Griz-EWU

I toothink it wasn't a good game for matt, quite a few mishaps but did try 2nd half to get others the ball. the griz will have a bad year because this coach cannot get it together either. this was a win but nothing is getting any better it could have been a loss just as well. the same problems are constantly rearing their heads.

Martin was given credit for playing well (despite not shooting well) in the post-game show, by an asst coach and the announcer. Of course, we all know that several of you know more than the coaches. The coach said EWU was focusing on Martin after his offensive performance at PSU. Martin penetrated, dissed off for 5 official assists (I would have given him 6), and played good defense.

Now don't get all nasty PR, we all know you never met a Griz you didn't like! And, I'm ok with that- :thumb:

It was an ugly game. The Griz did everything they could to lose. EWU just is a bad enough team that, no matter what, UM ended up on top by two points. I worry how badly the Griz are going to lose to the 'Cats --- please, let the basketball gods prove me wrong.

Martin had some nice assists but offensively did not play well. I think the coaches would agree with that assessment. It wasn't Strait's best game either although he only took 3 shots. Still, it is a win and other players stepped up, especially defensively. :thumb:

Nasty, BozGriz? You're the one who seems to want to diss Martin, whether the facts support your view or not. You even have to distort his shooting stats. The fact remains that Martin's penetration, dishing and assists (most of which came at important times), along with solid D, are one of about 4 things that won the game for UM. You apparently don't want to recognize, or can't see, that--perhaps because you just want to look for negatives that might support your pre-conceived notion.

Alicia Keys is beautiful. Did you see her on the superbowl pregame? She never goes overboard and dresses like a classy ladie

She needs to hit the Bun and Thigh Master.

That was an exciting game to watch.

Is the Tequila good there? Sounds like it.

It's a win. Great defense by CET on EWU's last possession. It doesn't say much for our depth when Martin plays on in spite of brick after brick. Obviously, Cam entered the doghouse to stay (for this game) in the first half. I really wonder what it takes to get Graves in a game. I really like the games CET and Stauds had. Hasquet also played well and Qvale, is spite of his offensive woes, really clogged up the middle. The Altitude announcers were lousy ( Hasquit??) and that includes Holst (expert on the bleedin' obvious).

I don't know if he's in the doghouse as much as he's not doing anything well enough to earn minutes. I think right now Cam is a kind of man without a position. He's been having too many turnovers and not enough assists to play the point. He's not shooting well enough to play at the shooting guard. He's also been struggling at the free throw line. Even defensively he's been picking up too many fouls.

CET and Stauds have clearly established themselves as the top two guards, so they are going to get the most minutes (deservedly I might add). I think right now Martin is the next best option at either guard position. In the 3 guard lineup Cam was still getting some minutes, but in the 2 guard lineup he's going to be behind the other 3 guards. I think his minutes are really going to the big men, Qvale and even Sharp as Tinks plays more of the big lineup.

I hope Cam can bounce back, he had some incredible games last year, but he's not come close to that form this year.

Matt Martin has the unique ability of making you say "What the hell was that, sit that bum down" and "What a great play, he should play more" all the span of 30 seconds.

That pretty well sums up my assessment Martin too. When he's on, he really helps the Griz. But when he's off, he really hurts. And the inconsistency is maddening--in good part because it is something that he could control, like bombing away from distances where one can barely see the backboard.

Of course, this whole team has been inconsistent, and I don't get why that is. I think you've got to lay a lot of that on the coaching.

One thing I've wondered: Is Graves really that bad that he couldn't help at guard? I've not seen him play, so I don't know. CET and Stauds have been pretty consistent lately at guard, but you never know what you're going to get when they need a spell. As we've discussed, Martin is really up and down, and Rundles and mostly down lately. Too bad they didn't develop Graves.

Are you kidding me??? Distort what facts? Martin was 1-8 from the field, 0-1 from the FT line (thus 1-9 shooting) with 5 assists, 2 turnovers, a foul and a stupid technical foul, all on the same play...Seems to me, Staudacher and CET played much better today, thus probably why they played 30+ minutes and MM had 24.

Frankly, you can't EVER admit when a Griz player plays poorly. EVER!

Sorry PR, your sugarcoating is getting old...

Hey! Did one of our coaches sneak into their huddle before Martin's last missed FT? Their last gasp looked like something out of the Griz playbook. I though Rundles had slipped on an EWU uniform.
Rundles got the shot off... if you're going to pick on someone, pick the right person.

We ain't talking about church girls...get out once inAlicia Keys chantera au Super Bowl

this team just can't seem to hit on all cylinders. hasquet has a stinker of a game at p.s.u., then martin and strait have sub-par games at eastern. but if they can get it together by the tournament, they could still fulfill our pre-season expectations.

at least they're playing the right people, by my reckoning--except for graves. this kid is athletic, hustles, plays tight defense. i'm at a loss for why he's not getting more p.t.

by the way, any reports on how the transfer and redshirts are looking--selvig, taylor, mcgillis, hurley?

Thanks to the Super Bowl, I have not been on the computer since early morning.

Anyway, I watched the GRIZ/EWU game on Altitude. I am elated we got a W in a close game finally. That game was UGLY. I for one cannot figure out this team as a whole. The only consistents are Staudacher's shooting and Qvale defensive inside presence. Yes Martin struggled today, but only one of his shots was forced, and he did a great job creating for others in the 2nd half.

I really like the consistency we are getting from Staudacher and CET. I would love to see us get Staudacher 15 open shots per game. His shot is so smooth, I love watching this kid shoot!!! :thumb:

I was very disappointed in our efforts on the boards, and very little offensive continuity. As happy as I was with offensive continuity against UNC, I am equally disappointed in it against EWU. I am also disappointed why we did not utilize Hasquet more. EWU could not match up on him defensively. I would have went to a 2 man game all day with him and Staudacher or CET.

Oh well, an ugly win is better than any loss. YES we should have beat PSU this weekend. I picked the GRIZ to go 6-2 the second half of conference play, 1-0 is looking good. This team is capable making the NCAA's, but has to find consistency on the offensive end. GO GRIZ!!!!

Too funny, BozGriz. So you think freethrows count in shooting stats and percentage? I have never heard or seen anyone, ever, say that.

Okay, then Martin was 8-9 in shooting against PSU. And for the weekend, he was 9-18. And Hasquett and Qvale were 7-17 and 5-17.

I agree, Mtgrizrule. Martin was off today (and on at PSU), but he wasn't forcing shots. He took a long 3-pointer from the top today, and it was early in the shot clock. He's a pretty good shooter on floaters when he's driving. He's also a good shooter of long 3-pointers. However, Martin made up for the shooting by playing well in the rest of his game.

68griz -- I'm curious why you think the Cat's will just blow out the Griz? In conference play, I'm not so sure the Cat's have been any more impressive than the Griz have to this point -- particularly on the road.

Looking at MSU's road games, the Cats lost at SAC (ouch), were blown out at NAU (58-78), survived a very close scare against NCol (70-67), came from behind to hold off EWU (64-57) and beaten soundly by PSU (85-96) and that was after a small rally at the end made it more respectable. It's not like MSU has been blowing out anybody on the road.

On the other hand, Montana has pretty much been in almost every game down to the bloody end, except of course, the game at MSU -- which is the only conference game UM has lost by double digits.

I'm not worried that MSU will blow UM out, but I am worried that UM could blow it at the end and drop a game they should win.
