Griz Cat weekend

It was the other way around in the 70's. Basketball was king and football was the ugly step sister for griz fans. LK needs some solid wins to get the fan base reestablished.

MSU did have a nice opening weekend, but they have to get a tough conference win before they get any respect from me.

I gave MSU a little bit of credit :wink:

Actually I graduated from MSU, so I'm actually pretty excited that they pulled out a couple wins. I've just always liked the UM basketball programs and going to Bozeman didn't change my mind (although football is a different story).

Howevah, the numbers guy inside of me just won't buy into the Bobcats until they win a couple tough games. I stand behind the Griz, but they've done a pretty good job of disappointing me the last couple of seasons, so I don't really put too much stock in them either. I think they have the weapons, but I'm not suprised when they drop games they should win.

My two points about MSU this year:

1) They didn't look very good coming in, and they haven't done anything to change my mind, yet.

2) Durham has played suprisingly well. But I can think of 10-15 guards out of Montana in the past couple of years who could've done well. Unfortunately, without a scholarship, they don't see themselves playing as freshman. I haven't said Casey is playing because of his dad, I'm saying he found an opportunity because of his dad.

At this point the Sky belongs to whoever wants it - except ISU - Sac State played tough on what might be the most difficult road trip of the year. If the Griz had blown out WSU I would say it was theirs to lose, but at this point I don't think there is much difference between all the teams (except ISU, which is really, really bad), so MSU deserves as much respect as any BSC team. Maybe this weekend will change things.

Of course next year ISU will dominate the league, coming in at least 3rd. :lol:

My 3 reasons why the Griz need to win this weekend:

1) Set themselves up for the best start a Griz team has had since 1997.

2) 1000 points is sweeter when it comes in a win.

3) Back up my no respect talk just like last weekend.

Misssoulian has promised to put an article in the paper on Saturday if it is not too cold. If you have not seen the griz play you will be surprized at the amount of playing time for the two freshmen Matt Martin and Andrew Strait 6-8 230 from Yakima. The attendance during football was around 3000. With all of the Missoulian publicity, I would assume this will increase, football over, conference game, MSU. Attendance Guess 4567. Griz are fun to watch when they get their D into high speed. LK defense creates more pressure outside than we have seen in the recent past. LK working on inside D Griz by 12.

We need to win because Casey Durham should not be playing college basketball!

I think this kid is going to surprise you by the time he is a Senior. I thought same thing coming into this year but he definately has shown me that he belongs at this level. Just need to 'reign' in his 3 point shooting a little.

Montana's non-conference schedule was ranked 107th in the nation. That's 200 spots better than the Cats. So YES, the Cats schedule was weak, and they ended up with the same record.

You have to look into the games, you can't just talk about wins and losses this early in the season. Teams play well at times and bad at others. Weber had a bad game against MSU. Here's proof:

WSU shot 40% while MSU shot 50%. WSU shot 30% from 3 while MSU was 40%. Here'e the big one, MSU only had 5 turnovers while WSU had 13. If WSU would have showed up in the 1st half, it would have been a different story. They shot 27% and 18% from 3. You can't win playing like that. And oh yeah, MSU only had a 7 point lead after WSU played a terrible half. Now take a look at how WSU played against UM.

WSU shot 44% and 42% from 3. They only had 5 TO's, none in the first half. Weber came out and played like a team that couldn't afford a third straight loss to start out conference. Montana played a decent game, they just got beat by a team that was having a great game. If you would have seen the game you would know that UM had multiple chances to take the lead in the 2nd half, not exactly what I would call an ass-kicking.

As Durham has reminded this team (and Eastern Proved last year), once it gets to conference you can throw out that non-conference record in Basketball. What matters is what you do in conference/conference tournament. Cats are already 2-0 on the road and I like their chances this week to go 3-0 on the road which will put them in the drivers seat. We did the same thing 3 years ago as well. I have watched MSU the last 2-3 games and they are improving with each game (more team oriented and less 3 point bombing). Moss/Beye are now starting to provide an inside punch to go with our great backcourt. It should be a good game, but you can't compare game to game in the Big Sky Conference. Some teams are going to have hot shooting nights and some games they aren't. To compare how MSU played against Weber and then Montana playing against Weber doesn't really tell me anything. Its how teams match up and how they execute on a given night.

I was one that was harping on the MSU play/Durham ... .but I also gave him credit these past 2 weeks on improvements I have seen on reigning in the quick 3 point shooting as well as going inside. One thing MSU does play REALLY well is DEFENSE. So they should be in EVERY game this year.

If your from out of town the paper tells us that the cats will start 4 J.C. transfers and Nick Dissly of Bozeman. Larry Krystkowiak is starting one freshman and considering another. Nobody is expecting any atmosphere. They say because students out of town. Lot more to it than that. But this game could begin to change some of that

Griz need to win because its a league game,MSU is no good, Coach K has a shot at the league title-must win at home+losing to a team with a name like Bobcat is a disgrace.

Ballhog, don't you think losing to a team called STATE (in some circles) is even worse?
