Griz Recruiting Strategy

Now, we are beginning to get closer to the truth: the talent level overall of today's Griz team can't be compared to the Griz teams of the past 20 years. There is talk about a lapse in our coaching, however, if the coaches don't have the talent to compete, then they aren't going to be able to win against a higher level of talent.

nice try.... top to bottom, there has not been a team in the last 20 years with better athletes. This is a very athletic team with some great football players. The defensive line has the potential to be the best we've ever had. There are holes here and there, but overall, very, very talented team full of stud athletes.

Coaching is the problem spankster, no matter how hard you try and divert the masses.

@Spanky who's your coaching buddy on the Griz staff? You cant be serious. The talent to compete is obviously there. Hell Stevie Wonder can see the talent we have. IMO it's must that must we find a way to coach-up every player. The program has had great success because the talent level on the field matched the talent on the sidelines with head phones on! It's not about out playing talent thats for sure.

You guys just changed coaching staffs and last years recruiting class is awesome. Its not time to reinvent the wheel. Stick with whats worked for 20 years. Its time to get you're current players comfortable in the new system. Need to be patient. Not panick. You guys still have a phenomenal program. As a Bison fan, the 2009 season we were 3-8. 2 years later were National Champions and we did it by recruiting our traditional areas BETTER and keeping the core together.

With struggling Western regional schools like Washington State, Wyoming, U of Idaho, Colorado, Colorado State, Hawaii, UNLV, New Mexico State and Utah having a total combined record of 12 wins and 59 losses (16.9% winning percentage), it is going to be interesting to see how many of the potential recruits to those schools reconsider that route and turn to Big Sky Conference teams as a more attractive option.
While the faces may change a bit year to year, there have always been losers in the West, just like everywhere else. Where there are winners there are losers. Nothing has really changed. Recruits will still go FBS if the schollie is offered over 90 % of the time like they have always done, rather than settle for small college football.

I feel like Stevie Wonder when I look for talent at safety. This team has some weak spots that are not due solely to coaching.

I would have to agree with you Kem....and that doesn't happen very often. As a respectful opponent for the last 40 years...in particulary in the last twenty years or so, I all ways thought the Griz consistently had 10-12 of the best players in the conference on the field....and the other eleven or so were very close behind...never saw a real weak link anywhere!!! This year.....well....not so much. They have three, maybe four outstanding players....and then the talent level drops off drastically....and I'm not so sure that when the younger players mature the team will get measureably better!!! Sorry....but that's kind of how I see it and I'm not talking smack either....just an honest appraisal.

Griz needed lights, plus they had to have them per the conference agreement with ROOT sports contract, is that right? So, now they must upgrade facilities: locker rooms and weight rooms especially.

If the program is winning, most recruits will put up with crappy locker rooms/weight rooms, because of the stadium, fans, electric atomosphere, etc. , make the sale. But when the wins don't come as easily, the other stuff matters alot.

I thought there was a fund raising campaign underway for the facilities upgrade for next year, did I just want it so bad I imagined it, or is that happening?

Recruiting? Recruiting is not a problem. We have the best damn frosh class I can remember. We will be fine bringing in new players from high school this coming year. Perhaps it won't rival this year's frosh class but I think we have a good bunch in our sites!

Coaching has had the shakes this season. Reason is they are all brand new at their new positions. Give this coaching outfit next season and we will see a big change. Delaney is a bit over his head. But he may be with us again. I think we are moving along quite well considering we lost our head coach and have all new men in important coaching spots. Actually when you think of it we are doing damn well and I do not see a drop off in recruiting!

Guess we have different definitions of "damn well."
