Griz/cats

We all wish they rebounded better, but when you play a ZONE, you give up rebounding position, simple as that. All in all, a great effort by the Griz. Players are accpeting their roles and this team seems to be able to focus one game at a time. It is high time some jackwipes on this board give Tinkle some credit, he has OWNED Huse in every way possible. He has out recruited him, out coached him, and frankly, has far more class that Brad does.

I was at the game, and I was impressed by the Griz in many areas. They've come a long ways. They played with a lot of poise, something they didn't have a month or two ago. They were making an extra pass to find the open guy. They were working it inside and, when that wasn't open, kicking it back out for a good look at a 3. It wasn't long ago we were all complaining about how they were just coming down and immediately heaving up 3s. So we've got to give Tinkle credit for getting that under control. Their defense looked good, and they are helping each other on D. Hasquet and Stauds had some silly fouls, but at least there were few uncontested shots. One thing that was interesting was how AJ sort of seemed to lay back and not push it for much of the first part of the game. He even had a lot of turnovers. But he just dominated the last quarter of the game. And if you watch him, he's not relaxing on defense to catch his wind.

I didn't, by the way, see any of the bad behavior from Bobcat fans that some people here talk about. In fact, there was a Griz fan behind the Griz bench who was holding up a "poor Bobcat etc" sign toward the end of the game who seemed to be trying to rub it in and aggravate people, but not much came of it.

There was plenty of bad behavior from some Cat fans. It started in the first seconds of the game, when there was a minor confrontation on the edge of the lower Griz section. A Griz family with younger kids left the section within minutes, complaining about all of the swearing from the Cat student section. At halftime, there were some bad and inappropriate things yelled at the UM coaches and players as they left the court (between the corners of the stands). In the second half, there was so much stuff being thrown into the lower Griz section, including at the big Griz signs, that security had to be called. Multiple Griz fans, including my son and I, were hit with smaller things, including coins. Several Griz fans were pointing out the throwers for security. There were several Cat fans getting into it with a group of about a half dozen Griz coeds in the second half. The police went into the Cat student section about a half dozen rows above the Griz section at one point, but I don't know if that had anything to do with Griz fans. A bigger UM college guy appeared to intervene a bit. On the other hand, the vast majority of the Cat students were fine and even nice.

Like at the JMU game, it's not helpful to have the home team's student section right next to the opposing team's section.

I don't even know why you were there. That section the griz fans were in is part of the student section. You guys should at least be in one of the sections behind the rims.

i watched the game on the internet in the comfort of my home, about 1000 miles as the crow flies from those rowdy cat fans eating crow, and i came to two conclusions.

first, what a boring game! you have to be a real fan of either team to have endured that level of tedium for 40 minutes. only one fast break the entire night--by johnson on the feed from e.t.--and only one exceptional athletic move, by johnson. those two plays aside this looked like two cheapskates fighting for 40 minutes over a restaurant bill. no wonder attendance has dropped at our games. i felt cheated just watching it, let alone paying to see it. can't fun and excitement be part of the game of basketball?

and second, lest we get too excited, let's remember, montana state is a terrible team. just awful. little talent, meager post presence, inability to make free throws--or field goals, for that matter. in what i would imagine to be the two biggest games of their season--griz home, griz away--they just stunk it up. in front of 6000 fans, they shoot 14% over the critical start of the second half, hardly any way to build fan support for a program. it's testimony to the low talent level of both teams that a junior college player basically shunned by the pac 10 could come in and be by far the best player on either team. i worry about our friend mr. huse, whom i like and have respected since his days as an assistant with us. at least tinks can recruit, and is about to bring in several good athletes to complement johnson next year. i don't see anywhere near the same talent level in bozeman.

i'd love to see the griz go all the way, of course, but it wouldn't break my heart to see portland state return either. at least they'd have a quality win over gonzaga under their belt, and might escape that 16th seed guilloutine. we wouldn't--and shouldn't.

There is NO DOUBT that msu needs to get the BSTV thing figured out, as well as their live stat feature. It certainly doesn't represent an engineering school well when every other team in the conference has no trouble getting a good feed to BSTV and msu gets them nothing or an acid-trip-video.

I thought holding up the "Bobcats lose everything," or whatever it said, at the beginning of the game was a bit much.

ya those guys were a little much. i'm not going to be like everettegriz and act like we don't have classless fans because we do. he claimed that he will not attend a game in bozeman because of how he has been treated here, and pointed out that it never happens in missoula. well guess what, if these guys watch games in missoula, which i'm sure they do, then it happens in missoula. the signs didn't really bother me. a little disrespectful but whatever...it's a rivalry. i had the misfortune of sitting right next to the griz section and here's what bothered me from these guys. first, during a moment of silence for finburg, this clown had the nerve to say f##k finburg, and f##k the cats! completely classless and disrespectful. then with about 4 minutes to go in the game he starts asking guys if they want to go outside and get their ass kicked like our basketball team. i'll give him a pass on this one too because there was a lot of trash talked back and forth from these guys and cat fans. but the comment about finny really made me mad. and i get madder when i hear people being so ignorant, and acting like this sort of thing never happens in missoula. i've said this 1000 times, it happens everywhere. by the way, thought the griz played a hell of a game, and i think you guys got the big sky POY on your squad.

Thanks, ilovethecats, for your very reasonable comments. There are a**holes on both sides of this rivalry, and I get just as sick of the Griz idiots (perhaps more so) as I do the Cat idiots. Then there are folks like you and me who simply enjoy rooting for 'our' team and rooting against the 'other' team. Thanks for reminding me of that fact.

If someone said that during the moment of silence for Finny, then shame on them. There are not many people I like better than that guy. He is in the fight of his life, and we all need to remember Finny in our prayers, both Cats and Griz alike.

Hey, how did I get into this argument? All I said was that it's embarrassing for an engineering school to be unable to get a quality video feed to BigSkyTV.

So the Cat steal and big dunk doesn't count as a fast break? It was probably the most exciting and crowd pleasing play for the Cat fans.

I thought the game was very exciting.

Cat22 doesn't appear to know that the Cat student section also extends over to the area on top of the opposing team's section (where player, student tickets and other tickets are).

I have my doubts about the supposed F F comment, as anyone who young and stupid enough to say that, probably wouldn't know or have heard or remembered Finberg's name).

trust me, it was said. and he didn't know finny. heard him ask who is finburg, and someone told him he used to play for the cats. that's when he said, oh eff finburg...eff the cats. like i said, you won't hear me turn this into a "your fans are classless, and ours are perfect" argument. i have seen, and saw plenty of cat fans being jackasses just last night. my point is that it's the dumbest thing in the world to say it doesn't happen at both places. and i'm all for griz fans hating the cats and cat fans hating the griz. hell, it's a rivalry. but to take a guy who is battling for his life, and say f-u just because he is a cat alum is over the top in my opinion. and all that said, once again your team seems to have our number. lead the whole way yesterday and i gotta say that was the best defensive team the cats have played in the conference so far. whether you were manning up, or playing zone the guys were really moving. who knows, maybe we can meet up one more time this season. :thumb:

Hey now, you did take a 1 point lead there for a few seconds. Chin up, man, you guys didn't lose everything, your boys totally kicked our ass at the half-time hot wing eating contest. Now THAT stings.

I second the comments about how much better the MSU crowd was than in years past. I went to both games and had a great time jawing with 'Cat fans who sat around us. No trash talk. Everybody cheered for their respective team and no one got too nasty when things weren't going his way.

There was a lot less hype, though. I've been to "the Brick" when the MSU players would run onto the court through the dark with rock music playing and then appear in a spotlight. They don't do that anymore, I guess. They used to hand out free pizza's to the loudest student section. Members of the football team used to stand in front of the Griz section at half time and jabber about how they were going to kick the Griz' asses come fall. I didn't see or hear any of that.
We had a good time, and I wouldn't have been upset about anything other than the outcome and the freaking media time outs had the Griz lost, which is the way it should be.

:D

And FWIW, yes it happens at both schools, mostly by drunk SOBs who couldn't tell you the final score as they were leaving the fieldhouse. 95% of both fan bases are terrific. Then, there's that other five percent.....

What the hell are you talking about? My post was not intended as anything but discussion. I know damn well where the student section is. Hence my comment about why I didn't know why they would put you there. I understand maybe putting you there because it's behind the opposing bench, but it's still the MSU student section. You apparently lack reading comprehension, as does GB1. But that's no surprise.
I had no real problem with you sitting there, it just seemed kind of odd putting you guys right in the middle of the student section.

Pretty much the coolest thing I've heard all day.

35-3

Cat22, this is what you said originally:

"I don't even know why you were there. That section the griz fans were in is part of the student section."

You said nothing about having been put there.

You said the area where the Griz fans were was "part of the student section". It was not part of the student section; it was the Griz section (at least for this game). The student section started above the Griz section, and there was a sign indicating where the student section started. The main part of the student section was beside the Griz section.

If you meant to say something different, then articulate what you meant. Don't expect us to read your mind. Talk about being unable to read. I think it's funny how you make an unarticulate post, and then come back questioning our reading ability.

OK Einstein, tell me what I didn't comprehend..... this oughta be good.
