GRIZ/Portland

Bad loss to a poor team that has been blasted by other Big Sky teams. Griz execution down the stretch (a turnover fest) sounded awful. It's hard to know what to think since I only listened to the radio. It does seem that Dlouhy (zero points) does not play nearly as well at the 2 position (where he started). We really only have one truly consistent player (Strait). I think we are in trouble heading into conference play. :crybaby:

Portland is not good, but Cooper didn't play against the other BSC schools either. Not having Ellis was huge. Griz only had 11 turnovers and Rundles had 5. Strait has got to improve his free throw shooting. He is starting to resemble Shaq from the line. If I was the opposing Coach i woul dkeep fouling him. He is deadly from the field but with no one on him at the damn FTR line he can't make one. Dlouhy is not consistent. There is a reason the Griz are 220 on RPI.

Brian Ellis is out because of "a team deal". Sounds to me that there are some internal issues. That might explain some of the consistency issues.

No outside shooting again (less than 23% from 3 point) and we got out rebounded by nine. The technical at the end for calling a timeout when we did not have one did not help either. Even with that we still had a chance at the end.

The Tinkle talked it did not sound like Ellis was out for grades but who knows, said it was a "team issue".

Internal problems (which results in a missing key player) and a poor job against a poor team-not an ideal way to go into league. Wayne sounded pretty discouraged on the post game show. I can see why.

It sounds to me like they have some "chemistry" issues. You coul dkind of read a little between the lines. That is as discouraged as i have ever heard Tinks. Well, maybe this will motivate some of these people to see that they need to forget the individual stuff and play as a team.

While I'm not giving up on the season yet, just more proof that you need to enjoy seasons like last year...they just don't happen every year (even in football)

Well said! The Griz fan is so spoiled. It is too bad we can't send a few of them to Sac or Idaho State for a season.

Had to wait before posting on this game. I am so disappointed and frustrated in this loss. Not really sure what to say about this game, not many positives. We missed Ellis for ball handling. I just hope all is okay with Ellis. I doubt if it is grades, and he seems to be a good kid, so hard to imagine him causing many problems. I wonder if he is having family issues or going through tough times away from the court. Wayne sounded very frustrated on post game interview.

GB1 is right, Strait is our only consistent player. Rest of them are up and down. Wayne commented every game 2 players we depend on always have off game, and it is different players every game. I do think though Martin is very comfortable filling the 6th man role. Chavez got his chance tonight and disappointed. Dloughy, 0 pts, huh. Dloughy, you are the SR, show the leadership you did as a sophomore and junior, every game not just here and there!!! Another game that proved this team goes as does Hasquet, he plays well we are as tough as anyone. He slumps, and the team struggles. Staudacher is too good of shooter to continue being inconsistent. Ryan just let the game come to you and relax. I am guessing he is pressing too much. Swift, Where is the player we seen in the scrimmage and the one that busted ass all offseason? How hurt is he? Sharp, solid job in very few minutes. When he is on why not keep him on the court more?

Andrew, where would we be without him? FT shooting is becoming mental for him now. Sounds stupid, but get a text book, phone book, anything to put under his feet during practice to keep him on his toes and off his heels. Shoot 100 FT's daily with something under his heels, his FT's will improve drastically! When he even slightly stays on his toes with weight forward he makes most his FTs. He falls back much too soon after releasing. My college buddy had the same problem, his old coach told him do just what I suggested. Guess what, he went from 55% his Sophomore year to 82% his JR year, to 88% his SR year. It also improved his perimeter shooting. Weight distribution starts in the toes and works all the way up.

I know the coaches will work hard to cure the problems. I know the players are frustrated. Conference play is here, I have faith we can get things rolling again. Honestly, just need some shots to start falling and get some confidence back. The fundamental things are very minor and will come. The mental part though is getting consistency and a few leaders to step up. Hasquet is soooooooooooooo close to filling that void. As is Rundles, but which upperclassman will?

Here is to hoping they put this game behind them. Ellis is fine, and we kick ass in conference play!!!! You guys can do it :thumb:

Good post Mt.

I cannot add much to it. One thing I was thinking about that can't really be measured. The loss of Crsiwell and Mathews is bigger than anyone thought it would be. I know Tinks has challenged people to step up into leadership roles. Some people aren't good at it, and other players don't respond positively. Leaders have to naturally evolve, they are not appointed, nor do they become one by getting on other players. When things got tough last season, and the year before, Criswell was there to get a big basket, make a steal, calm his teammates down, be a coach on the floor so to speak.

When conference play begins next week there should be a sense of urgency. The Griz begin play with the team that is playing the best BB of the BSC thus far, on the road no less.

A couple of wins cures a lot of problems. These guys need to be mentally tough, weather the storm, and let the offense come to them. They can resolve to take out their frustrations on the defensive end and the boards. Defense can ignite the offense.

I still think the pieces are there, time for Tinks and company to put them together. Go Griz.

Change always looks like a mess when you're in the middle of it. We're still experiencing some change. The guys are still getting use to some new ways of doing things. This team is learning a lot about itself, just like families or companies do, and the most valuable learning usually takes place in times of adversity. I'm excited about upcoming conference play. There's a hell of a lot of work to be done, but we'll be OK.

I have complete faith in Tinks, Hill, Duchesne, and Marso. I know they know what needs to be done. They know the talent we have. However, leadership cannot be forced on any player. Eventually someone will step up. It looks to me that Rundles and Hasquet really want to, but are being careful not to step on upperclassman toes. Martin is capable of doing it, not sure why he has not. Maybe because he is so hard on himself and feels he has not earned the right? Dloughy is SR and former walk on. Some games he has the passion he had his SO and JR years, but his passion seems to come and go. Could he be looking forward to finishing his collegiate days, and just riding things out? Stait leads by example, can he become vocal? Ellis, also leads by example, but may feel uncomfortable being vocal? Mayes, does anyone really know him aside from his teammates? Who knows, but someone has to step up. Also I think Seyfert's attitude is being missed. He was a leader too, even though he was hurt last year!!! He was always positive and the enforcer type. Not like anyone would mess with someone that big!!!!!

We will see, good observation GB :thumb:

this is so perplexing....on paper, based on what we had returning we looked like a budding power in the northern rockies.

team seems tentitive, inconsistant, lacking passion....

interesting too that the above three described Criswell and Matthews....I did not think they would be as hard to replace, but I am wrong BIG TIME!

At this juncture the BSC looks to be weak and wide open, with EWU a contender if Stuckey plays and look out for ISU and NAU. We are in trouble, the conference may be a mess of teams with 8-8 records come late Feb.

pulling for you guys, but it looks like the ladies will steal the thunder this year.

I hate to be so pessimistic and blame it on one guy but a team being "tentitive, inconsistent and lacking passion" is generally a sign of poor coaching.

I meant to say that Criswell and Virgil were NOT tentative, were consistant, and most obvious to me PASSIONATE about Bball, UM, and TEAM...good bb teams need a 'qb leader type' ...sadly we do not have any at this point, but we still have a BSC season to prove we can do it.

I don't think you have a problem with getting on Tinks at all. I have read some of your other stuff. It is pretty obvious what you think of him, so please try not to be so patronizing. You are quite transparent. Please do tell us how you would make things click. You don't even know what the issues Tinks was referring to in the post game interview are, but you sure didn't need that in order to place blame. Please tell us more how you "hate to be so pessimistic and blame it on one guy". The players bear no responsibility?

I don't think I have ever been mistaken for a blind "rah rah" UM athletics promotion machine, therefore, it should be apparent I'm no shill for O'Day or Tinkle.

That said, and as objective as I can be, I'm thinking O'Day and Tinkle are doing fine, and the players are working hard, and we're going to work it out in time.

That's why there is a non-conference schedule before the conference season begins.

I truly believe this team can win the BSC tourney.

Time will tell.

After watching the game one is left with several observations-
1.Portland was decent
2. Griz really only have one consistent player
3. Coaches do not adjust-Matt D should have been
benched; Griz needed to go Zone-Portland
was quicker
4. It shows how much difference leadership makes.
Hopefully it can improve befoe the wheels come
off.

Hard to argue with this. The Cooper kid has made a big difference in the Portland team. The other BSC schools didn't have to go against him. Not excusing the Griz because this is a team they still should beat. Hopefully the issues with Ellis and whatever else is going on internally get resolved quickly so the Griz can get back to playing as a team. The chemistry is lacking right now.
