Lasisi signs with Montana
Sheridan College head basketball coach Steve Smiley has announced that shooting guard Idris Lasisi has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Montana in 2010-2011.

Lasisi, a 6’2, 195-pound shooting guard from Leuven, Belgium averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists as a freshman for the Generals this year. Lasisi started the last 11 games of the season and helped lead the Generals to a 27-7 record and an appearance in the Region IX Championship game. Lasisi shot 49% from the field and 43% from behind the three point line, knocking down 66 of 153 attempts. One of the best defenders in Region IX this past year Lasisi continually had the assignment of guarding the opposing teams best player, for his efforts Idris was named 1st team All-Defense for Region IX. Along with his standout performances on the court Lasisi was also named Academic All-Region for maintaining a 3.4 cumulative GPA throughout the year.

Lasisi is the third Sheridan College player this year to sign at a Division 1 school. He joins teammates JR Cadot (TCU), and Antoine Proctor (Sacramento State) as Generals moving on to the next level for 2010.

This puts UM at 14 scholarships, one over the allowable limit. Is a current player leaving? Did one of this year's signees not pass the clearing house?

I am told the Griz signed Lasisi about 2-3 weeks ago have not announced anything yet, which I find interesting. It could be that they are still waiting for NCAA clearinghouse info. Lasisi is a foreign (Belgium) player and a late qualifier with three years of eligibility all of which makes things a little complicated.

Still though the total is 14 and you are only allowed 13. The fact that the Griz signed 3 JC shooting guards and that their best high school recruits are also shooting guards points a shooting guard will be leaving.

I am relieved to see we have a proven shooter. I hope he does the same with the GRIZ. We already know Michael Taylor is leaving. Who else? I pray it is not any of the Freshman or Cherry. Stockton is the only one I can think of.

Also, anyone know if the Carroll guard is walking on or not?

I would think that the Griz would have signed a JC point if Stockton was not returning. With out Stockton the Griz would have only Will Cherry and possibly true freshman Vaughn Autry who could play the point. That would be rather thin. My thoughts are possibly Rasson Young, but that is a pure guess.
 
I wanna read a story about Cherry shooting 1,000 balls a day with a guru.
Stockton plays too well with Selvig and was involved in lots of points off of time outs last year. I think he may be ok with a role as he does make an impact when he comes in.

Wood also played point at the JC level although I read that he was forced into that role due to his JC team not having much else in the way of point guards. It is hard for me to imagine Stockton seeing the floor much with Cherry and Autry on the team. I also think Young has a lot more to offer than Stockton.

I'd LOVE to read a story like that as well. But is Cherry, is any Griz, willing to put in that kind of work/commitment? Some athletes are a lot of talk, some are more action. I don't know any of our players personalities/work ethic, but I know if I was in their shoes you better believe I'd be working my f'n ass off. I hope we have players with that kind of attitude??? GO GRIZ! Build on your NCAA appearance.
 
just watched a couple minutes of the video, and one comparison leaps to mind:Cam Rundles. He looks JUST like him. His jump-shot looks exactly like Cam, his dribble-drive stutter, his pump-fake, even the way he stuts back downcourt after drilling a 3,everything....just can't get over how similar they look in every regard.

Rundles had a rough ending (his play) for Wofford in last years NCAA tournament...that was hard to watch...was pulling for him/his team.
 
Back to the theme of this thread...

This transfer shooting guard looks like a good pick-up for the Griz. He shoots from 3 with great accuracy as it stands already, and looks good in other areas as well--with time to improve in all areas as he'll have 3 years of eligibility left still. Good move by the staff.
 
Are there signs that Tinkle is going away from the big man philosophy...looks like we are really recruiting hard to be able to go small and fast, well, smaller anyway.
 
I wouldn't necessarily agree with that, stubbins. Good defense seems to be a developing theme, which is great, but I don't necessarily see that size trend just from this class.

We lost 3 good guards, a wing, and 2 undersized PF's: Johnson, Taylor, Staudacher, Young, Banny, McGillis.

We added 3 guards, 2 wings, an undersized PF and a full-sized PF: Autry, Snow, Lasisi, Steward, Jamar, Weisner, and Reader.

With the twin towers together for one more season and a pretty good 6'9'' guy coming off a redshirt, Hutchison, they probably didn't think they needed more than one big man in this class.
 
i believe there was a defining moment for tinks as a head coach at montana: december 20, 2008. on the night a rare snowstorm pretty much shut down portland, portland state absolutely humiliated us on their homecourt. they were faster, quicker, outleaped us, outhustled us, contested every shot, won the scramble for every loose ball. we played like a bunch of couch potatoes. i think we were down 20 after about ten minutes--and it wasn't that close. i just looked at my brother and a few of our friends and shrugged my shoulders. they knew i was a big griz fan; there wasn't a peep out of any of them.

it took me days to get out of portland, and i think our team was stuck there too. not a game you could quickly forget or put behind you since portland's weather continued the torment. and i'm sure during this awful period when they were lobby-hanging and didn't know when they'd get back home, one of the coaches said, ah...this ain't workin'. we need better athletes.

BIG DIFFERENCE....this kid isn't a head case like Rundles was.
