Griz "Defense"

This is or should be the topic. Was the UM defense and defensive effort good yesterday? Yes, they gave up several longer drives. However, overall the defense had a good day. Not good on the first drive, not good on the 2 back-to-back drives in 2d half, but still good overall. Kept Prukop in check. Used the d-line only for the pass rush most of the time. Kept in their lanes. Didn't lose contain. This without Derek K. Lost some receivers during scrambles and 2 trick plays. This happens, but it happened too much yesterday. That's my biggest criticism.

It happens every game you pin head! It happened against ISU, it happened against EWU. The reason it happens is exactly what I stated.... our safeties are horrible! You think Trey Young, Colt, Shillinger, Huntsburger, et al would give up that many blown coverages????? Spin that one!

It doesn't happen every game. Yes, the Griz don't have an all-american safety like those 4, all of whom played some level of professional ball after college. That doesn't mean this year's safeties are horrible. They aren't close to horrible. They are pretty good.

UM held teams to under 200 yards passing in 6 games. Under 122 in 4 games. Gave up passes over 46 yards in only 3 games. Never gave up more than 3 passing TD's (3 to Liberty, ISU and Cats). Longest Cat pass play was 46 yards yesterday.

Points per possession should be a stat....
Some defenses look better because their offense holds the ball for so long.

Give the opposing offense more chances, they're going to have a play or drive here and there.

Griz D is better than average... Not great, but definitely not shitty...

If this d can get 2 or 3 stops a half...I like our chances...

As long as you are happy getting rolled in the playoffs............then good on you.

I have a higher standard, just like the Rhodes scholar selection group.
Takin shots at someone reppin the school on a high level and hell of a football player? Hopefully the next time some drops something in your drink it's battery acid. Fuvkin freak.
Look fu*k face show me in my post where I mentioned DC? In English my post specifically states the Rhodes scholar selection group........no mention of DC in there.

Don't ever put words in my mouth again and please please please swing by and say hi this Saturday. Bring the battery acid.......I can't wait.

PR-AtlantaGriz won't be satisfied until every starter gets drafted.

I don't care if we win games 10-7 or 57-55.

A win is a win and they don't award the victory to the team that gains the most yards.

No one is arguing about winning games....the discussion is about how "great" the Griz defense played....
Your post is accurate if you take the "great" out of it.

I'm lost...is someone arguing with themselves, or is cataholic using another screen name in here?

Point is: when we lose, eGriz bitches about why/how we lost. When we win, we bitch about how we won. Just doesn't make sense.

The box score was interesting:
First downs: Griz 25, cats 23.
Rushing: Griz 48-184, cats 37-190.
Passing: Griz 353, cats 313.
Comp-Att-Int: Griz 23-39-1, cats 22-40-1.
Return Yds: Griz 23, cats 19.
Punts: Griz 5-39.8, cats 5-42.6.
Fumbles-Lost: Griz 0-0, cats 3-1.
Penalties-Yds.: Griz 8-99, cats 13-120.
TOP: Griz 28:16, cats 31:44.

Pretty close. cats shot themselves in the foot with penalties, produced 34 less yards offensively, their run defense was better than ours despite the Griz having 11 more runs than the cats, and the cats with the ball three and a half min. longer. They shut us out in the red zone FOUR TIMES. All the hype about how bad the cat D was supposed to be, and the Griz D was a LITTLE better, with the one stat that mattered, 54-35.The Griz D was as good as it had to be, no more, no less.

Come on. Their run defense was "better" because for about a quarter and a half they KNEW what we were going to do with the ball. When they DIDN'T know, their run defense wasn't so good.

Welcome back Stubbins. The voice of reason has returned..... I'll leave the descriptive opinions concerning the Griz D to the rest of you. The terms great, average and shitty are somewhat irrelevant. Here's the Griz D's national ranking according to fcsinsider.com-

Total Yards 4,277 Rank 75
Passing Yards 2,178 Rank 43
Rushing Yards 2,099 Rank 88
Points Per Game 24.2 Rank 49
Yards Per Game 389 Rank 68
TDs Given Up 34 Rank 61
FGs Given Up 8 Rank 40

This D certainly isn't Eastern or MSU but it isn't going to make anyone forget NDSU's D of the last few seasons....

I love it! Alpha1 & myself make posts stating that our defense is average AT BEST, are slammed by the legion-of-lemmings who obviously swill way too much grape Kool-Aid, then the national stats are presented showing just how pedestrian our defense really is. Ha Ha Ha ha! Great stuff, Stubbins! You can just picture the sphincters puckering about now!

Not sure anyone on here has claimed the defense is great....most freely admit that there are a few weaknesses that are a problem, but overall, it'll suffice.

The main point is that I don't think those numbers are reflective of just an average defense. Griz opponents probably average 66% more possessions in a game than they normally do. It would seem to me that even an average offense can muster a good drive a quarter of the time...Therefore, more opportunities equal more chances at stringing something together...ie, more yards and more points. That's not necessarily all on the defense, which is a byproduct of the philosophy of this staff(which I love, just wish he'd still go for it on 4th downs more.)
Total numbers don't tell the whole story....

Where did you or Alpha say the defense was "average"?

UM is 20th in 3d down defense, 29th in 4th down defense, 5th in sacks, 7th in fumbles recovered, 13th in turnovers gained, 28th in interceptions, 20th in blocked kicks, 33d in red zone defense, 40th in turnover margin, and good in defensive TD's (but I can't get the stat to come up). Those stats are hardly average; they are very good, and important.

MSU is the the 3d leading offense in the country, in terms of Total Offense. UM's defense handled the Cats' offense just fine, keeping them below their season scoring average and TO average. A nice defensive effort.

You guys just cherry-pick your stats, and even those don't support your views.

The REAL issue to me is the run defense.....I don't really think anybody can "spin" away that stat. Looking at how the playoff bracket breaks for the Griz, they will have to deal with that weakness sooner rather then later IMO. Maybe Gus and the O can compensate but the first job of any D is to stop the run....

I think that's everyone's concern....

NDSU gives up 3.75 per rush. UM gives up 4.0 per rush. 10 teams in the top 50 of rushing defense give up more than 4 yards per carry. I think 7 playoff teams averaged giving up less than 4 yards per carry.
