GRIZ/Pacific

I didn't get a chance to make it to the game or listen to it on the radio. How was the "white out" they had planned? And, how was the crowd overall? I was hoping that with this game being the "bracketbuster" and Pacific being a fairly big name from a few years ago, a win over Pacific would give the Griz the much-needed push into the final games before the conference tourney.

Huh? A big name from "a few years ago?" What are you smoking? UOP was in the tournament last year, too. The Tigs would have played YOU in the second round had the BC game come out better. This year is just an aberration in an otherwise outstanding program. You just wait till next year. The recruiting classes are looking great.

The crowd size was decent for an afternoon game. I don't know why they didn't play Sat. night instead. Afternoon games never draw well and Sat nights do. The students were pretty well "whited out". The crowd was somewhat. It's not going to look much like a "white out" anyway when fewer than half the seats are occupied.

Interesting side note: As I watched the game, I recognized one of the officials from somewhere...but just couldn't place him. After I got home today I checked the gamebook and saw one of the officials was Bill Vinovich, and it immediately came to me. He is an NFL official, a referee in fact, so he gets lots of face time on TV on Sundays in the fall.

He's the official that rung up the technical on Dlouhy for complaining about a call and also called a double technical later for a post whistle scuffle between two players.

I thought Dlouhy had the T coming. I am not sure about the double T.

Dlouhy did have the T coming, the double T was questionable, Chaves got shoved hard in the back, then turned around and said something (presumably not nice) and they both got T'd up.

No doubt that he had that T coming. He needs to take a step back sometimes and realize that he is supposed to be a leader on this team. You can't lead from the bench. Personally I didnt think that Tinkle should have put him back in the game, but im not coaching. The other thing that bothered me and a few people I was sitting with, was the fact that not a single coach said anything to him on his way to the bench. Then one coach did talk to him, but all he did was pat him on the back. Must have been the old "good job on giving them 2 free throws, better hope we don't lose by 1" speech.

I agree on Dlouhy. As far as coaches saying something, my coach told me the time to worry was when he isn't saying somthing to you. I think that may be the case with Dlouhy. He has not shown a bit of leadership this season, mostly feeling sorry for himself when his shot isn't falling. It is too bad to see him not play to his potential.

senior leadership is something that is definatley lacking from this team.

Personally I see Rundles stepping up as a leader and of course Strait should also be playing that role as well going into next year.

I 100% agree regarding Dloughy and SR leadership. At least Chavez leads by example on the court and always gives his best effort.

This season is turning out nowhere like I expected/predicted. Leadership, defensive desire, and inconsistent offense have been the most glaring problems. With that said, I am still 100% behind Tinkle and his staff, and NOT here to bash the coaches. I am a huge fan of GRIZ basketball, and for the most part try my best to be upbeat.

I am not the coach, but as fan am extremely frustrated. I know the coaches and most players are even more frustrated. The hardest part of this is that every game it seems to be something different holding back this team.

(1) Leadership- at this point my thinking is "the hell with waiting for SRS to do it." Time to "officially" hand the reigns over to Rundles, Hasquet, and Strait. Time for any player to jump those that whine about refereeing and/or any kind of negative attitude(s). SR leadership has not happened to this point game in, game out, "why continue to think it will happen now?" At least Rundles, Hasquet, and Strait always give their best and exemplify what I expect of being a GRIZ player. To all returning players next year, take note of this, it makes a huge difference on and off the court!

(2) DEFENSE for 40 minutes, not just when needed. Fact is, DEFENSE is always needed. I think #1 has lead to #2. Defense is about 3 H's: Heart, Head, and Hustle. As someone that has witnessed practices, God knows the coaches instill those things in every player! Why do a few players game in, game out not do those 3 things for 40 minutes? Tinks has experimented with personnel changes time and time again, yet still inconsistency with the defense. :thumb: to Mayes for being a positive defensive difference.

I think there is 1 more thing to try defensively the last few games for 5 minutes plus. Try Vanderjagt at Center along with Hasquet, Strait, Mayes, and any other Guard. Use him defensively near and in the paint only to lessen his responsiblities some. Maybe I am way off base here, but what more do we have to lose? I know more height at most all levels has positive impact. Could it in this case? This year the BSC is a "dog fight". Best case i see for us is # 2 seed (with bye), worse case is #4 seed, either way hosting round 1 game. 2 to 4 we play at Ogden. I honestly feel we have much more to gain than to lose in experimenting with Vanderjagt. Worse case, is he does not help and it motivates a few others, as it should!!!! That alone would beneift the GRIZ in BSC tourney.

(3) What has ever happened to penetrating? Ellis does it more than anyone, and results are good usually. Rundles just did it against Pacific, once again, good results when he did. Dloughy did it against Weber State (I think it was them). It resulted in FT's (which he buried), created better shots for team mates, and got them in foul trouble. All of which were positive. Swift did it also that game I believe, once again same results. Point is "Penetrate, penetrate, penetrate". Good things happen a lot more often than when not penetrating. Just like defense, we are being the aggressors and the aggressor win much more often than not. If the players choose not to penetrate, sorry to say this, give the ball every damn time to Jordan and/or Strait, after all when either of them get touches, points are the result! To be honest, I would not blame either if one or both decided to become selfish for the remainder of this year.

I am hoping the remainder of this year is defined as an NCAA Tourney ticket. The coaches and fans know a NCAA tourney appearance should be and is the expectation with this talent. If that does not happen, I will feel let down and disappointed, just as the coaches will. I will be at every home game in 07/08 still. "Players, please step your games up defensively and go to the damn hole more often!" I have no doubts, if we do those 2 things we are in the "BIG DANCE" again. If not, see all the returnees next year with welcomed additions of Selvig, Qvale, Groves, Cox, and any other recruit coming aboard.

Good luck GRIZ, lets see the GRIZ dancing well into march!! :thumb:

Great post Grizrule, good points;

As for point #1, I think its starting to happen, Rundles is gaining respect, the Pacific game showed how he can lead by example. The team seems to respond to Hasquet, usually when Jordan starts heating up, so do the Griz.

#2 - Defense has been the biggest frustration to me this year, if possible I think maybe an assistant coach needs to be brought in who can teach a more sound defense, but probably more importantly the DICSIPLINE to do what needs to be done to play better D.

It will definitely be Rundles, I'd bet a lot on it. I've been ridin the Cam bandwagon from the start. He's just dyin to be the vocal leader and floor general.

He is at the right position, the leaders generally are the guys who handle the ball a lot. He is only going to get better and better. I think the Griz will be much improved next season after this transition from LK to Tinks.

I just don't get the national media, particularly ESPN and CBS when they deign to air UOP. They always refer to UOP as "Pacific," which is admittedly innocuous, or even (until recently with all sports and now mainly just WBB) "Pacific (Cal.)." I guess that's kinda necessary since there's a school in OR called "Pacific University," with the name reversed, that kept getting congratulatory calls when UOP made the NCAAs. What really gets my goat, though, is those score graphics in the corner of the screen. The Tigers are decidedly NOT "PAC." The correct abbreviation/acronym is "UOP." I wish they'd get it right.
