First time in awhile for a "doubleheader" venue Griz/Cat weekend. Women on Sat. afternoon and the men this Sat. night, both in Bozeman. What's the word on the outcome of these two games?

I see the Lady Griz facing a tough Lady Cat team in a game that will be hard to win. As we've seen the Men can play up to or down to many levels and this game will be a challenge for them as well. Hard to keep momentum in the midst of a two games in two weeks stretch. Based on the light activity on this board it's hard to keep the fans' interest as well.

Let's get some banter going on these upcoming big games. I'm tired of reading about which O-Lineman the football team might be getting next year.

This is the second year in a row for the Griz Cat double headers. Evidently, it worked well last year to do it again this year.

Both games are going to be very tough, and I believe home court will rule this week with Cats winning both, but both be very close.

For Griz: AJ will have to be his normal self, Qvale will need to step it up more, and hope Will Cherry could reek havoc on defense and make most of his freethrows. Actually, need more than just AJ to hit most of their freethrows.

For Lady Griz: Last week they played the team with the best offense and worst defense and won at home. This time they are playing the Cats which have the second best offense and second worst defense in the league, but it will be at the Cat's place and the Lady Griz haven't won on the road yet this year. Would be a good time for Lady Griz to end the road blues this year. Need to play their normal defense and be consistent on offense, plus don't turn it over at the end of the game.

I'd be really surprised if the Cats can pull off the sweep Sat. It just depends on wich team(s) show up. For the Cat men to win they will have to rebound better than they have been. Both Should be good games.

I expect the Griz to sweep the Cats this weekend. The lady cats haven't been able to put teams away and have been choking some close games.

The men's team does not have the inside presence beat the Griz who seem to be getting excellent play from Cherry and AJ

With your description of the Lady Bobcats you've described the men Griz perfectly. I wouldn't call them chokers but definitely have an inability to put teams away on the road and end up losing. As far as the highest probably event I would say a split and just slightly less likely would be the home team winning and the road team winning being the least likely event. Of course I want to be wrong here.

Lady Griz who knows, depends on PG play. If Shaunte doesn't dribble the ball for 20 seconds of the shot clock the ladies have a chnce. The men will beat the cats if Tinkle plays Selvig and Qvale together because the cats cannot defend that combo.

This break down a little more what GB1 is saying would be how the Lady Griz handle the press as they've been very suceptible to presses and then are in a panic mod on half court offense after being pressed. I hope they spent a lot on it in practice this week.

Go Griz and Lady Griz

I expect the Lady Griz to lose to the Cats,we are too young and with the losses to injuries do not have enough depth. Scoring will be a problem and I see the Cats winning by about a dozen. On the men's side,I do not see a close game but rather which team puts together two good halves of basketball. I believe the Griz are much more capable of doing this than the Cats. Look for a breakout game from one of our subs, scoring in double figures,as the Cats try to shutdown AJ and Qvale and one of our role players picks up the slack. Griz win by fifteen with a dominant second half.

Yeah, biggest problem for the ladies right now is picking up their dribble. I've lost count of how many turnovers there have been because of it. And it's not all Shaunte...I've seen almost every player pick up their dribble this year and get in trouble for it. It also wouldn't hurt if they improved their shooting and started to get some more confidence in that area (it's not like they can't shoot because of mechanics or skill level...aren't they around 76% or so as a team for free throws?) Hard game to predict, it will come down to how the guards play on each side, I think.

I like what improvements I have seen from the Griz men this year. I would say I would favor them this weekend from what little I have seen of MSU, but it is a road game so.........

Hey, who here will be at the game in Bozo? And is there a section for the away team? I have always just bought the best tix I could.

Shaunte is the poorest PG in LG history, plain and simple fact. The loss of Ferda is HUGE. Shaunte really should be a backup PG, her assist-to-turnover ratio is pathetic.

It may seem that way, but for the record she is currently 5th best in the BSC:

ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO Cl GP Assists Avg T-Overs Avg Ratio
1. HUNTINGTON, Jessica-EWU SR 17 70 4.1 42 2.5 1.7
2. KOSHIYAMA-DIAZ, Tika-SAC JR 16 74 4.6 46 2.9 1.6
3. SCHNIBBE, Tonya-WSU SR 18 116 6.4 78 4.3 1.5
4. FAUCHER, Claire-PSU SR 17 117 6.9 81 4.8 1.4
5. NANCE-JOHNSON, S.-UM SR 16 73 4.6 51 3.2 1.4
6. VIDEBECK,Andrea-ISU SR 17 69 4.1 60 3.5 1.2
7. TONEY, Vickie-NAU JR 18 79 4.4 72 4.0 1.1

as far as all-time Montana goes this year she has a better A-T/o ratio (1.43) than Skyla Sisco did for her career (1.39):

ASSISTS
1. Brooklynn Lorenzen, 2000-04 . . . . . . 701
2. Mandy Morales, 2005-09 . . . . . . . . . . 587
Skyla Sisco, 1994-98. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 587

TURNOVERS
1. Skyla Sisco, 1994-98. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 422

So maybe she isn't the worst ever.

In comparison to Shante's 1.4 assist to turnover ratio, no one else on the team has a ratio of better than .9.

By comparison, Morales' ratio was 1.6 last year. In prior years, Morales' was 1.9, 2.1 and 1.2.

On the UM men's team, only Staudacher is above 1.4. Cherry, AJ, Stockton and Taylor are: 1.1 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4.

I do agree that Shaunte is certainly not the best point guard for the Lady Griz ( I am not going to say she is the worst though). But, using the assist to turnover ratio as a defense for how bad she is is just pathetic. Faucher is one of the best point guards in the big sky ever but her assist to turnover ratio is also not that great. She does turn the ball over a lot but most of those turnovers are from trying to create plays that sometime do not work and not exactly her fault. Faucher is not the Big Sky Conference leader in Assists. I would have say the same for Mandy, but she wasn't as good of a passer as Faucher.

What hurts Shaunte is she doesn't play under control well enough and isn't aggressive against the press. She is athletic enough to get it down but she doesn't. maybe it is a confidence thing. I have seen some improvement from her this year, and particularly against Sac St (not enough to make other teams to discontinue the game plan of full court press, unfortunately).

Never seen as many teams attempt to full court press the Lady Griz like this year, and that is because of the Lady Griz's lack of a good ball handling point guard that can play under control. Last year it took a much more athletic and physical team like Pittsburgh to be able to do it. No Big Sky conference was able to. But this year they can and it has been affective.

Of course, maybe all the Big Sky teams watched the Lady Griz - Pittsburgh game last year and decided that is the way to beat them. Add that to the fact that lady Griz would be using inexperienced point guards. I actually expect the same thing to happen next year.

But layoff the assist to turnover ratio. it is an overrated statistic anyway. It is a good stat only when used with conjunction with the number of assists. Get as many assists as you can but keep assist to turnover ratio over 1.
