Griz Spring Game

I wish Abbott, Huot, and the Kohler guy would of got snaps with the 1s. O Line doesn't have much depth and those guys did pretty well for the offensive line folding like a lawn chair. Kb seems to be the same qb we've known. I hate saying this but, I kinda wish he'd transfer down. He could do a lot for a D2 team but, the fcs isn't where he belongs. I used to have high hopes for him but, he's let me down every time.

I’m guessing we’ll bring in a transfer
There looked to be an enormous gap in poise and ability between Vidlak and the other guys, so probably not a bad idea.

Vidlak gonna be a special QB here. I’ve said it for a long time. He will be an all Conf QB, for maybe multiple years.

Don’t tell AZ that. He doesn’t think so.

You talking about a different AZ? Please show where I’ve said that. My concern isn’t Vidlak, it’s who comes AFTER Vidlak.

I honestly think we'd be OK without bringing in a transfer but, it would be nice to get someone more game ready. I think Huot and Abbott could be viable backups. Split reps with those 2 if Vidllak goes down. Huot seems to be a better passer, Abbott has got the legs.

Wasn't Fontes talking up Kris in the interview? I assume he was talking about Kris Brown.

Just from memory of listening to the videos, here are some of what I heard. Maybe others can correct and supplement.

Hauck - All of the transfers can help us. The new guys can help us.

- Harris is a big athletic guy. Ramos is way better than he was a month ago.

- Linebackers were good from A - Z. Liked the young lb's too.

- QB's needed to get hit, so they can learn the speed of the rush. Some don't have much experience in that.

- Fun to see young guys make plays.

- Didn't watch the qb's; watched the front. Will look at qb's on tape.

- Forbes and Grimsrud did nice jobs. Also Dries, I think he said. He was positive about some of the guys who played o-line with 2's, and said they had sometimes played with 1's in practice.

- TE's did nice job, especially Barker

- Fontes was good

- Weren't very physical the first couple drives.

- No injuries during scrimmage.

Fontes - I thought he said a couple positive things about Kris Brown.

- spread the ball out and spread the field more to help the run game, excited for new things in the offense, more versatile

I tried to watch the scrimmage without thinking about past years. From what I saw tonight, I would say:
1. Vidlak
2. Brown ( There is talk about lack of progress despite number of years in the program, but 2 of those years were covid years without much game experience. Watch the film tonight. He looked more comfortable and actually looked downfield instead of checking down. Especially in the second half. )
3a and b. Huot/Abbott. Huot has a Bernie Kosar sidearm delivery, and Abbott is pretty quick to run. Young guys who have a year to grow.
Kolar. Know nothing about him.

If Jordan shows up, this offense could find another gear.

Every team needs quarterback depth. We talk about Griz QB injuries, but most every team in the nation has to see what their second string quarterback can do at some time during the year.

Thursday, March 16th at 10:31. You posted three laughing emojis when I posted there would be no issues at QB. You didn’t say you were worried about who came behind Vidlak at that time. Seems like you are now clarifying. I am not worried about who is behind him. It is really early and two of the other QB’s have promise with more reps and learning the system. Especially given the running back and receiver depth, an oline that is vastly improved and a different coaching philosophy. Spring game doesn’t reveal much. Three areas that were positives in my eyes, running game, QB play and there were several screens plays!!

If no other QB is brought in you KNOW who’s getting 2nd team reps. And it rhymes with “this town”.

Question: Before 3/16, how many passes had you seen Vidlak throw? And Question #2: When was the last time we went through an entire season with the starting QB healthy?

Yes, my issue is with who’s BEHIND Vidlak. Thus why I also stated sometime in the last month (maybe in the CJ Jordan thread on the other side) that if HE were to sign, I’d have zero concerns about the QB position going forward.

I am REALLY liking Aaron Fontes as a person. Kid has a great personality and a 1,000 watt smile.

Also, looks/sounds like there’s great camaraderie on this team.

I agree. I thought Vidlak separated himself from the group and then Brown was next.
If we sign another QB, (CJ Jordan) we will be in good shape heading into fall.
Go Griz!

Given the film that was available on him. Plenty. I find it hilarious how negative some folks on the board are about QB potential this year. Abbott is likely the number two and may be right on his heels. Tommy M did just fine with a system and coach that let him develop. Vidlak doesn’t need to develop. His backups will be just fine with the tools around them. I guess we will have to agree to to disagree. I don’t think there is another drop down coming in through the portal. Mainly because there are so many QB’s already on the roster. Don’t forget that Ah Yat is also on the roster. That makes 5 plus the walk on. I get the sense this staff is going to build a three to four year starter with one of the kids on the roster.

Did we watch the same scrimmage? Not trying to tear the kid down, but I didn't see much out of Abbott to suggest he's even 3rd string, let alone right behind Vidlak. I thought Huott looked better, tbh. His long throw while getting hit that the TE dropped (maybe Barker or Olsen?) was probably the 2nd best throw we saw all day.

As for Brown, I honestly thought he looked the same as always. One really nice throw, but too many check downs and hesitancy.

Sam V is miles ahead of the other 4, at this point. He might be the best pure thrower we've had in a long, long time.
