GRIZ/PSU rewind

I decided to watch the GRIZ/PSU game again on Bigskytv. I wanted to pay more attention to some of the things Wayne has been getting at the last few weeks on defense.

Defensive possession/defense type/outcome
1- 2/3 zone/ PSU air balls a forced 3 from about 25 feet out- (great defense).
2- 2/3 zone/ PSU another 25 foot 3 from the top the key good, Deshields only got 1 arm up about 1/2 way. Fully extended that shot is contested. (Good team defense, minor mistake Deshields)
3- Fast break for PSU 3 on 3, Deshields forces Douglas into a shot, Jamar contests it 100%, Shot caroms of the top of the backboard, and by miracle goes in. (great transition Defense).
4- 2/3 zone, PSU with a quick open 3 missed from the elbow, Weisner got there late and arms did not go up until the ball was released (bad defense from Weisner) we got the rebound.
5- 2/3 zone, Douglas splits Gregory and Deshields, Hutchison contests (break down by Deshields and or Gregory-below average defense).
6- PSU fastbreak, Jamar and Hutchison the only ones back Hutch fouled the shooter to the hoop. Good foul, bad team transition defense. (both of Hutch's fouls have been from leaning into the shooter instead of going straight up or simply getting a hand in the face.)
7-2-/3 zone, PSU high post drives on Kemp. Kemp whistled for a foul, which was not a foul (Good D by Kemp), PSU hits an open baseline 3, Kemp was late and not a factor (Kemp's bad)
8- 2/3, GRIZ play great Defense for all but the end of the shot clock, Winston gets inside, Kemp stands there and did not contest the shot much. (Kemp's mistake).
9- 2/3 Douglas misses a baseline 3, Kemp late getting there but got his hands up enough to cause the miss, GRIZ D rebound, Good team defense with a contested shot.
10-2/3 PSU drives right, Dunn called for a nitpicky handcheck (bad call), Douglas then beat Deshields area in the zone for an uncontested made 16 foot jumper (Deshield's mistake).
11- Man D, Douglas takes Deshields left and bricks off the glass, D reb (solid defense)
12-2/3 Douglas draws a questionable blocking call on Deshields (good defense), Winston beats Martin badly for a baseline uncontested lay in (Bad Defense-Martin).
13-2/3, Deshields with strip steal at the high post. Great defense.
14- 2/3 Wiggins long contested by Dunn 22 foot 3 Griz rebound, Great defense.
15 Jamar called for a nit picky foul at the FT line as the defense was setting up,2/3 Zone, Deshields called for handcheck foul (solid call), 2 made FTs, (Deshield's break down)
16- 2/3 Douglas beats Kareem from the elbow, Martin with great help defense just to be called for a foul for flailing his arms on the shot, good call (Martin with a stupid foul), Good team defense though. PSU goes 1 of 2 from the FT line.
17- 2/3 , Winston with an open 20 foot jumper good, Gfeller mistake. Bad Defense.
18-2/3, Wiggins left open on the low block, Weisner late getting there, shooting foul, 1 of 2, Weisner break down.
19- 2/3, PSU turned down a few open looks then makes a stupid forced pass. More of a PSU blunder than GRIZ Defense.
20- PSU attacks low block in transition, Dunn with a terrific help strip. Great defense.
21-PSU attacks the paint, Dunn forced his man to force up a shot, looked like traveling to me, Ref bails PSU out with a questionable shooting foul against Weisner. 2FT's.
22- 2/3 Douglas makes an open baseline 3, Weisner late to his assignment. Bad D Weisner.
23-2/3, Bradshaw with a great anticipation steal sagging back into the middle. Great Defense.
24- 2/3 Hall makes a baseline 3, Weisner just a little late, Average D from Weisner.
25- 2/3 Gfeller with a nice strip on the baseline. Great D
26- Man, TImms of PSU forces the dribble baseline and forced out of bounds. Great man D.
27- Douglas drives to the lane and throws up and misses a last second shot. Won't count that is a defensive series to judge.

1st half 26 defensive possessions. 13 of 26 were either bad defense, or individual errors/mistakes/breakdowns. Wayne cannot be happy with that.

2nd half:

1- 2/3, Richardson beats Hutch just to mess it up with a pathetic shot. GRIZ Rebound, PSU mistake, bad defense.
2- 2/3 Douglas with a semi open elbow 3 missed, Deshields late and not much effect on the shot,GRIZ D REB, bad defense.
3- 2/3 Douglas wide open 3 missed from the elbow, Both Kareem and Keron let that be open. GRIZ Def Reb, bad defense.
4- 2/3, Marcus Hall split Weisner and Hutch between the baseline and wing, blows a lay in, gets the rebound gets hacked. FT's, bad defense.
5- 2/3, PSU with a carry at the end of the shot clock, solid defense.
6- Deshields with a steal in transition defense, great defense.
7- 2/3 Kemp and Jamar trap baseline force a terrible pass by PSU for an over and back. Great Defense.
8-2/3 Douglas misses a FT line jumper, Griz Rebound, Solid Defense other than a GRIZ getting pump faked.
9- 2/3 Wiggins makes a top of key 3, Dunn just a little late, Dunn let down.
10- 2/3 PSU semi open 3 from the wing, Dunn a little late but got his arms up. ORB PSU then throw it away, Steal Deshields for a lay in. Will give the GRIZ a good not great effort there.
11- 2/3 Winston missed open baseline 3, Gregory late, GRIZ DEF REB, Bad Defense
12- 2/3 Hall forces a shot in the paint. Kemp with a block on help defense. Great Defense
13- PSU throws it away in transition, good hustle defense.
14- 2/3, Dunn blocks what looked to be a semi open 3 from the wing. Great Defense, Dunn is likely the only GRIZ that could recover from that. He got there really quick.
15- 2/3 Martin fouls Gengler the FR, no reason to even try that foul. Martin mistake. Back to 2/3 Winston hit and open 23 footer. Deshields was late. Bad Defense.
16- Man, Wiggins missed forced 3 from the to. Hoop and harm for Jamar. Great D from Jamar
17- 2-3 PSU with a force baseline 3, GRIZ DEB Reb, good defense
18- 2/3 Hall with a wide open 3, Dunn over played, Gregory too late, BAD Defense.
19. 2/3 Richardson gets the ball in the middle, not defended well,, Kemp foul 2fts, bad d
20-2/3 PSU missed baseline 3, good hustle and arms up by Kemp but there late. Forced the Air ball from getting his arms up, good hustle and good Defense, GRIZ REB
21- Man to man, Winston takes Gregory to the hole pump fakes him, 2 points, bad defense
22. 2/3 Hall hits a baseline
23, Jamar very late and little effort. Bad Defense.
23-Man to man, Douglas with 3 from the top, miscommunication on the 3 between Dunn and Kemp, bad defense.
24- Weisner fouling PSU on the defensive rebound, won't count it as a defensive series.
25- 2/3 Dunn blocks another wing 3 out of bounds, great hustle and defense, Douglas goes back door from the top the key, somewhat contested floater. Call that an even series. Great shot, great pass, great execution by PSU the GRIZ Defense.
26-Man to man, Dunn block's the last shot in OT, Great Defense.

2nd half regulation: 12 were either bad defense, or individual errors/mistakes/breakdowns. Again not a good percentage.

I may break down OT later. Tired of breaking this game down. In regulation nearly 50% of the time the GRIZ had some sort of Defensive mistake. Wayne is more right than I thought, based on that game. Very unlike the GRIZ!

holy sh**, rule. You have to much time on your hands. You should have went to the Creighton/ butler game tonight. Dougie Mcbuckets was unbelievable in the first half tonight!

I am on pain medications, DR orders to stay home. Put me on meds for a pinched nerve. Thank God, that is all he found. I thought I tore my rotator. I am a GRIZ fan 1st anyway, and love breaking down games. I can see why Wayne is not happy, I thought he was using coach speak and maybe overdoing it. He is actually probably taming down his comments. It would be interesting to break the other games down.

I think one of the veterans he was referring to was Weisner. Jamar actually made very few defensive mistakes. Deshields made a few more than I thought as well. Dunn is lucky he is quick, because he made a few mistakes out there, but has the quicks to make up for his mistakes. That guy is quicker than Cherry. He does not have Cherry's ability to anticipate though. What Cherry had there cannot be coached. PG is in good hands for the next 3.5 years.

I can see why Wayne gets frustrated with Kemp, he made a lot of mistakes for the minutes he was out there. Offensively as well as defense. I still would see Kemp through those mistakes though. Offense was not as bad as I thought, other than the slow down stuff. Just a lot of good shots that did not find the basket like they should. Kareem missed a handful of shots he normally makes. Deshields missed a few. Gfeller and Weisner missed very good looks from 3. That is part of the game, hard to put this one on the offense. For the most part they ran the offense well. Slowing it down did hurt us though. I really am not that worried about the offense. It is a matter of time before those shots fall again.

Defensively, I 100% see why Wayne is upset. The team makes minor errors too often, which costs them dearly. At least against PSU it did. Quick ball movement is the key to beating the GRIZ defense.

Thanks for breaking that down. Good read......and frustrating.

I did not want to add the overtimes to it. Regulation was frustrating. I cannot imagine how much more frustrating it is for the coaches to know and see these things. Wayne has admitted he is not big on game video. This game would be a perfect game to learn from. So many minor break downs and mistakes. A couple obvious painful ones that are easy to spot during the game. During the live game, I honestly did not think the Defense was bad.

After hearing Wayne comment many times over how the team is off, people are letting down, things are not together, etc, I had to get an idea where he was coming from. He really was not exaggerating things at all. He was very accurate in his comments. I am glad I watched that game again. I feel we all have have been too hard on Jamar. Granted he missed some shots he normally makes, and struggled in the second half. Defensively he was only part of 1 mistake, if memory serves me correctly.

Weisner made a lot of defensive mistakes that game. Kemp a few too many for his minutes. Ditto Martin, and even Deshields. I had to be a real stickler and unbiased to find the mistakes, breakdowns, and errors I did to realize Wayne is right.

Here is to hoping the mistakes are minimized in both games this week. GO GRIZ!!!

Thanks for re-watching that game and giving your analysis on the plays mtgrizrule. Watching it once was frustrating enough...watching it a 2nd time would have many Griz fans wanting to break something :P

One thing Tinkle mentioned in either a post game or pre game (I forget which) earlier this year was that there were communication issues on defense with players sometimes not even in the right defense (that was a few games ago though) AND that there are some trust issues. By trust issues he meant some players not trusting their teammates to basically do their job on defense.

I wonder if some of those trust issues are leading to some of the defensive breakdowns by our more veteran players, which we didn't seem to have so often in previous years. Maybe it is causing them to do a bit more peeking to try to help out, and then they get burned themselves instead.

Just a theory.

Anyway, the numbers don't lie either, this year's team is struggling on defense which has been something the Griz were very good at the past few years. In fact it led to us being able to push the ball and run on teams often during games because of good defense.

This Year so far in conference:
Scoring Defense: #8 - 73.2
FG% Defense: #8 - 49.5%
3PT FG% Defense: #6 - 38.0%

2012-2013 in conference:
Scoring Defense: #2 - 63.0
FG% Defense: #4 - 43.0%
3PT FG% Defense: #3 - 32.6%

2011-2012 in conference:
Scoring Defense: #1 - 58.4
FG% Defense: #1 - 37.7%
3PT FG% Defense: #1 - 30.6%

2010-2011 in conference:
Scoring Defense: #1 - 60.7
FG% Defense: #3 - 40.2%
3PT FG% Defense: #1 - 32.4%

2009-2010 in conference:
Scoring Defense: #1 - 63.5
FG% Defense: #2 - 42.8%
3PT FG% Defense: #5 - 36.9%

What's also a bit concerning is that our FG% and 3pt% on offense has been dropping lately too. Wouldn't expect that to drop in conference but actually get better since level of competition goes down a bit.

We're at #8 in the Big Sky for FG% with 46.1% (The above 4 years we were between 48% and 49% always near the top of the conference). For 3pt% we are down to 36.5% (#9 in conference). So some of the things that we could use to make up for our defensive struggles and rebounding struggles have started to fade a bit.

Having a few of our top shooters really struggling in conference sure isn't helping either. Compare the percentages from our non-conference games and the conference games of the following 3 players.

Non-Conference Only Games:
Jamar: 56-111 (50.5%) & 16-42 from 3 (38.1%)
Weisner: 21-42 (50%) & 12-27 from 3 (44.4%)
Gfeller: 17-36 (47.2%) & 14-32 from 3 (43.8%)

Conference Only Games:
Jamar: 22-51 (43.1%) & 4-16 from 3 (25.0%)
Weisner: 9-24 (37.5%) & 3-11 from 3 (27.3%)
Gfeller: 1-10 (10.0%) & 0-6 from 3 (0%)

I don't mean this as smack towards any of the three btw, just pointing out that they are in a bit of a slump, especially from 3. Really hope they come out of it soon!
