Griz Fans Going On The Record

His second stint at UM is an entirely different situation than the first time. He wasn't handed a well oiled machine which was widely known to be one of the most elite spots to play 1-AA football. He inherited a poorly coached program that in large part had taken a major step back in national relevance to teams like NDSU, JMU, EWU, etc and was tasked with a rebuilding project.
That BH was handed a well-oiled machine in '03 is just not true. The Griz lost 3 of their last 4 games in '02 and both QBs graduated. He was left with Jeff Disney. You have a different idea of what a well-oiled machine is than I do.

Didn't Ochs just fall into Bobby's lap after Craig visited Glenn before he left? That is how I remember it.

Get rid of Bobby, which means of course most of the other coaches go. I don't really care that much about 23' since there is no Robby, as long as he isn't hired by Daddy... The only thing I want is competence.

AKA, not running it up the A gap on 3rd and 23.

Perceptually, when Hauck was Hired in 2003, the rest of the FCS looked at Montana in a similar way that NDSU is looked at today. In the preceding 10 years to him taking over, Montana had played in 4 title games, won two of them and dominated the BSC, only losing 6 conference games in that span, not to mention being 93-16 overall from 1993-2002.

Hauck landed in about as good of a situation in 2003 as someone could wish for. The same cant be said for what he inherited in 2018, and has played a huge part in his inability to get UM back into the form he had them in during his first stint.

Here's the 2003 roster. It's pretty great overall.

Correct.

1) Big Sky Conference W/L record. How many wins will keep you as a Hauck supporter?
2) Defeating the Bobcats. If we lose again to the Cats, will you still support Hauck?
3) Playoff participation. How many wins must we achieve in the playoffs next season for you to continue to support Hauck?

I think it's hard to take a stance on these 3 points without knowing the context of the season. What if Montana gets decimated by injuries? What if the odds of a single game come down to a blown call (like possibly what happened to Incarnate Word last night). There's just some wild card aspects that are hard to.

Taking that caveat - my opinion would for sure change, however since one is unable to predict that stuff, here's my general take.

1) - 8 or more wins.

2) - Depends. I think Griz nation has to face the reality that MSU has built themselves to a powerhouse and they aren't going to be bad anytime soon. If Montana goes 9-2 or 10-1 with a loss to a superior MSU team then that's understood. What I will want to see is improvement/adaptation to slowing down what they do.

3) - Depends as well. For the most part home field is what keeps teams going, I'd say quarterfinals or better. Looking at the composition of the 2023 roster and the unknowns about staffing / system changes I don't currently know if this is a championship prepared team or not.

The Ochs family walked into my office and we talked about real estate and the market in Missoula. I'm trying to recall but I feel that was fall of 2002, so when Glenn was still here, yes.

Pretty sad, I recently saw news that Craig was arrested for theft.

Damn! $700,000. I hope there's more to the story and it's not actually fraud.
He seemed like a good kid. I recall he and Justin Green were regulars at the Alliance church in MSO when they were playing and authenticity kind people.

Does anyone think Hauck would actually change an OC/DC, position coach, etc?
What's the over/under?

Just my opinion, but it seems very unlikely he'll make any kind of change. I honestly believe that he thinks there is no problem. I think at least from the standpoint of due diligence he should kick the tires on some other options rather than continually trying to ram a square peg through a round hole. Lets just call his current staff "very mature" in what is becoming increasingly a younger mans games. If you're going tom staff guys who have been coaching for 30 and 40 years, you have to at least hope they will try to modernize their philosophies when it comes to coaching and recruiting. Lots of coaches at the FBS and even NFL level who are young and can relate a whole lot better to college kids than someone old enough to be their grandparent in some cases.

That said. Hauck tends to only see things his way, and digs his heels in at the suggestion his way might not be the best way.

Hauck knew Ochs from his time at CU.

While I know this thread, and my post, are basically a futile waste of effort I do think it is important that certain Haucksuckers (copyright AZgriz) understand that all is not well in Grizville and many fans, good, mediocre and bad are at the brink. I choose to answer the OP's original questions:

1) Big Sky Conference W/L record. How many wins will keep you as a Hauck supporter?
Well I'm not really a supporter but I would say that he needs to win or at least tie for the conference championship. In the AD's own words they brought back Hauck to win championships. FCS championships aren't going to come every year unless you are NDSU but it is important to be at the top of the Big Sky if only to get a seed.
2) Defeating the Bobcats. If we lose again to the Cats, will you still support Hauck?
No. He is 1-3 vs. the Cats. You really think a Griz coach deserves to be a Griz coach at 1-4. And this can easily happen disregarding the Cats showing today. We play them at home. Time to prove you belong.
3) Playoff participation. How many wins must we achieve in the playoffs next season for you to continue to support Hauck?
The entire FCS playoff system has become a joke because there are really only six to eight teams even competitve. The Griz will always get a home playoff game if they don't get a seed. For me it is time to at least make it to the semi-finals. Again this is what Haslam brought him in for - to win championships. If he can't do that then there are two choices. Keep Hauck and be average or bring in someone with some new ideas and hopefully build the program to move out of the FCS whose championship has become meaningless.

I once was a "keep Hauck and make changes" type of guy but most agree that Hauck will not make changes. And that is my main reason to hope UM will not extend his contract until he proves he deserves an extension based upon my above criteria. Criticize if you want but answer the OP's questions first if you do.

A) I truly, deeply, greatly appreciate you remembering that I coined the phrase Haucksuckers. I haven’t used it in a long time, but it’s good to see it rearing its ugly head again.
B) I 102% agree with this post, from top to bottom.

Counting cheap wins in the play-in round to pad victory totals is lame as fuck. Win the Big Sky. Beat the Bobcats. Make DEEP runs in the playoffs (i.e., semifinals).

That would make me support Hauck. Absent that, let’s fucking clean house and try something else. Doing the same thing over and over isn’t working.

If Hauck doesn’t have the vision to see that some of the current assistant coaches are below par than he’s below par as well. Pretty simple

100%... Hauck can't talk about playing at all, so that conversation doesn't exist. He had coaches that knew how to get through to players in 1.0... He doesn't have that in 2.0, with exceptions such as younger players like Green that have played in the NFL etc...

WHEN the offensive players weren't even born at the particular time that the OC was finished with his playing days, he can't talk about playing in 1990 because the players don't understand... Nothing against him, I liked watching him play at WAZZU, but he doesn't command respect... I almost think he runs ridiculous plays hoping to get fired because he has a secret notebook that he can show an AD for a HC position.

Running up the A gap on 3rd and 23 tells me he's angling to be fired... Yeah, that's an "out there" thought, but who does that?

Maybe he can go on to be said HC somewhere, where he would have the power to hire younger coaches that can relate to the players...

OR... I have no bloody idea how it works in the system, and Hauck gives him no control to begin with?

If he was a HOF alumni returning to speak, he might be able to snap his fingers and get respect... Just saying...
