GRIZ scrimmage

Dang, I was actually ready to spend money on Go Griz tonight to watch scrimmage. Wow, could any of you imagine that they wouldn't have it?? No Surprise here. Not only does the Big Sky suck, but so does our behind the times thinking, and technology. Hope Haslam reads this crap?? Its 2016! DAMN

My quick notes. Sprry its a mess i did it on my phone.
Wright: plays very well at high speeds, multiple nice assists under heavy duress or pressure
Rorie: scores at all 3 levels, vocal, explosive athlete,  everything we hoped he would be
Pridgett: major, major potential, I like the Kareem comparison (much better athlete though not quite as skilled at the same stage imo)
Samuelson: nose for ball, soft touch, plays hard all the time, a little undersized and not real explosive but knows where to be and when to be there
Lopez: solid in every phase, invaluable player imo
Dejong: really nice block from behind on an akoh layup
Moorehead: no hesitation as a shooter, going to score a lot for us the next 3 years
Krslovic: tough, intelligent kid, no touch inside
Akoh: thick, strong kid, they got him the ball in some really good spots,
Dunn: tough 3 to beat shot clock, looked very comfortable (not shocking) in control, seemed to know when he needed to shoot/pass/attack
Gfeller: we know what he is
Dorsey: played mostly as a wing I know DeCuire has said this repeatedly but it still surprises me
Spoja: more athletic than I expected
Misipeka-ward: tough, physical player, plays much bigger than his size, productive,

Team: warm-up dunk session was impressive, spoja with a sweet windmill, surprising number of good looks in a scrimmage, good offense or bad defense?

Good summary, will add some. I felt the defenders did a great job fighting through screens and clogging the passing lanes. I feel the open shots were more of over aggressive defense and/or a few mental breakdowns. This team is far from knowing one another and being in sync. That is common at this stage of any season. As a whole, the main contributors shot FT's well (especially Dunn and Rorie, Pridgett nailed his 2 FT's in the clutch too).

Speaking of shooting, Rorie, Moorehead, and Dunn have all much quicker releases this season. They get the ball up quickly. Dunn, really impressed me with his improvement since last season. Spoja is much more athletic than I remember. He played great defense. We sure could use Akoh and Dorsey this season. Dorsey was stroking the 3 in pregame warm ups. He did not do as much in the scrimmage. Akoh floating baseline jumper was absolutely pure. Krslovic needs to relax when he gets the ball. His rebounding and defense were very good.

Pridgett struggled statistically. He makes the game look easy at both ends of the courts, because of how fluid and effortless he moves. I look at how well a player moves more than the results early in the season. Jamar comparison is good. However, he is more athletic and a better defender than Jamar was at the same stage. Pridgett will be a great one.

I spoke with Oguine after the scrimmage. He said the hand will be fine. He will only be out a few weeks. I also met Alphonso Anderson. That kid is big and strong. Looks like a Tight End or Defensive End. I don't recall any GRIZ true Freshman look as physically imposing as he does, that includes football players. He looks bigger than 215 lbs. He is all muscle though. It will be interesting to see how his game develops.

The depth and athleticism of this team is impressive. They really need to work on continuity on both ends of the court. I hope this group gels quickly. Being without Oguine and Anderson will hurt this unit early. Upon their return, this team should improve a lot. Great to watch some GRIZ basketball.

Just a couple add-ons to the great posts by MTtarheel & MTGrizRule...
• Incredible pull-up & step-back jumpers by Rorie. He will stretch defenses, particularly at the tip of the key.
• Very impressed with Samuelson's poise, post-ups and rebounding position. Very strong kid with good hops. Always ready for the entry pass from Rorie & Wright. I think he has the opportunity to log a lot of time in the low blocks.
• Even without Akoh and Dorsey, I feel good about team depth. Misipeka-Ward and Spoja are capable of stepping-in at any time. Both play good defense.
• Jack Lopez is a monster defender and gets to the seams for offensive and defensive boards. Plays about 3 inches taller than his actual 6-5 height.
• Outstanding defensive positioning from Sayeed Pridgett. Had a beautiful steal & breakaway , but had his shot blocked by Jack Lopez.
• Walter handling the ball in traffic better than last year (if that's possible).
• and yes, Bobby Morehead has a quicker release this year.
• Brandon Gfeller playing with better balance and physical strength. Hope he has a good year.
• But I was most impressed with the return -- in full form -- of Mario Dunn. Outstanding poise and vision with the ball, nailed 2-3 tough perimeter daggers, and an absolute bear on defense.
• My biggest question was at least partially answered. Was worried about front court size and defense, but -- in support of Krslovic -- I feel that Lopez, DeJong and Samuelson have the potential to be premier defenders and rebounders. When Anderson hits the floor, this front court will be a bit undersized, but very capable.

I forgot this. The GRIZ are running way more high post sets, using various players. Some really nice passes made to cutters from the high post

Samuelson, perhaps stronger and more floor savvy than I expected. Wright, a little low energy tonight. DeJong, a couple of nice inside baskets and a nice block. Fab, not as strong tonight as he needs to be under the basket. Pridgett, lots of potential there. Overall, lots of action, LOTS of fast passing. The team has obviously been working on it.

Did anyone catch the name of the recruit sitting behind the bench?

No, but he was pretty big. Looked a little like Timothy Falls. He was too big to be him though.

Weird. I was flying out of Missoula to Cali a couple weeks ago and saw a kid in basketball gear at the airport fitting this exact description. I even remember thinking he looked a lot like Falls, but this guy was 6'6"+. Has to be the same dude.

So now that some of you have got a small taste of this years Griz cagers how do you think they will do in conference? Is this a team that could upset a usc,ole miss, or nc state?

Anyone see the Lady Griz scrimmage?

Yes. It was a decided "first team... i.e. the team with Alycia Sims... v.s. reserves" scrimmage and -- although some players switched teams in the second half -- not very competitive. Because Sims was dominant. Beyond that, I was trying to get an idea who else might be able to fill the hole left by Kayleigh Valley's injury... and could not. I have no idea how this team will fare in conference at this point. I almost think it'll take the full pre-season for this team to forge an identity...given all the factors. I DID conclude that this team has some solid talent, particularly several freshmen, and thus a lot of potential.I thought Mekayla Issak had a quiet game. Otherwise, briefly...

I was impressed with the overall size of this team. Several young forwards will compete for playing time in Valley's absence. If anyone steps up, this could be a solid team. Candidates in my mind: Jace Henderson, Emma Stockholm and Henny Hearn. Because of team size (I guess) it looks like they'll start the season playing zone. I've never been a fan of zone defenses, so that's a vision problem on my part. I thought the zone D in the scrimmage was very, very soft.

Alycia Sims is impressive. It's clear she has the green light to shoot, whether she's in high post or low post. Very poised. But she'll need help. Initially, that will come from some promising young guards, especially (in order) Madi Schoening and Gabi Harrington. Also showing toughness and promise, Taylor Goligolski and McKenzie Johnston.

I was impressed with overall team size and speed. They also battled on the boards very evenly.

More impressed than anything else, I like the team attitude and team play. Very aggressive! Did NOT hesitate shooting the ball! Aggressive driving/ball-handling skills from some guards. This is possibly a mark of coach Schweyen's style of coaching. I like it!

...One would think with most of the print this year ,comments on this site, player ratings ect., that Travis is assembling a team with some Pac 10 quality type players, so I get that maybe we might have the talent to pull it all together to win one of those you mentioned. It will be interesting to see how Coach Decuire does this pre-conference season with a young team that is supposed to have some pretty exceptional Big Sky talent. Can they stay healthy?? Are they Big enough? Will small and quick relate to more rebounds??..offensive rebounds?? Hopefully the Team has what it takes keep these games respectively close and can take something from them into conference play.

OR
Oh yeah... and Zip was my hero as well. My apologies here for misspelling his last name; it's Rhoades. Zip, who lived in Kalispell, recently passed away in early August of this year. There's a fond family memorial to zip where you can see several photos of Zip (striped shorts & all!) along with some action photos and several team photos. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV4Lbtc2MRA

Thanks for sharing that youtube clip on Zip. Regretfully, I did not meet him. I spent time in Kalispell and saw several great ballplayers (Brent Wilson, Sam McCullum, the Zanon brothers, Jeff Epperly, Doug Ellis, etc.) but did not meet or watch Zip.

I agree with your overall assessment, but am puzzled by your description of Issak's game as "quiet". She shot exceptionally well and surprised most of us with 2 3-pointers. She was very active on defense, had steals and several blocked shots.
