Griz Spring Game

Given the film that was available on him. Plenty. I find it hilarious how negative some folks on the board are about QB potential this year. Abbott is likely the number two and may be right on his heels. Tommy M did just fine with a system and coach that let him develop. Vidlak doesn’t need to develop. His backups will be just fine with the tools around them. I guess we will have to agree to to disagree. I don’t think there is another drop down coming in through the portal. Mainly because there are so many QB’s already on the roster. Don’t forget that Ah Yat is also on the roster. That makes 5 plus the walk on. I get the sense this staff is going to build a three to four year starter with one of the kids on the roster.
Did we watch the same scrimmage? Not trying to tear the kid down, but I didn't see much out of Abbott to suggest he's even 3rd string, let alone right behind Vidlak. I thought Huott looked better, tbh. His long throw while getting hit that the TE dropped (maybe Barker or Olsen?) was probably the 2nd best throw we saw all day.

As for Brown, I honestly thought he looked the same as always. One really nice throw, but too many check downs and hesitancy.

Sam V is miles ahead of the other 4, at this point. He might be the best pure thrower we've had in a long, long time.

I did watch the same game. He is by far the best runner/scrambler out of the QB’s. Vidlak is no slouch. Abbott adds a different event element than the others. Huott did very well for his time in the system. Brown made some nice throws. Really hard to tell anything given who is playing against the ones and who had the best Oline to work with. Time will tell and I stand by my statements that the QB position is not a problem. I won’t argue that Vidlak throws a great ball and that he is #1. His pocket presence and awareness seem to be what is going to be effective with this system. That might be the biggest knock against Abbott.

I guess I agree here, although Vidlak's scrambling really impressed me, but to me he also looked like the 4th best passer on the team. I don't think his running ability is enough to overcome that.

You may be right. Rotating that many QB’s makes it tough to get a feel for much. I think that is why Vidlak was so impressive. He threw some dimes for his time. Difficult for any of them to really get into a rhythm. Overall a pretty positive day. D line and corners concern me. I hope we some activity from the portal for both positions.

Who looked like 4th best passer?

Abbott. I guess the way I worded it made it sound like Vidlak lol my bad.

I thought KB looked improved. Got the ball out quicker.
Vidlak, wow.
Huot, okay we have something here!
Abbott did a good job for the limited reps he gets in practice

I also thought the walk on (remind me his name) had some flahes of decent plays.

John Kohler, he was 1/4 last night but had a really good pass to Williams that was broken up due to DPI.

I wish Abbott, Huot, and the Kohler guy would of got snaps with the 1s. O Line doesn't have much depth and those guys did pretty well for the offensive line folding like a lawn chair. Kb seems to be the same qb we've known. I hate saying this but, I kinda wish he'd transfer down. He could do a lot for a D2 team but, the fcs isn't where he belongs. I used to have high hopes for him but, he's let me down every time.
Perhaps he is there because he wants to be a Griz and is ok being a backup. Or maybe it is a education or proximity to family decision. To worry about what a 21 year old is doing is probably not something anyone should invest a lot of energy into. Let the kid play football where and how he wants and let the coaches manage their team.

Question: Before 3/16, how many passes had you seen Vidlak throw? And Question #2: When was the last time we went through an entire season with the starting QB healthy?

Yes, my issue is with who’s BEHIND Vidlak. Thus why I also stated sometime in the last month (maybe in the CJ Jordan thread on the other side) that if HE were to sign, I’d have zero concerns about the QB position going forward.

Given the film that was available on him. Plenty. I find it hilarious how negative some folks on the board are about QB potential this year. Vidlak will be the three year starter. IMHO there’s not another QB on this roster that will start, unless it’s in an emergency. Certainly not multiple years. So if you’re talking about someone BESIDES Vidlak, I’ll take that bet for any amount you’re willing to wager.

And for clarification, it’s not that I don’t think there’s any QB that has the talent, I still have seen nothing that would lead anyone to believe this staff has the ability (or the desire) to develop a 3-4 year starter in house. This is year 6 and they’ve not done it yet.

Nice article, many thanks. Didn't realize the McGourin injury, that sucks. Good that we've got a couple new good looking DEs.

I would absolutely love situational change of pace with Abbot. Him running the plus 1 and being able to pass would be a nightmare for opposing Ds. Rollouts, RPO, and QB keepers kind of negate the need for pocket presence. If this line can run block well, then he could be interesting.

From watching the scrimmage, Vidlak is damned impressive. I’m excited for the offense. I’m less excited about the D. Ugh to that. But it’s hard to tell in a scrimmage.

And Hoops, if the line performs as well as you think or as well as Hauck is saying, I will retract all my previous posts about it and freely admit you are right. I’ll buy you a beer if I ever make it to the Mo Club!

I'm pretty sure that at least 5 starters did not play on Defense including Gubner and some other D line man . The defense will be good again.

Funny as hell people saying that Vidlak is the next Tom Brady when he didn't face a defense. Abbott will be the starter by game 2.

I’m sure you, the biggest Bobcat troll here, would put up 5k to back that up too? Where are you and MTHoops at on your initial 5k bet? You still trying hard to back out of that one ?
