Griz Scrimmage Tuesday (10/26) @ 7:00

I think the key for the Griz will be how able Martin and Matthews are to step right in. I like Lynch, but can't believe he would be our number one point guard.

Mathews will be the Number one guard for the first game of the season, mark it down. Lynch will battle Martin for the back-up. Martin, if he can make the transition quick enough and not get redshirted, will be at least the #2 point by conference. It will be a head game for Martin, he has the natural skills to exell in the Big Sky it will come down to figuring out how to use those skills.

I made most of the scrimmage tonight - first I should say that I couldn't evaluate talent if it slapped me in the face, so take my observations with a grain of salt, but not knowing what I am talking about has never stopped me before so...

Chavez was there and played quite a bit. I really hope he makes his grades, he can be a great player.

McKay was listed on the roster but I didn't see him - anyone have any info on this?

Lynch and Martin split most of the time at point, and looked about even to me. Later they played together with Martin at point, so I assume he has an edge at this point. Matthews also played point, and he looked faster and more athletic than either Lynch or Martin, and might be better at breaking the press, although Martin seemed to control the ball better, and had the best defense IMO. Matthews also seemed to be having the most fun.

Dloughy is the most athletic guy on the team, and although he made some mistakes I think he will see a lot of playing time.

Seyfert still seems reluctant to pound inside on offense, although at the end he seemed better.

Hasquet and Strait played well, and both seemed to be willing to play physical. Hasquet surprised me with how well he played vs. what I expected. The only criticism I had of Hasquet is he seemed to stand around a little if he wasn't directly in the play. He also seemed relaxed and having fun out there. I think these 2, with Dloughy, Matthews and Criswell would make a great transition team.

Criswell doesn't seem to be having fun, it seems like he is putting too much pressure on himself. Hope this improves so he can relax and shoot like he did 2 years ago.

Wilkins seemed to struggle all night, and was corrected several times by the coaches, and generally looked out of sorts. Low point for him - he complains about a call with a ref  If he doesn't improve I don't think he will see a lot of playing time.

Rich Stapleton had his own fan club :D he could be a fan favorite as he comes in at the end of games. Even I was hoping he would hit that 3 at the end (airball), and I had never heard of him before tonight.

Most of the players seem very comfortable with the coaches. All I heard from the bench was encouragement, even when the players made a mistake. Easley needs to keep playing after a mistake and not look to the bench so much.

I don't know what to say about Farr - he played a lot, looked athletic, but I found it hard to think of anything good or bad to say. :-?

They need to work on free throws, although they got better as the scrimmage progressed.

Overall I was encouraged, especially with the young players. If Chavez sticks with the team and Seyfert can get more physical they could be pretty good this year. If not, and the Griz can get a true center in the next year I think they will be very good in 2 years.

Some additional scrimmage comments. Martin can flat out shoot the 3. I think Matthews has the edge in terms of defense and penetration. Matthews seemed more at home at the point than at the 2 guard. Farr had a tough night shooting. He made some spectacular passes and had a couple of steals. He is also very athletic as is Mathews. I thought Jon S played pretty well and gave Kamarr problems early on. Kamarr was his steady self inside and had a load of points and rebounds. Hasquet suprised me also. He seemed quite at ease for a true freshman and scored inside as well as hitting a 3. Strait had his moments too, mostly against Easley. Lynch shot the ball well, especially early. Dlouhy may have had the best night of anyone. Based on this one scrimmage, I would not be suprised if he starts. I did not see McKay anywhere. They announced him as being on the team but not at the scrimmage. Nothing was said about any injury. I did notice that Wilkins had one ankle wrapped. I get the impression that Martin will not redshirt. If McKay is not available, then either Strait or Hasquet may have to play this year. Easley had a ton of fouls and without McKay, I think the GRIZ will have to play one of the young forwards. With Dlouhy, Farrr and Criswell, we seem in exellent shape at the 2 and 3 positions.

According to the Missoulian this morning McKay had a class conflict so he couldn't attend, but he has been cleared medically to play.
