Griz On the Playoff Bubble: PLAYOFFS still a real possibility in 2016

Where are they wrong? I happen to be one of the ones that feels if the Griz handle the cats, they will be in the playoffs. Are they playing great right now? No, obviously not, but I think they still have the fire power and for what it's worth (and I know people hate this but, tough)...name recognition and $$$.

Pass the Kool-Aid!

Montana doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs. Its too bad that they had to water down the playoff format by adding more teams. Lets just give everyone a participation ribbon. At this point the only teams from the Big Sky that deserve it are: EWU & UND. The rest of the teams in the Big Sky are just bed wetters.

Not one person has mentioned the season ending trend. The Griz will end up losing 3 out of 5 best case.

The committee has used season ending trends in the past.

Also ending the season trending 2-1 and ranked in the top 22 in the country, top 20 sagarin ranking and with 7 Division I wins.

Speaking of trends...

Montana made the playoffs every year between 1993 and 2009 when only 16 teams were selected, winning national titles in 1995 and 2001 and making it to the championship game in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009.

The Grizzlies have played 55 playoff games since they first qualified in 1982.

Montana’s 23 postseason appearances are an FCS record.

Montana will eventually make it 24, will it be this year? I think they still have the resume to be in with 24 teams getting in and how the season has played out nationally.

First, let’s forego the gratuitous insults.

Famous, (and valid) saying: “It is what it is.”

Not many on this board would deny that going to 24 teams for the FCS playoffs was a bad idea. But the NCAA chose to do that … and that’s the system we have. Why should anyone stand on their high horse and say some of these “lesser” teams -- including the Griz -- do not “deserve” to be in the field. They deserve to be in because “It [the system] is what it is.” And have you checked out some of the other teams that are currently 6-4, and within reach of a 7-4 record? Some of them make the Griz look like Alabama. So advocating that UM somehow should sneer at “participating” brings to mind another old cliché: “Cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

As fans, let’s enjoy the fact that these young men are in a position to be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. (Maybe not a good position, but still … ) There are about eighty other FCS teams that would love to be in their shoes.

LOL, that video of Mora never gets old. I'm just hoping the Griz win a game this weekend so we can talk playoffs starting about 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

"Playoffs?!? Don't talk about playoffs! I just want to win a (away) game!"
Did I miss something somewhere? I could have sworn the Griz went on the road and beat Northern Iowa, which has come back to being 5-5, and only three spots out of the top-25.

Still, I’m do understand the frustration, which I share. For quite a long time now, the Griz have had trouble on the road. Not sure why that is, but they just don’t seem to play with the same intensity away from WaGriz.

Wow... you are really, really banging this drum aren't ya? Everyone gets it, you've made your case known multiple times, multiple different ways, in multiple different threads. You really, reallly think the griz deserve a playoff spot if the beat the Cats on Saturday. I'm not sure WHY you want them in so bad, but I guess sure - you'll get one more game, maybe two. If you do get two....... that second one will be an embarrassing ass kicking, so have fun with that.

His statement about wanting the Griz to make the playoffs is a f--k of a letter better than your boy Docket3 or however he spells, who posted this little gem last year. "I'd rather the Cats go 5-6 every season than have to lose to NDSU in the second round of the playoffs."

Regardless of the protestations to the contrary a team like Montana can buy its way in. I recognize that the bids aren't open till after the teams are selected but to suggest that the committee does not figure in to its decision those teams that have a past history of both a high bid and good attendance that first week is simply not recognizing the reality of the system. Sure, you are never going to get a committee member to admit it, but that does not mean they don't give it consideration. With all other factors being the same, ( won/loss; SOS), that team with history of a higher bid is going to get in.

Any way you slice it, that is buying your way in!

Bidding though has Zero, absolutely nothing to do with playoff selection of the 24 teams in the field. It's not a criteria nor something they are supposed to consider nor is it even part of the process. Bidding is only for those teams who are "IN", the teams selected... and is THEN used to determine the home team in games where neither team are a "Seed". You can not buy your way into the playoffs, not now, not ever.

No, that's wrong, the bid is the minimum face value of a regular season home game, which if I remember correctly, was $30-plus this season. It so happens that's higher than any other team's lowest ticket price for a regular season game that the Griz could potentially face in the first round. That's why it generally can never be matched. It is absolutely nothing like the old 1AA days. Nothing. Now, I guess, if you can prove that Montana intentionally sets its regular season ticket prices that way in April, in anticipation of a home game in November, fine. I would need to see proof that that's why the Sac. State and Mississippi Valley State games cost as much as they do, and I actually haven't seen that proof.

It's also of note that, this lasts for exactly one round anyway. The winners of the first eight games automatically travel to a seeded team that will host that game no matter what the price of tickets cost, or how much the NCAA isn't going to make off those games. Montana couldn't host the next round regardless.

Good article on attendance for the playoffs last year.

“They’re in the playoff hunt, which is all you ever want to be,” Gregorak said of the Griz. “That’s our goal. Our goal is to compete for Big Sky championships and get into postseason play. You get into postseason and it’s a whole new season." Tyler Gregorak, MSU D-Coordinator
