GRIZ/Pacific

77-78 pacific. final. ellis misses last shot. the griz took time out with 13 secs to go to set up the last play.

I sure didn't want to see Ellis be the one to take that last shot. Wasn't anyone else open?

did martin get hurt? I only got to listen to the second half, and looking at the stats he only took 2 shots.

First half, Griz didn't come to play. Dlouhy not paying attention at all when a ball comes his way kind of typified that half. Naturally it bounced off of him and opponent steals it. Someone mentioned crowd was in a coma. Well, the Griz appeared to be in a coma, especially on defense, although they had some moments of good defense only to break down giving them an easy basket.

Second half, Griz play much better, catch up with much more energy and should have won it. Around 17 minutes left I just figured they would catch up and take lead around the 10 minute mark, but Hasquet got his 4th foul. A Ticky tacky one, but he did not quite have his hands up straight, catching the shooter on the arm by such a small margin. Seems the next play down the court, Rundles was really hammered hard and no foul on Pacific defender. Not so consistent there.

Anyway, Griz did catch them took a 4 point lead, 74- 70, and I figured they would win it. I was wrong though. Damn. Especially since Pacific really screwed up by scoring their last basket way to early and we bailed them out by not executing at our end. So, that really ended up being that Pacific didn't screw up because of our lack of execution.

Rundles played great today. 20 points. Chavez gave us a spark in both halves.

Anyway, the next three games are so much more important. Griz better come out playing in both halves, not just the last half.

Real disinterest in defense by the Griz in the first half. Mayes completely shut Esparza down in the second half and provided considerable defensive energy. Mayes, Rundles, Ellis, Strait and Sharp were on the floor when the Griz made their charge and then took the lead. Chavez also figured in to the comeback. I would like to have seen Mayes on the floor for Pacific's last posession. IMHO, we suffered today due to the defense of Dlouhy and Hasquet. Rundles showed tons of spark and leadership. :twocents:

The play wasn't supposed to go to Ellis. He was screened at the top of the key and was supposed to bounce the pass to Strait as Pacfic would double team out of screens. However Pacific was in a zone and collapsed on the passing lane, which blew up the play.

Then it was just a mess, guys just scrambling to get open, and time wound out, Ellis had to shoot it. It hit the front of the rim, a little more power and that would've dropped.

If the Griz played like they did in the 2nd half they'll win the Big Sky tourney. They played good defense, moved the ball well and shot well.

Officiating was questionable, Pacific got a lot of helpful calls and in two cases blatantly traveled and was not called. Meanwhile the Griz were getting elbows smashed in their faces underneath and it was never whistled.

Pacific was fast, athletic and opened the game 12-13 shooting. That Espersa guy went 5-5 shooting 3 pointers, he was red hot in the 1st half, I think he had all his shots in the 1st, if not most of them. Their center was tall and lanky, pretty quick too.

The first half was crap, the Griz were sluggish and sloppy. Strait did not play well in the 1st, Dlouhy hit some shots but was awful on D. Even Mayes and Chaves did not play as well as they had been in the past few weeks. Seemed like they were still shaking off the cobwebs from the Weber loss.

The second half was fun, the Griz came back from a huge defecit on Ellis' solid D, Hasquet, Strait and Rundles hot shooting and Sharp & Mayes tightening up their D and playing well. Andrew was on fire, he hit a lot of shots, had some second chances and I think he blocked 2 or 3 shots. Hasquet scored 7 strait before getting two total BS fouls, he came in to hit the game-leading 3 with 24.4 seconds left. It was an emotional 2nd half too, Dlouhy got a T for sharing his opinion on a non-call and Chaves and the big center or Pacific got a double T, the big guy shoved Mike and Mike said something back, they weren't going to call anything until Mike turned and said something, that guy would've gotten away with shoving him.

Despite the loss it was a fun game to watch and you could see this team waking up and rallying around their guys on the floor. I hope they can build from this game and continue the momentum from the 2nd half into the next couple of weeks.

It was also cool to get a glimpse into what Rundles will become for this team, he's going to be one of the best players in the Big Sky. Sharp also gave us some hint of what to expect with him, he hit a 3, hit some inside shots and also played good D underneath.

Good game Griz, this loss really means nothing, build on the good stuff and kick some butt from here on out. Go Griz!

I hate to be the guy that sounds like a dick but honestly, how is our worst shooter (going by FG %) taking these big shots?

Read my post above, the play wasn't designed for him to take that shot. Pacific busted up the play called and time wound down, its the way it goes.

I figured that... this is what happened in the WSU game, their zone busted our play. When that happens, as soon as we recognize it, you gotta isolate and go to squet or cam. anyone else agree?

No, I do not agree. However, if I knew what a squet or cam were, I might be inclined to follow that line of reasoning.

Esparza got lucky. I've been on his case since the Big West Tournament last year when he fell for the old fake shot clock trick. He's inconsistent at best, as shown by his night-and-day halves. Maybe your defense had something to do with that, maybe he just choked. I'm not sure. But since I didn't see the game, I'll give youse guys the benefit of the doubt.

The Griz should have whipped Matt White up one side of the court and down the other. Spud Webb could kick his shell. After so long of seeing centers like Vic Trierweiler, Michael Olowokandi, et al, seeing this guy is a complete letdown.

It must have been a good game overall. Good luck for the rest of the year.

Lay off Ellis for Christ sake, you are on his ass all the time an dit is getting really old. You bitch even when he was the leading scorer and his teammates are telling him to shoot. The last play wasn't for him but he had not choice but shoot given what happenned. Would you rather he dribble the clock to zero? How the hell can you claim to be a writer when you are so biased? :loser:

Thought I would pass on the rest of the Big Sky Schools in bracket buster:

EWU beat UC Santa Barbara 71 - 70 on the road.
NAU beat San Jose State 78 - 67 at home.
PSU lost to Cal Poly 92 - 87 on the road.

Big Sky Conference got a split.

could have been 3-4 if the Griz had come to play the 1st half. I give them credit for the second half effort, but they are not good enough to beat teams when they don't play hard for 40 minutes. It has happenned a couple times now, and Tinks addressed it in the post game show. Nice to see Kyle Sharp showing signs of life.

Sharpie has come to life since the fall of Drew. It is a HUGE sign that we could see great things from this team next season.....

I have to admit I didn't think Sharp had it in him, but he is starting to gain confidence and is showing he can play at this level. Tinks deserves credit for not giving up on a few of these guys, even though some critics said he was playing too many players.
