MBBALL GRIZ - ewoo Game Thread

In each of the last two games, Dick and Kepley both missed the front ends of one and ones. That’s a potential eight points lost over two tight games.

That’s not how you play winning college basketball.

Maybe they’re a bad matchup? I blame Decuire. Kepley was terrible all night and Decuire would not take him off the floor. I don’t think he came off once until he fouled out. They needed to feed Sawyer way more than they did. Eastern was having problems defending him but we just didn’t go to him enough. Then Dick misses the front end of a one and one and that completely flips the momentum. Thompson takes a terrible 3 when it’s a two score game and they make us pay on the other end. Money was hot, just keep giving him the ball. This has been the most frustrating season I can remember. Such a high ceiling but these guys beat themselves.

I had given some thought to attending Starch Madness, but it certainly won’t be this year. I just don’t see the women making it out of day 1 and the men are so inconsistent they’ll be lucky to make the semifinals. I had such high hopes for both programs after their strong post season last year🥺

Until he screws us by missing a one and one that could’ve tied the game and instead it disrupted all the momentum we had. Yes he was great most of the night, but that was a critical mistake that cost us the game.
 
This GRIZ team is so inconsistent on both ends. Defense has to improve. Have to keep teams from driving into the paint. Interior paint defense is bad.

Worse yet, Travis said in the post game interview, "Speed kills and we don't have it!" I saw a lot of team speed early in the season. I think it's more of not maintaining good position or awareness.

If that's the case, why not give Henderson more opportunity to press the primary ball handler?

Also, Hicks is athletic and should be an elite perimeter defender. Thompson is a solid defender. Money is solid as well.

They have to figure out defensive consistency. Offensively, ball movement isn't consistent. Thompson and or Hicks have to step up their offense. Money and Sawyer need a consistent 3rd scorer.

Also, the shooters aren't getting as open. I know why too. Nobody sets good picks! That alone would improve the offense. They're afraid of stationary contact. I'm surprised more moving picks aren't being called.

Right now, this is an average Big Sky team.
 
Average at best is probably the right word. Save the profanity for another time. Did not see the game but from the comments it wasn’t pretty.

It’s easy to blame the coaches, after all the buck stops there. I will always support Travis. Why? Because he prepares these young men who wear the maroon and silver for life after basketball. Outside of Money these players will never step foot on an NBA floor. All of Travis’s players had walked away from Montana with a degree. I would venture to say very few basketball coaches in America can say that.

So what’s wrong with this years team? Well, in my humble opinion, it’s the same thing that drove Bobby Hauck out of coaching, Name Image Likeness. Hauck expanded on it so no need to revisit that scenario suffice to say collegiate sports is no longer amateur sports but play for pay.

But back to this years team. How many transfers did we bring in, 7, 8, 9? I concede last years team with 9 transfers and the championship was an anomaly. I truly believe that. The chemistry was there, this year not so much. It’s a crap shoot at best. I feel for Travis and Chris and Jay and the rest of the staff. In football you can hide your mistakes in the 90+ players, in basketball you’d better be right more often than wrong.

I hear you, but is there anyone on this team that you really count on to make FTs? Certainly not Kepley.

Not sure what Trav's fascination is with kepley. Kai Johnson he most definitely is not.
