Griz Cage Camps

Hey all, the GRIZ basketball camps are going on in June and July. I believe the men start their camp this weekend with the HS team camp. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to check out the team camp and give us an update on a few of the HS teams from the region, or any players that may stand out? Also their big camp is June 29 through July 2nd. This the week the GRIZ scrimmage in the evenings at the aux gym after camp wraps for the day. They scrimmage every evening usually. Usually the majority of the team is in town that week. I would really appreciate someone swinging by and provide us some 411 on what they see.

I also would love some updates on the Lady GRIZ too. Here is their camp schedule.

2009 Camp Dates
Team Camp: June 14-16 (completed grades 6-11)
Overnight Camp: June 22-25 (completed grades 5-11)

I hope someone can do this. If I were in Missoula, I would do it. I really am jonesing for both GRIZ basketball and football right now.

i'm witcha, grizrule. seems since the end of the season the men's basketball program has been going through a real metamorphisis--new assistant, new signee or signees, possible players leaving--yet we're getting scant information. worse, maybe nobody gives a damn, my dear.

as for the women, everything is ship-shape as always. recruiting is completed for this year, and the roster at montanagrizzlies.com has been updated. the loss of tinkle has been offset by rumors that possibly as many as five top montana players will be joining the program next year, to go with this year's stellar class. (scroll down one story to get mslacat's latest update on next year's class http://mslacat.wordpress.com/

meantime, i'd take better than even money that the ladies will meet up with josyln again, likely at stanford, in the first round of a future ncaa tournament. i don't know if we'll have the size to compete, but we'll sure have some talent and lots of depth, with a few quick point guards to run the show. should be fun.

Lady Griz Camp went well. Jordan Sullivan and Tory Hill won MVP awards. Jordan is tough around the hoop, very feisty, she gave the Lady Griz fits in the camp all-star game. Derek Selvig's little sister took the Defensive Player award....Best player, in my opinion, was Shanae Gilham from Browning, will be a sophomore. She's an absolute monster, good size, can play any spot on the floor, very strong, can shoot very well and rebounds. Her defense needs work. ..we better lock her up soon because she will definitely get looks from big programs.

A 6-3 guard from Iowa named Dau Jok will be making the trip to attend the grizzly Elite Camp this week. I will have more on him in the morning.

Griz men have scrimmaged the last two nights following the Griz camp. I stayed around and watched some when picking up my son last night. Woods, Cherry and Hutchison were all involved and very visible with their play.

Woods seems a scoring machine and certainly not afraid to shoot. I think he might have passed a couple times! Lefty with decent outside touch but also some inside post moves. He caught it low and dunked off a quick two foot jump several times.....haven't seen that out of a 6'5" swing guy much. I was impressed with his ability to get shots....he really could have looked to not shoot it every time, though.

Cherry showed some of the flashes I've read about here. He almost seemed a little too unselfish at times. Seems he can take to hole quickly and made some great passes. I didn't see the great defense we've read about but he's very quick. His shot and release are a little odd looking but he made a couple tough short range shots on drives.

Hutchison was also fairly impressive and seemed to go toe to toe with Qvale down low. Not quite as big as Qvale but pretty quick, good hands and hustled hard.

A couple other players I didn't recognize and most of the returning Griz were involved. AJ was there but did not play, same with Selvig. Ward played and worked hard inside....a little slow to the hoop when he got it low. McGillis struggled to make any of his shots and Staudechaer was off as well. Virgil Matthews was playing and looked good. Stockton was forced to cover Cherry and seemed to hold his own.....but I think Cherry could take him to the hole more than he tried.

These three new frosh recruits looked good. I'd expect Woods and Cherry to play right away; both seemed very comfortable and confident. Hutchison might need more time but if Selvig remains injury prone he might be forced to play.

Hope to hear about some more summer scrimmage action. It was fun to watch.

Great to hear the young guys did well. Even better, is hearing Woods was there. That must mean he got the school intangibles cleared up.

THANK YOU!!!

Were any other current Griz involved, such as Banny and Taylor? Is there any chance that one of the guys you did not recognize is Rasson Young? Thanks for the report! :)

All three incoming freshman were there.

Banny, M. Taylor, Stockton were also there. As a matter of fact the only Grizzly from last years team who was not there last night was Nyandigisi (Diggs) Moikobu. There were also some high school recruits there including a big 6-8ish curly haired kid, who was garnering some attention.

Banny and Taylor both played and looked OK. Kyle Sharp played as well. Taylor made couple threes but some marginal passing and certainly not as quick as Cherry. Banny didn't stand out but recall him making couple nice inside scores and some rebounds.

Players I didn't recognize were two white shooting guards (I'm not familiar with all the recruits but wonder if they might have been walk ons or possibly campers) and another big guy. Don't think Rasson Young was among them.

I've sometimes been critical myself of pre-season hype regarding our talent. How good are these guys against other Division 1 players? I did find it encouraging that our new frosh were among the most notable (outside of Virgil) on the court.....maybe less encouraging that the returnees didn't shine more.

In regard to the post by mousegriz, what if Mcgillis continues to struggle with his offensive play. What other options do the Griz have? Several times last year,Jack seemed to be out of sorts on the offensive side of the ball and failed to attack the hoop when he drove deep into the key.

I think if the Griz did indeed sign Raason Young, and I am thinking they did otherwise why release Diggs, at 6-5 he will push both McGillis and Staudacher as an aggressive, athletic scorer for either a starting role or as instant offence when either is struggling.

There is an athlete from Corvallis, Riley Bradshaw 6'1 Soph G, that has been getting a lot of talk around the area. He attended Griz camp last week and I wondered if anyone saw him play at camp or with the Griz and what their impression was of him at camp or his chance of landing with a team like the Griz in the future.

I think I may have seen him but the coaches do not puplish any thing like a roster, and for some reason are not real thrilled with giving me the inside scoop on thing  . If it is the kid I was am thinking about, and he is only a sophomore, yes he could be a very nice prospect.

I believe Riley has been playing AAU ball for the last several years. I cannot remember the name of the team, but of the 9 kids on that team, about 1/3 were from Missoula, the other were from Bitteroot area schools such as Corvallis, Hamilton, and Stevensville. They had pretty good team. They held their own against the team Zach Peevey (SP?), played as a freshman for Helgate, and Riley King's team (Sentinel Freshman).

I hope this is the team I am thinking of at least. IF it is, there will be a few more good players from that team coming out of the woodwork the next 2 years.

I have the name of one of the campers at the Griz men's camp that was invited and offered at the camp. His name is Troy Huff a 6-4 guard from Brookfield Academy in Wisconsin. He plays point guard in high school but may is projected as a shooting guard by the recruiting experts, he average 17 points a game bithe his sophomore and junior year. Before the Griz sign him though I hope Tinkle cards him.

I have more info on my blog

mslacat mentioned carli rosenthal from coeur d'alene. any word on her?

Remember Rosenthal would be a 2011 recruit.

I have heard that the Griz are recruiting Rosenthal. She is one of those girls who who is getting a lot attention from a lot of the regional schools in the north west from Gonzaga, Idaho and most of the Big Sky teams. She is a Hollie Tyler type big girl, 6-3, can over power other centers in the paint or take it out to three point land. She is listed on ESPN as a 6-1 power forward / center with a 65 rating, but I think their info is a little dated, she would have to get with the right program to be able to play forward.

More on my blog.

My family was in Missoula this week for the Little Griz day camp for 2nd grade to 4th grade for girls. We camped out all week and drove to the Adams Center every morning-had a great time. The Lady Griz were there in numbers Ali Hurley, Mandy Morales, and quite a few others were there. Not much to report at this level other than the kids learned a lot and had a great time-thank you Lady Griz!
