Griz Fan Since...

This thread has made me smile..almost (not quite) has made me forget about managing the clock, kicking both halves, and giving an opposing team five yards on special teams, when all they need is two..I will still be as passionate as ever..but I do like winning..

I've been a Griz my whole life but went Griz A$$ crazy during the playoff run in 89. I always disliked the Cats but learned to hate the Vandals and finally vomit when I see anything that has to do with Jerk Russel or his Georgia Southern teams. My favorite times would of course be 95 and 2001 plus all the great games mentioned before but I loved the 96 season up until the championship game.....I guess you can add Randy Moss to my hate list.

1968, I even saw a game in Old Dornblazer, current site of the Mansfield Library. Suffered through a lot of bad years, I don't want to go back to those kind of teams. I hope and pray we can get back on the winning track this year.....

Went to my first Griz Cat game in Bozeman in 1957 (Griz lost) freshman in 1959 watched Terry Dillion, Bobby O'billovich, Pat Dodson, Paul Miller, John Lands (one of first great black players) and many others I can't think of, we won one game in 1959 beat BYU 12 to 6 in Provo, the next year we did much better I think we won 5 or 6 games beating the Cats on a late field goal by a kid from Billings by the name of Sorenson. Got my first season tickets in 1970 and will continue my 700 mile round trip to Missoula for every game for as long as I can climb those steps at Washingto Grizzly stadium win or lose I will be there.
A quick footnote: In those years there was always a special train for students for Griz Cat games what a blast that was.

Hmmmmmm, cant remember the exact year, but i know there were no seats in the endzones yet. I remember there was a lot of snow and a couple of kids were in the grass seating portion of the endzones spelling out Montana on one end, and grizzlies on the other. That was pretty cool, but i knew i was hooked on griz football when they built a snowman in front of the cannon and blew his head off after the griz first score. I thought, where else are you gonna see stuff like this. I have never had seasons tickets, but was always able to get tickets from somewhere. I have sat everywhere in that beautiful stadium and always seemed like i was sitting amongst people i had known forever. I have seen some crazy games, deleware, sdsu comeback, of course app state and froze my ass off in that place more than a few times! I have felt the elation of winning huge games, and the absolute dejection of losing some huge games (the wofford game still haunts me). Through it all, i cant think of any other place i would rather be on a saturday in the fall than Washington-Grizzly stadium with 25,000 of my closest friends. See you on the 27th! Go Griz!!

I never had the opportunity to ride that train (too poor), but I had friends who did -- they talked about it for weeks.

I saw many games at Old Dornblazer -- almost froze to death at some of them. I remember Homecoming in probably 1966, when it was snowing and blowing so hard, you could scarcely see the stands on the other side of the field -- and the Griz lost, although I don't remember who they were playing.

Thanks for posting to this Griz fans. I enjoyed reading about how long you all have supported the team, for some of you even when they were not at the top. The Griz dominated so much it became easy to take winning for granted around here so maybe this season is what Griz Nation fans like me who never experienced worse than a 7-4 no playoff season needed to appreciate what so many awesome coaches, players, and administration worked so hard to build. If the Griz were getting blown out every game I would be worried but this team will turn things around and work their butts off to reach the top of the BSC and FCS again.

Go Griz

During my days at UM (end of the Carlsen tenure, start of the Donovan) the Griz didn't have a winning season....and I have to admit that I spent as much time drinking and making out under the bleachers at Dornblaser as I did actually watching the games, but that's when I became a Griz. It's not something that you can put an objective handle on...its something that lives in your blood and becomes a part of every breath you take. Win or lose, I'm a Griz for 34 years now and that will never change.

Enjoyed reading all these posts but this thread almost sounds like an eulogy. Glad that is not true though and in 25 years we can all post a lot more of our favorite moments in Griz history.

1979
Recruited to run track for the Griz... visited campus and I was immediatley hooked. Watch games at Dornblaser.
Everyday is a great day to be a GRIZ!

The year, 1969, and with two years left in the USN I was watching the Camillia (sp) Bowl from the barracks. I knew that I wanted to go to UM when I got out, and I did. Empty bottles of booze raining down under Dornblaser Stadium like rain.... (how did you make out under that stadium??) It hasn't always been pretty but it has always been pretty good. Even when the season didn't go so well (and there were/are many), it has never crossed my mind to be anything but a GRIZ period So many ups and downs to list them all here, but the Appy game has to be right up there.

Been a fan since the start of the ’86 season. I was a sophomore in HS (in the heart of bobcat country) and my older brother was a freshman at UM and his roommate in Craig Hall was a Griz RS freshman (future All-Big Sky). When I heard that his roommate was on the football team I instantly declared my allegiance to the Griz and have been die-hard ever since.

One of my favorite memories is the1989 Boise State game. The Griz came into the game 6-1 and Boise was 5-2, yet they were ranked much higher than us. I don’t remember exactly but I think we were ranked about 10th and they were 3rd. There was a lot of controversy because their AD was involved in the ranking process, so the general consensus was that he was giving a whole bunch of home cookin’ to BSU (I remember articles in the Missoulian that week calling major BS). Boise got a TD on their first possession on about an 80 yard pass, and from there the Griz absolutely dominated them. We won 48-13, and it wasn’t even that close. I remember every time we scored, Mick Holien (he did PA in those days) would announce, “The 3rd quarter score, your Montana Grizzlies 34 and the 3rd Ranked Boise State Broncos 7!” All day long he referred to them as the 3rd Ranked Boise State Broncos (as in, “John Smith with a 2 yard gain for the 3rd ranked Boise State Broncos”), really rubbing their noses in it. It was awesome!

We’ll be in our seats in section 229B this Saturday, and have no plans to miss any home games in the future. Once a Griz always a Griz, once a bobcat always a pussy!

1964... I've loved all of it, especially the 1st time we made it into the top 25 of the nation and finally a national championship. I'm looking forward to the same thing. making it back to the top 25 and finally the championship. It's coming again!!!! Go Griz!
