over coached stop and go of past versions of griz bb.

Ok, still only 2 lower division wins but I think we have potential of bigger things soon. Lot of fun to watch play, more energy and passion for the game!

The test at CSU later this week will tell us a lot more.

How has DeJong been looking so far?

DeJong played 8 solid minutes Saturday, barely missing a set-up play drawn up by coaches during a time out. DeJong was set-up on the left baseline on the Griz offensive end. Bradshaw took the inbounds and drove hard toward the paint but pulled-up quickly and tossed a short lob over a defender and 2-ft plus over the rim. DeJong was the intended recipient of the lob, but was fouled just as he grabbed the ball. He still attempted the slam, but the ball hit the rim hard and bounced off. DeJong the second of two free throws. It was a noteworthy play because the entire Griz bench jumped up as the lob went up. No doubt DeJong's teammates have respect for his leaping ability and were ready to celebrate a score on the play.

The kid has incredible leaping ability and moves very well defensively. Five rebounds in 8 minutes! He has the skills. My guess is he'll get some playing time if he continues to rebound like he did Saturday.

Sounds like he could develop into a great player.

Any chance they'll consider red-shirting him? Or any of the other newcomers?

I understand they plan to do that with Boehning, who sounds like he definitely needs some time to develop....

I believe, the hope is to redshirt both Dejong and Boehning this season. Then again, being pretty thin upfront, that will be difficult.

Breath of fresh air as contrasted with the football forum---course this is just the pre-season and FB is in crunch time... :D

Look out for the basketball thread trolls coming conference tournament time, then a huge increase in them when the GRIZ make the NCAA tournament. :thumb:

It's amazing how bad the GRIZ basketball team is when it comes to a real Big Boys tournament. :thumb:

Interesting, thanks. Sounds like he has terrific potential, and if they can get away with redshirting him, that would be nice. I hate it when they have kids who have great potential but who waste a freshman season because there just isn't enough time to go around.

If I understand this correctly, there is a major difference between Boehning and DeJong.

One has a scholarship; the other is a walk-on. Both will have to prove their worth to the team in practice this year. DeJong might believe he needs to work his way into the playing rotation THIS year and thus forego sitting out.

If I understand this correctly, the decision does not have to be made until the official season starts.

If DeJong does NOT make the trip this weekend, we might be able to assume he's being given redshirt consideration. I like the dynamics of a Montana kid being given the chance to earn his way onto the Griz roster with a redshirt designation. If he stays on the roster, the pressure is on him to prove his worth.

Go Gavin. Go Griz.

Big strong Dutch kid from that historic little enclave of Hollanders at Manhattan, Holland, Amsterdam in the Gallatin Valley. Montana connections are oh-so important to these Montana teams; hope that one works out. The kitties were certainly disturbed at losing him.

I've forgotten DeJong's history. He was set to go to MSU until Huse was fired, wasn't he? Then, what? The new coach didn't seem interested?

Whatever happened, I"m glad he ended up at UM....

DeJong had gotten his leg broken in football, and so didn't play BB his senior year. Huse recruited him anyway based on his soph/junior year performances as a good rebounder, good dunker. I gather he was friends with Huse's boy, and so he was a "backyard pick" that Huse had personal knowledge of. Newly-hired Coach Fish didn't seem to have any idea who he was, and DeJong and another bright prospect kind of got lost in the shuffle as the new coach came on board. Like Huse, Wayne Tinkle had been watching him come up through high school and recruited DeJong, but since he was a little boy, he "wanted to be a Bobcat."

Losing his senior year took him off the radar for all except Huse and Wayne -- one of the benefits of being "deep" in the institutional knowledge of your recruiting base. Wayne had treated DeJong well. When he broke his leg in football and saw his scholarship chances evaporate, Huse and Wayne both called him the next day with welcome words of encouragement, and he remembered that. So when Fish wouldn't give him the time of day, he called Wayne, Wayne gave him the option of a "recruited walk on" and DeJong took it. In the meantime, even though he lost a year of play, he grew another 2-3" and put on another 15 pounds, and even though a potential football recruit, after the broken leg decided he preferred basketball and worked out hard with an "Attack" team (with Huse's son) to get back into it. Huse may have encouraged DeJong to give Wayne a call.
