Martin has hit some huge shots, but he is a liability on defense. He needs to quit getting beat on the drive.

When our guards get beat on the drive, it always looks a little worse than other teams because NOBODY EVER STEPS INTO THE LANE TO CUT THE DAMN GUY OFF!!!! I've never in my life seen a team worse at that simple help defense principle than the Griz. Tinks needs to preach that and pull guys until it starts happening. I really don't think Martin is any worse on defense than most of the guards we play and I will take his in your face defense any day as a small trade off for getting blown by on occasion. It would just be nice to see somebody step in and help him out once before he graduates. :twocents:
This has been a problem. I think Sharp's inside play and energy will help address this.

One thing the Griz seemed to do differently this game: If they got a steal or a rebound, they looked to push the ball up the court to get a transition basket .... they got some easy baskets, and really took the wind out of the Cat sails at times....

One of the better defensive efforts ... nice to see Vanderjagt get a little playing time; he clogs things up inside on defensive end, tho he's no offensive threat ... Sharp played out of his mind ... 3 pt percentage was outstanding, partly because they were looking more to get the ball inside, then kicking it back out to open shooters .... Stauds sure has become a reliable shooter... Martin--another heart-stopping game ... Strait--steady... Hasquet seemed more aggressive than usual in terms of attacking inside; good time to see it .... bad sign: too many players are still struggling at the free throw line; can't they get that figured out?

looking like there could be a real logjam at the top of the standings at the end of conference play...

I noticed there was a point where Rundles was supposed to be guarding someone, Davis I think, and he took his eye off him and Davis got under the basket for a wide open pass and easy basket. The next time play stopped Rundles was out of the game--boom! And he might not have played any more after that. He sure looked out of sorts tonight. Anyone know what's going on? He doesn't seem to have his head in the games lately. Or maybe his confidence is shaken.

A Great win, great offensive balance in terms of inside/outside and even point distribution. Wayne mentioned a few weeks ago they have been working on quickening the pace on offense yet still under control. They executed that to perfection tonight. CET is most definitely the PG we need. Tonight we showed we have depth with Sharp and Vanderjagt. Sharp needs to get motivated like that every game. :thumb: As for Vanderjagt, he did not get a shot, but I love someone clogging the lane. I really would use him and Qvale often at Center.

We have a very solid 9 man rotation. I still would love to see Graves in there to make for a 10 man rotation. I think Sharp will see more time, against smaller teams upfront he sees his minutes. Against bigger lineups Qvale sees more minutes. Sharp is certainly a much better offensive option than Qvale, but Qvale leads the conference in blocks.

Every game I become more and more impressed by Staudacher. Seriously, is there a better perimeter shooter in this conference? Even more impressive is his shot selection. Leaving Stauds and Martin open from 3 may be the best 3 pt combo in the conference. (The key word is open). It looks as if this team is starting to jell and carry out coaching game plans.

Defensively CET is willing to accept guarding the quickest guard and prides himself in that challenge. As a team we need to improve on help defense, which by the way has been something Rundles has done well this year. He draws a few charges per game. Speaking of Rundles, if he finds his game, this team will be tougher and more consistent than now. Nobody on this team has any clue how to get the Cam of old back. Everything appears to be falling into place, I have to believe Cam will fall into place by seasons end too.

Improved help defense and ft shooting are the 2 biggest things this team has to get better at. I believe it will happen. :thumb:

Great shot selection tonight and we made our free throws. Sharp played great. He is good and quite capable of more nights like tonight. Margin of victory would have been much larger if we could have prevented them from offensive rebounds and second shots.

Incredible game for Sharp-y!. If we could play Sharp on offense and Kvale on defense, we'd be in business. Kvale's offense and rebounding is abyssmal and Sharp showed what he can offer tonight in a big way. At the end of the game, Tinks was subbing in Martin for offense and Sharp for defense. We might start seeing more in this regard with Kvale and Sharp. Martin and Sharp on Offense, Rundles and Kvale on defense. We have some options and that is great.

Rundles on defense? It is better than his offense, but I would still rather have any of the other guards on the floor when it comes to defense. Rundles completely loses track of his man too much.

What a fun game to be at, just wish I would've grabbed one of those "Beat State" shirts...

I think Sharp's play 2nite might push him into getting a lot more time, probably as a starter. His defense really helped in the low post and on the edges, he provides a great spark too. I like his hustle and passion on the court.

It's cool to see other guys starting to come into their own, like Staudacher and Ceylon. Both played really well.

Matt Martin hit some key threes to keep the cats down. It looks to me that he needs to work on his defense at the top of the court though, the cats PGs would just dart past a few times.

And, it was a very well coached game! Good win Griz!

Grizatwork, you need to watch the game more carefully (or were you even watching).

I don't understand how you could say this, which you said before halftime: "Matt Martin can drive me nuts. He can hit some clutch shots, but then take some bad ones. I am not overly impressed with his defense. He has let Durham take him on the dribble on more than one occasion."

Durham had 2 points at halftime, and it was a jumper not a lay-in. Martin wasn't getting beat off the dribble. His man may have made it into the paint, but not to the hoop, 3 times the whole game. Also, I assume you realized that we were playing zone much of the game.

Sharp, Strait and Hasquett played well, Stauds shot well, and CET had a solid game, but for a critical 6-minute period from 12.5 to 6.5 minutes, Martin carried the team. During this time, in which MSU made a series of mini runs, UM scored 17 points. Martin scored or made the assist on 16 of them, and scored 11. He hit 3 3-pointers, had a lay-in, had 3 assists, and had 2 steals. During this time, UM had 3 turnovers, none by Martin. The UM lead varied from 10 down to 4 during this time.

12:33 - Martin 3-pointer
12:14 - Martin steal
11:08 -Martin lay-in
? -Sharp freethrow
9:15 -Martin 3
7:52 -Martin 3
7:00 -Martin assist to Strait for 2 (this was a beautiful set up and feed as the clock ran down)
6:40 -Martin assist to Stauds for 3
6:27 -Martin steal

The later attempted behind-the-back pass in transition, after his steal, was done to give some of you Martin-complainers something to complain about.

With Staudacher and Martin we are fine at the 2 spot. As for the 1 spot, CET is getting better every game. This position can only get better, Rundles cannot get much worse with his ability.

Speaking of Martin and Staudacher, go check out their 3 pt percentage at montanagrizzlies.com. BTW, the team is officially at 40% from 3 land this year. That is quite a feat. Can someone remind me who said early in the season or even preseason that this team would hit a near 40% clip this year? (I will leave that research to the dedicated researchers here.) Hard to fathom Staudacher with 2 more years. Can he become the best 3 point shooters in school history? My bet is yes!!! He is already light years ahead of most shooters that have been through here. He is also one of the few that knows what is a good shot and what is a bad one. That is difficult to coach in a perimeter bomber. :thumb:

Never mind, in case anyone doubted who said it. Here it is.

I will add to this, being I ran short on time at work. With the likes of Martin, Staudacher, Rundles, and Hasquet on the court. The paint will open up ALOT for the likes of Strait and Qvale, or anyone playing the post. That is not an luxury Strait has enjoyed in the past. Double teaming Strait with 2 to 4 deadly outside 3 shooters will be impossible for the opposition. If we play team ball this year, I will not be surprised if we hit 40% from 3 this year. I do know we will not have as many early season perimeter struggles this year. Those games will be few and far between this year. Offensively, oppenents defenses will have much trouble against the GRIZ. Our defense can only be better this year. Hard to imagine much worse defensive inconsistency this year.

Getting rid of players that did not care last year will be addition by subtraction. Of the departed, only Chavez and Ellis cared to be here last year. Swift's impatience hampered him. Dloughy's wanting to graduate effected his desire to be the MATT of the prior 3 years. As for Mayes, he proved he too wanted to be here, but had to get through so much off the court problems, he could not contribute like he was capable of. When he did contribute I honestly felt much tension with Swift and Dloughy. Finally Gus Chase, nothing bad to say about Gus, just think he was an odd man out, which had to be frustrating for him.

Also to add, the likes of McGillis, Taylor, and Hurley will intensify practices much more. 2 of 3 are BigSky Conference starters most anywhere. We have not had this kind of practice luxury recently, if ever. This years regulars will be practicing against them every practice. Both are talented enough to prepare for any teams best perimeter player. Also practicing against height will be more or a challenge this year than actual games will be.

All going well for the GRIZ, now if we can comfortably fill the 3 spot this year, all is well in GRIZ BASKETBALL !!!!

First off it was a great game by the Griz last night, keep up the good work. 4 out of the next 6 at home is great. pick up at least a split on the road and we will be in great shape.

I really like the big line up since going to it a few games back. sorry to see Qvale go down with the ankle injury but Sharp is more than capable of contributing and he showed that.

If I was Tinkle stick with what is working. The seven or so guys he used in the second half is what he needs to do. Jordan, Andrew, CET, Stauds, Sharp as starters. Qvale when he gets back and Martin coming off the bench. Some posters that are saying use Vanderjagt what are they watching. He is so lost out there. Sure he gave Sharp and Strait a breather but he is so overmatched. Someone said in this post he will be good for his interior defense, the guy is horrible spends his time out on the wing or top of key, looks afraid to get bumped doesn't challenge anything. He along with Rundles in my mind are huge liablilites to this team. Rundles is in the biggest sophmore slump I have ever seen. Throws the ball away then is slow on defense getting back.

Stick with your seven as much as possible. Best of luck the rest of the season Griz.

I saw progress by Dave V. last night. He had 2 steals and played well on defense (we disagree there). He did have a turnover on a bad pass but he looks to be making progress in terms of understanding the offense and defense. He also looks to be making progress in terms of developing some muscle tone. This guy is a true soph and I think he's going to be OK. :twocents:

Yes he is a true sophmore who made the biggest mistake in his college career of not reshirting last season. Could have made a huge difference for him. You said you see progress in him, the only progress I see is he actually got in a game and the only reason he got in the game is we are down a big man (true freshman might I add) and our other bigs needed a breather. He was not in there long if you noticed. He did actually show in the stat book which is progress I guess for him. Next season Dave V is going to be in the same place as he has the first two seasons of his career, at the end of the bench. With Sharp, Hasquet, Qvale, Selvig, and the newcomers like Ward coming in that are big guys and not to mention McGillis. All much more gifted than he is at this stage. I wish Dave well but I just don't think he will see much time here as a Griz. Just too much depth and talent that are seeing the floor before him.

I see your point. The post positions will be strongly manned with Sharp, Qvale and Hasquet (who also will see some time at the 3 when McGillis is not in.) Selvig will likely play a bunch too. This post strength should provide a great opportunity for Ward to redshirt, which I hope he does along with Stockton since CET and Taylor look to have the point position nicely taken care of.

We played both zone and man to man. When we were in zone, Carlos Taylor was able to score some open shots in the second half. Toward the end of the first half, Durham did beat Martin off the dribble at least twice. If Durham did not score, then it forced our big men out of position and allowed the cats better offensive rebounding in the first half.

I think that Martin played a great second half. He can show flashes of brilliance and without him, that is a much closer game last night and we might even lose. It is my opinion (yes opinion), that defense is not his strong suit. I feel like he is overmatched against against true point guards and once dribble penetration is allowed, it puts tremendous strain on your whole defensive strategy.

It was not a personal attack. I don't even know the kid. I was just making an observation.
