Griz putting the student in student-athlete

The Academic Center is paying off as the Griz Athletic Department just set new UM records for GPA. Five Griz players posted perfect 4.0 and although I don't know the names of all of them I do know the name of one of them....#14 RS-Sophomore Safety Michael McGinnis. All of us in Sidney are proud of Michael's performance on and off the field and are looking forward to the next three seasons watching Michael and all his team mates. GO GRIZ!

Why did it take Hauck and new coaches to get this out of Stitt recruits? Yet another reason for the need for a coaching change. Ha.

I would venture a simple answer.

I liked Stitt as an individual, and do think he had/has some coaching ability. But his many years at Colorado Mines instilled some expectations that hampered him when he moved to UM. At Mines, every one of his athletes was focused on his education. They had to work their a***s off just to keep up in the classroom. And they knew it, so Stitt probably never had to make any effort on that score.

This thread proves that some of the Griz (including Stitt's recruits) have the classroom ability ... they just needed some encouragement to put in the time and effort. They probably never got that from Stitt because he didn't realize it was necessary.

You may be correct. I have no clue on this one. My original comment was just intended as.a (bad) joke. CDA, where are you?

I was in a dorm at Mines once. On the bulletin board there was a sign that said "Trigonometry study group meets Friday's at 9:00 pm." They get a different sort of student there.

This is something to be promoted. Being a student athlete isn't easy. Speaks loudly on the quality of athletes that we have.

Football team GPA: 3.07
Overall athletics GPA: 3.19
Men's Tennis GPA: 3.75
Those numbers as a whole are pretty impressive.
They are. And (if memory serves) they are also somewhat better than the numbers for the student body at large. Anybody have that number close at hand?

I spoke with a former Griz that was visiting Coach Hauck at his office this summer. He said there were three or four players in the office and asked Coach why they were there.
Coach Hauck told him those players were having troubles doing their homework so he had them do it in his office.
Good job Coach!
