Hard for me to give much analysis of this game, thanks to taking forever (4 minutes left in 1st half) to get into bigskytv. It really looks like AJ and Cherry will be a nightmare guard tandem not only for the BSC teams, but they can compete with most teams backcourts. They are already good, and will only get better as Cherry continues to develop and learn. Tinkle must be getting more comfortable with Cherry out there, it seemed like he played a lot of minutes. Cherry is looking to take the ball to hole some now, but could do it a lot more. I also noticed his shooting motion is smoothing out slowly. He even has nice rotation on his shot. Good rotation on a shot is a very good sign, even if the % is still low. It really looks like he is working on his shot. In my opinion, we should have either Cherry or AJ on the court at all times for athleticism and defense on other point guards.
Stockton, Taylor, and Stauds are all solid in their roles, and can also only get better. Taylor looks like our best perimeter shooter right now. Stauds is the key for improvement with these 3, being he is struggling now with his shot, and with his stroke, I think it is just a matter of time before he finds it again. Stockton is flatout smart, and a solid defender as well. I think he can score, if asked to do so. As a whole, I love our guards.
SF/3 has the depth, but needs to find the consistency. Young, Taylor, Stauds for the most part get the minutes there. The key here is Young. His athleticism and skills are there, but so inconsistent so far, on both ends of the court. I did notice a nice change though, one I hope that continues. He is adding some discipline and veratility to his game. Up to the NAU game, he was most relying on shooting 3's. The NAU game he seemed to look to get shots within 3 and even used some good pump fakes and moved much better without the ball. Basically, he looked much more comfortable out there, which is a great sign too. I think he is a few weeks from being a consistent minutes guy.
As for our post players, NAU was determined to shutdown our paint game (Qvale), and they did well at it. Ward was huge, and I was right comparing him with Strait, but a better perimeter game. The kid has a nice 12 to 21 foot shot, and even looks solid from the line. I honestly feel he could be a very good 3, but not sure of his perimeter defense. As always Qvale and Selvig impact the game, even if they are not scoring. Their impact will be there every game, you can not coach height, but can coach how to impact the game with it. There is not a better big tandem in the league than them. I feel this unit has room to improve too, being McGillis is too good to continue struggling like he is now. Vassy Banny is becoming one of my all time favorite GRIZ. He is the epithany of hardwork and accepting a role. I love his defensive and rebounding energy. Pound for pound, inch for inch he is our best rebounder. When he is in, pay attention to how well he boxes out and his position. If a coach or father wants to teach a kid about those, just have that player watch Banny. I just pray he keeps the mental toughness to continually fill the most difficult role on the team. His role is the one role I do not recall us having in a long time.
A few weeks ago, I said the key to this year team would be the development of Cherry, Ward, and Young. Good news, they are all developing nicely. The scarier part is there is so much room on this team for improved results. These guys can only continue to learn and blossom, meanwhile Stauds and Jack are not even close to playing at their potential. I just do not see 2 SR's struggling a year and it is just a matter of time before they find their games again.
I think Tinkle could not script the individual development of this team any better. In my opinion, they are about a month ahead of schedule in development. I have always loved my GRIZ, but every game I watch this team, I get prouder and more excited. Tinkle finally has a complete team for unity and role guys. The only things we need to get better are 3 point shooting, and rebounding.
Lets hope this continues, if so we are seeing the blossoming of one unbelievable GRIZ team. I will pray for good health. Now go get UNC. GO GRIZ!!!!!!
