"Griz looking to prove themselves after national runner-up finish"

1. "Montana football coach Bobby Hauck pointed to two plays when thinking back to the FCS national championship game in January.

The first play was the failed fourth-and-goal run from the 1-yard line, which prevented Montana from a potential 10-7 halftime lead over South Dakota State, although he felt they were still in striking distance down 7-3 at the break.

The second play was a fumble in SDSU territory on the opening drive of the second half as the Griz tried to again take their first lead before giving up 16 points in the third quarter against a team that allowed 9.3 points per game.

"I thought we could have won the game," Hauck said at the Big Sky Kickoff on Monday after the Griz were picked to repeat as conference champions. "It wasn't like we were outclassed or something."

2. "UM senior wide receiver Keelan White pointed to the same two plays as Hauck after watching film in the offseason.

"I definitely think we were balling with them that first half," he said. "We just couldn't execute and finish."

3. "Griz senior linebacker and Missoula native Ryan Tirrell also highlighted Montana's inability to execute in the game. He didn't feel the Griz were that far away, either.

"Not a doubt in my mind that we could play with them," he said. "They're the standard right now because they're the national champions. But there's definitely no doubt that we can get back there."

4. "Hauck pointed to trusting in his "process" as a reason why his teams have had success. That process, he said, includes things such as how they train in the weight room, how they practice, how they study film, how they teach football, how they attack academics, how they structure their week and more.

"Our process is our process, and that's probably why we're consistent," he said. "We're winning about an average of 11 games per year and then playoff games every year. Our process is good. I'm a believer in that."

No, sir. You're in the right place. I actually watched a replay of the game for the first time on TV last night on ESPNU. I was actively rooting for the outcome to be different somehow. I thought we could win, on a replay, of a game I attended and watched us lose. My family was laughing at me. I'm the one who needs help.

Exactly what I'm talking about. I watched that play last night thinking they might run up the middle and do the Bush Push, fully knowing that they wouldn't. This is why I can't watch replays of losses.

It's basically overthinking the play. If Seattle hands the ball off three times to Marshawn Lynch, he's gonna score. In this case it was a QB run up the middle. Yeah, replay losses are tough to watch.
 
Hindsight is always 20/20. It’s hard not look at what could have been, and the coaches feel that way too I’m sure. It totally discounts the flow in the game and the plan for those scenarios based on what was seen on film.
 
I think those two plays were very telling regarding how Bobby really felt about the match ups up front. If he thought his team was better he would have just lined up and pounded the ball in. Its incredibly difficult to play defense from there unless your front is discernibly better than the opposition. If he does choose to run the ball straight and he is unsuccessful people are questing him for running into the teeth of the National Champions defense. I'm not questioning his play calling...just his mindset.

Shouldn't hindsight be better than 20/20? Isn't 20/20 just average? We need to work to change this expression.

The 6'3", 225 lb senior from Naperville, Illinois has been a key player in the Jackrabbits' recent playoff runs and has led them to three national championships in three years as a starter. Gronowski is a two-time national champion, Walter Payton Award winner, and three-time All-American. He's also been named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year twice and was Phil Steele FCS Freshman of the Year in 2020-21.

How many 1st and 2d team STATS pre-season all-americans on Offense and Defense did SDSU get? Montana got 3.

I see that SDSU had playoff attendance of 10,171, 10,216 and 12, 265.

Montana had 20,580, 20,884 and 26,544.

Way more than double playoff attendance for the Griz. Why do so few people go to SDSU home games?

Nope, Griz not outclassed at all. SDSU was very good, Griz didn't capitalize on early opportunities, our QB got hurt in the first half, and SDSU pulled away in the 3d Q. Being down 3-7 at half is not being outclassed. Learn the game if you're going to post on egriz.
