Griz - ISU Game

Wow, amazed at how many people are underselling this Griz team, when they're healthy.

Next step, find consistency from game to game.
Splitting the the next 4 brutal games, will be tough.

Win or lose, this team is developing well.

By the way, Oke's limited minutes aren't because of bad play. It's because of the upside talent of Bannan and Thomas. Oke is playing well. His defense, nose for the ball, and rebounding are consistent. Seriously, watch this guy closely in his limited minutes. Watch how, he's always near the ball. I think he is on the verge of forcing DeCuire to a 9 man rotation.

If not this year, I'm confident in him next season. If he stays, some will be eating crow.

No long scoring droughts, shots from all over the court were falling all game long. Hard to lose when shooting stays hot all game. ISU never got anything going.
It was certainly a refreshing change, and a win feels damn good.

Be nice to think the Griz have finally turned the corner, but I'm trying to contain my enthusiasm. Of course, ISU did start conference play with a nice three-game winning streak. However, I'm very much afraid they were a paper tiger ... uuh Bengal, more in line with their overall record.

Very transparent post-game analysis from coach DeCuire (attached above by Colter/Skyline). In short: 1-- rebounding and limiting opponents to one shot per possession. 2-- "We've got good shooters." and 3 -- When Brandon Whitney is healthy, Montana's a better team at both ends of the court.
Montana shot 27 treys on Thursday (9/27) and last night (13/27)... all but one or two open looks.
Last night, however, I noticed (besides a beaut of a back-door play) a focus on running specific plays for specific players to get a quick-hitting trey after a timeout. Six Montana players made treys and two of the best were by Brandon, since ISU was daring him to shoot.
This Griz team is building a full-rotation identity and it's great to see Josh Vazquez and especially Jaxon Nap playing with more confidence, since they're a better team with an 8-9 man rotation. I believe this team has its best games ahead of them. Go Griz.

A deeper rotation, even if it only involves relatively short breathers for the starters, is crucial for this team, given DC's demand for hard-nosed defense. His defense(s) require intense concentration and effort ... draining both physically and mentally. I believe some of this team's earlier problems came when the main players simply ran out of gas ... not so much physically (although that too) but more as mental exhaustion. Having players coming off the bench and holding their own – or better – should allow the starters time to catch their breath and refocus for when they go back in. FWIW: I believe this has always been a factor for the Griz under DeCuire.

ISU is 4-12 against D-1 teams.

I think these next two games (EWU and MSU) will tell us everything we need to know about this team.
