Griz pick up their first commit

Well-known member
Jordan Gregory from East high school in Pueblo, CO committed to the Griz today. Gregory was on campus this week end for home coming and decided to commit.

I have some info on Gregory on my Blog

Here is some info from ESPN

I will have more tomorrow

Awesome news. Our mens team can recruit compared to other staffs. Tinkle is very likable and great salesman. I have introduced a few friends and kids to Tinks. Every one of them came away impressed. He has a great personality, and when you combine that with a great physical presence, it makes for instant respect.

A few friends were intimidated by him. After introduction and general talk, they commented "For such a big guy, he is friendly."

I will try watching Gregory play this year, if and when they play in Denver or road trip down to Pueblo (the trip sucks though.).

Sounds like a nice pick up and i love the job tinks and his staff are doing. My question/concern is what does this mean for us and mitchell farr? i really like that kid and i think he was excactly what a needed to add to our backcourt (a dead eye sharpshooter).

Probably splitting hairs but regardless kudos to the coaching staff for their hard work on the recruiting trail! :thumb:

I have finally managed to get back to Gregory and I have an update on my blog. I talked with a few folks who have seen him play and he really reminds of current Griz freshman Vaughn Autry at the same stage of his career

Does this mean someone is leaving? We only had one scholly to give, and that went to Gregory.
I think it means the coaches are telling the players that they better earn their scholarship for next year (2011-12). As I said before it would not surprise me if one of the three JC signed last spring and summer may end up at the short end of the stick with Jamar and Vaughn making their presence known.

Also remeber just about every D-1 program loses 1 returnee every spring/summer.

Believe me, I am elated with quality of recruits we are landing or even considering us. I do have a concern though. How hard is or us to get 6'8" plus post players to look at us? Most the recruits and signees are Wings, 1 through 3 (PG, SG, SF, combo). Qvale is graduating after this year. Selvig the year after. That leaves us with Hutchison and Reader as our only decent sized big men. Sorry, but I cannot see Ward as a legit big post player, even though he is effective. I see everyone else more as power 3's or 3's in general.

This concerns and surprises me, considering Tinkle's experience being a big and developing them. Could it be the GRIZ have a few trump cards in bigs they are keeping close to the vest in hopes to keep more competition at bay for their services?

To be honest, offensively teams can overcome true bigs. Defensively though, part of the reason we are so effective is because of our length in Qvale and Selvig. We play great defense now. I watch the GRIZ very intently every year every chance I get (TV, internet, or live). Our defense struggles a lot without either Selvig or Qvale on the court. I do expect that to improve though with Reader and Hutchison.

Anyone with any idea of who, what and when big recruits come into play again? The 6'7" and under post guys will never cut it at the DIV 1 level. What is going on with recruiting bigs?

I will admit that with Qvale graduating, I would expect at least one of the recruits that he may sign to be a big man. But in the past 4-5 months I have only heard of one big mean the Griz have been interested in and about 10 perimeter players.

But I guess time will tell.

I have it from Multiple sources that Kevin Henderson did indeed commit to Wayne Tinkle yesterday and will sign with the Griz next Month. Maybe more info later today.

Thanks for the info Mslacat. Sounds like Henderson is another great recruit for the Griz! I wonder if we already have a player who plans on not coming back...

As for recruiting all the guards/small forwards, maybe Tinkle liked how smurf ball worked for the Griz FB team in the 90s, so he's bringing it to the BB team!

It does seem like we are pretty well loaded with guards and small forwards right now. I think Ward will be fine though in the post. He was just a freshman last year, so he had some off games, but also showed quite a bit of potential out there I thought. Do they plan on converting Weisner to a post player or using him more as a 3? He seems a little too thin to be a post player right now..

Another talented wing. I am not sure to take all wings being recruited as a sign Tinkle is happy with the progress of Selvig, Reader, Hutchison, and Ward, we are not recruiting bigs, or no bigs are interested.

Is Tinkle preparing for balls to the wall pressure using a lot of pressure and depth? I love that kind of defense, but for it to work, I think we need some shotblockers in the paint, and rebounders.

What is going on with the recruiting emphasis? Not much depth up front for A Q S (after Qvale/Selvig).
Then again, Tinkle has done great building this program, and it is hard for me to doubt him. What does Tinkle have in mind for the GRIZ? Anyone with any ideas?

Btw, happy to have the new recruits. Welcome to GRIZNATION!
