During the recruiting process, Anthony Johnson had a little more to think about than your typical prospect. The quick 6-foot-3, 210-pound guard from Yakima Valley Community College had several offers on the table and he was starting to take official visits to see what he liked. But an added piece to the equation was if he could find his wife Shaunte, a talented hoopster herself, an opportunity as well. And when one school in the Big Sky Conference came through for both, it made a once-hard decision rather easy.
"It was down to Idaho, Montana, Seattle University, UC Irvine, and Boise State, and I settled down on Montana," Johnson said. "Basically, we had been praying about it a lot and when the women's program offered my wife a basketball scholarship, that was it. We're really excited about it."
Johnson had made an official visit to Montana this past weekend and liked what he saw. His wife didn't have a scholarship offer from Montana at the time, but brought game tape and met with the women's coaching staff during the visit. After the trip concluded, the Johnsons came home and relied on their faith to help them determine their future, and the next day Shaunte Nance-Johnson received an offer as well.
While there's no question the fact the couple can stay together - and on scholarship - at the Division I level played a huge part in his decision, Johnson definitely enjoyed his time in Missoula. "I love the coaching staff and the guys there are really cool," Johnson said. "I love the city of Missoula - it's a big down, but it's a basketball town too. They're going to be really good next year and the pieces are in place for me to be successful there. They just need someone who can make plays and attack the basket, and that's what I can do - make things happen."
Johnson continues the trend of Washington players headed to Montana.
Johnson could have taken more visits - he had previously visited Idaho the weekend before Montana - but it really didn't make any sense to prolong the process. It's a tremendous reward for the former Tacoma Stadium High School standout, who really blew up during his sophomore season at Yakima Valley. After averaging almost 25 points a game during the season, he dominated the NWAACC Tournament in helping the Yaks win a league championship.
Barely recruited out of high school, colleges now paid attention to a pure scorer who had made tremendous improvements to his game. "Oh my Gosh, my game has changed tremendously since high school," Johnson said. "I put on about 25 pounds of muscle since high school, and I couldn't shoot then but now I've got a nice mid-range jumper. I can also get to the free throw line about ten times a game. With everything now I play strong and get to the rim."
The step from the NWAACC to Division I isn't made by many, so Johnson knows there are still challenges left ahead. "I've just got to get a little stronger and smarter," Johnson said. "I'm already stronger than most of their guards and nobody could stop my first step when I played up there. But I've got to keep on working."
WashingtonPreps.com would like to congratulate Johnson and his family on his commitment.
I am pretty sure about this but isn't Shaunte Nance-Johnson the first JC player Selvig has EVER signed.
NO. His top assistant, Annette, was a JC transfer from Wenatchee Valley JC. I am pretty sure there have been at least 2 others.
Former Lady Griz player Jill Greenfield came from the same JC school as Annette. Jill and Annette are the only two I know of that came from a JC school.
