GRIZ/ NAU thread

Was that second half the best they've played this year?

Whatever it was, it was terrific b-ball. Nice to see them regroup after some stumbles. We all knew they've been capable of playing like this.

AJ is in MVP form again, just at the right time of the year.

WOW, what a turnaround in one week. Everything I said they needed to improve on after the CAT game, happened this weekend. Rebounding, better shooting, penetrating, post depth, and improved help defense, could not ask for much more as a fan or coach. Oh by the way, I think Cherry was 5 of 6 from the line. Barnball, you are beginning to see why some us are high on this kid.

Great weekend GRIZ!

Will Cherry is definitely making a case for Big Sky defensive player of the year..5 more steals tonight...... great game by the Griz.... Jack played a great all around game, AJ of course had a HUGE second half... really good defensive effort as a team! :thumb:

I think everyone here at egriz can take some credit for that win. After ragging on them all week, they got the message and realized they needed to improve dramatically in many key areas, as noted above. The Grizzlies played like their tails were on fire, coming through with 2 big road wins.

(just kidding) :thumb:

Okay, my internet connection crapped out (thank you Verizon!!) just as Tinks was going to come on the post-game show. Anything remarkable or notable said??

The 2nd half was a clinic by AJ and Cherry! Nice game by McGillis too. AJ jumped back in to the league MVP race this weekend! Excellent picture from Big Sky TV too (at least on my PC) and a pretty good announcing crew. :D

Tinkle commented last weekend guys started to be about stats and playing time. The coaches put a halt to any possible problems right after the Cat game, before things could get out of control. The coaches challenged all the players to step up, in particular worked hard on rebounding, help defense, and transition offense.

All the coaches have been telling the players all week they believed they are the best team in the conference, and time to play like it. He was relieved the players bought into it, and sounded confident they have turned the corner.

He praised everyone, but a little extra to AJ, Cherry, and Jack. He feels Ward and Young are on the verge of busting out, like their attitudes, and in turn found them some playing time this weekend. He is very pleased they found minutes for everyone this weekend and they all contributed.

Where is the hater that posted nothing but criticism of the team and coaches during the Northern Colorado game thread? No where to be found, funny how that happens. :o

That's good to hear. One got the sense that the coaches didn't have control of things for a while there. It's especially good that, when they demanded a change and put a plan in place, the team got such dramatic results. Should encourage the players to stick with the program.

I am not sure what Cherry did to warrant benching the 1st half against UNC, but apparently the benching made the players hear Tinkle loud and clear. I sat behind the GRIZ bench at UNC, I watched Cherry a lot. He took the discipline well. He was on that bench cheering and encouraging his teammates. It looked to me understood, accepted, and respected the decision.

All Tinkle said is the benching was for team rules. We will never know what caused the benching, and I doubt we will never know. Where is the Kaimin digging up dirt on this one? (PS we do not want to know).

Here is Bob Messerol's game blog, How amazing were AJ and Cherry? They combined for 40 points in 1 half! I cannot recall ever seeing that from any college guard tandem in one half. That is AMAZING!

Player of the game: Senior guard Anthony Johnson. Johnson scored 25 of his 28 points after halftime and brought freshman Will Cherry along for the Ride. Cherry had 15 of his 19 after intermission when the Griz beat the Lumberjacks at their own game.

Reasons for optimism for the Griz:

1. Johnson. The senior guard looked like the player who led the league in scoring last season, driving to the rim at will.

2. Cherry. The freshman responded well to being disciplined for the Northern Colorado game and came out doing what he does best against NAU: blowing past players on the perimeter and clogging passing lanes on defense.

3. The Griz play four of six at home to close the regular season. The first of those four is a big one against league-leading Weber State.

Reasons for concern for the Griz:

1. Really couldn't see one tonight.
