GRIZ @ Denver televised

Sounds like Qvale has been doing well inside, double-digits and some blocks if I heard right. This makes me happy despite the Griz losing.

That's game. Denver wins. Griz still need to find some guts on the road. As impressive as our home stand was, this game was ugly.

Ugly is a nice word for the performance of the Grizzly coaches and players tonight.

I did not see the game, only listened and watched stats. It seems that only 2 guys really were factors offensively, AJ and Qvale. Nobody else had more than 4. This simply isn't going to work, even in a game where the Griz own the boards. How long can we afford to give Stauds major minutes? He has zip tonight. Maybe our depth isn't enough to warrant a change, but we got virtually nothing from the 2s and 3s tonight. :(

I was thinking the same thing about Staudacher after the first game, but then he caught fire for a game and a half and I shut my mouth, but I haven't been too impressed with him since his sophomore year. When he's on he's great, but last year he was too one-dimensional and I am hoping for a change this year. Couldn't watch, though, so it's hard to say how he moved around tonight.

Is it me or does McGillis look lost out there???

It's hard for me to criticize Jack. He does put up plenty of bricks, but his hustle and intensity more than makes up for it. When you see him play live he is very impressive even when the shots aren't dropping. I never thought he looked lost. But I couldn't watch this game, either.

I watched the game on TV. The Griz lost by letting things get out of hand in the first half, and it was just too big a hole to climb out of in the second half. But they almost did it by being patient; they just couldn't get a few shots to fall at the end that were makeable. AJ did most of the work in the 2nd half, showing a lot of poise. Kvale also is making his presence felt with good moves around the basket and rebounds and some blocks.

In the first half, they were pretty sloppy, throwing away passes and giving Denver easy shots.

They went with a big lineup at times, putting both Selvig and Qvale in at the same time, and they outrebounded Denver by quite a bit. Quite a difference from the Loyola game. Vassy Banny didn't have a lot of minutes but boarded pretty well in the time he was in there.

Stockton got more playing time than usual and I don't think he had many stats but he seemed to help add a spark in the 2nd half and kept things steady on offense. Staudacher did look lost when he was in there, with some poor defense and at least one turnover, if I recall correctly. The 2 new guys, Young and Cherry, had little impact.

Would be nice to see some other players step up. On the other hand, when the game is on the line, it is hard to argue with the idea of putting the ball in AJ's hands. Everyone knew he was going to get the ball and try to score with it, and he was still making the shots. It is amazing he has as high a FG percentage as he does, given how defenses will key on him. He has great touch to go with great moves and judgment.

the bad part is that the griz can't afford for johnson NOT to be on the floor. One injury(Johnson) and the griz season is over.

First time I got to watch the men this year, listened to a couple on the radio during the tourney. Was really excited, then VERY discouraged. AJ and Qvale looked all Big Sky.

Young couldn't stay on the floor without fouling, and neither could McGillis.

Selvig looked good when out there, just not a lot of minutes

Staudacher looked TERRIBLE! 0-2 from the floor (both 3's), 0 FT, 2 rebounds, 3 fouls, 1 TO and 1 steal in 33 minutes!!!!!! Why did Tinkle keep him in there so much?!?!?!?!???? Only AJ had more minutes, but he scored 23!

Cherry was not too good. Did some good work handling the ball, but turned it over twice on bad post-entry passes. Then gambled for steals twice, missed and the result was two easy buckets.

AJ had zero help in the back court. Taylor needs to get healthy and Cherry needs more experience so they can take minutes from Ryan when he is not hitting 3's or defenses are taking him away from the arc, because he has no other offensive game.

They really need to re-group going to Oregon and UW or this could get ugly.

I was at the game last night. DU won because their players knew exactly what their role was and what to do. Not so much for the Griz, particularly in the first half. The Griz players were constantly looking at the bench for instruction as to what to do. In the second half this was much reduced. Twice in the second half AJ looked at the bench, made palms down gesture with his hand and said "I got it" as a way to reduce the input from the bench. Also in the second half there were way fewer substitutions, this seemed to help a lot.

I don't know if in the second half the players played better, thus reducing the need for bench involvement, or if the coaches decided to let the players play. Probably a bit of both.

With the way NC is playing and NAU always being a tough game the Griz could be looking at a 5 to possibly 7 game losing streak.
