Griz Basketball interest?

Regardless of opinions of others. Count this fan on board! I will not give up doing my share to help this program, players, and coaches build this program. Unless they do as Kennedy did, I am at every home game!!!! I hope one or a few at a time join me.

I will not stop supporting this staff and players unless given reason not to do so.

I have supported the program even when Kennedy was there. I support the program, the players, and the university. Griz Athletics is bigger than any coach.

there are three factors here:

1. montana is now unquestionably a "football school;"
2. when it comes to a sport, most fans at any school are monogynous (not to be confused with, magnanimous) and so football schools (notre dame, usc, penn state, nebraska, colorado byu, miami) generally do not have great basketball teams, while basketball schools (kentucky, indiana, duke, north carolina) usually do not have good football teams.
3. most football fans at montana do not want to move up.

all of which really hurts basketball--both men's and women's. there is no question we could compete in the wac or even the mwc in basketball, and a move up would be a great thing for fan interest, recruiting, television exposure, revenue. basketball is being sacrificed at the altar of football and the holy devotion to the 1-aa (sub 1-aa? subcompact? subway series?...what do they call it again?) playoff system.

a shame, in my opinion.

I can only speak for myself. Regardless if it is basketball or football, anytime a regional team is on tv, I watch. I agree it is a shame. I watch many regional teams from those conferences. I have not 1 doubt we could compete year in, year out, in basketball and football.

Ci-tay. Find a new crusade

I for one am proud to have the likes of City, Swilly, and GB1 supporting the Universities respected programs. I do not agree 100% of the time with either, but got to hand it to City and the likes, they are consistent in their outlooks with respect for the most part.

You may think a move to WAC or MWC would help the UM basketball programs, if Griz fb team moved up. That could be the case IF in the moveup, the budget for basketball also increased at the sametime.

But, of the three former BSC teams that moved up (Idaho, Boise State, and Nevada), only Nevada seems to have found a good balance between football and basketball, although may be more weighted toward basketball. Their football program did well last season but not so well previous year. Boise State's basketball program is mediocre, and Idaho's basketball program which was a top 10 program in early 80's is one of the worst basketball programs in division 1 (and their football program not so great either even though they funnel so much of their athletic budget into football just to stay in 1A).

Based on what happened to the former Big Sky teams that moved up to 1A in football, there is no guarantee that a move to the WAC or MWC will help the UM basketball teams at all. In fact, the odds are greater it would hurt them unless UM decides to put more emphasis on success with basketball (like Nevada seems to have done), or continue to feed the football dynasty here at UM (which I figure will be most likely to happen, and it would be at the expense of basketball).

Certainly, the UM football program has taken money from the basketball programs since 1995 on. A move up to 1A will likely make it worse for the basketball programs, which in turn make them less able to compete in WAC and MWC. A move up to 1A may help the Football team. A move up to 1A will likely hurt the Lady Griz less than it would hurt the UM Men's basketball program since Selvig tends to recruit more locally than Men's coaches have done and been quite successful at it, too.

Sorry to turn this into a 1A issue but City always brings it up.

hey, i've got a really weird idea - how about considering the possibility that if the griz moved "up" to a 1-a affiliated football conference, we consider that the men's and women's basketball teams, the track teams, the soccer team, and of course the 'i married ms mcdonald'/ denny washington- ish money scroungers etc etc would ALL make an effort to elevate themselves or their contributions so as to make the griz competetive at a higher level??? and maybe, just maybe, they ALL might relish the challenge?

oh wait, that wouldn't leave any room for the "purity" of the i-aa play-offs, which are taken about as seriously by the rest of the world as are the local little league championship baseball games.

i'd contribute tin cans, pop bottles and cigarette butts, plus condoms (used) and leftover chinese for the football signing party.

City, Montana is not a football power..they are considered small time on a national basis. Montana is small college football or NAIA, people just don't know much about UM as a football school. So be it as people just aren't ready to change anything regarding Montana football...the President and AD don't want to rock the boat because the football program generates sizeable revenue and the fans don't want to change because they enjoy watching us beat up on our opponents. If it would be possible for UM to move to a better 1A conference in all sports except football there could be a solution to being mired in the Big Sky Conference. Our football program could stay in the Big Sky/1AA or be independent in football as a 1AA team. Many of us are tired of fighting those avid 1AA people that are afraid of running with the big dogs, so maybe this would be a solution that would appease them and allow UM athletics to move forward. What say you?

Good point, unless you add LSU , Florida, Ohio St., UCLA, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennesee, Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Pitt, Ect.

Notre Dame can only be called a football school if you include a :thumb: at the end of the sentence after what LSU did to them. But they actually have had a very good BB team the last several years.

USC has a good BB team, and one of the top prospects in the nation coming to play for them next year.

Anyhow~ you are wrong.

Louisville does well in both too.

All I know is I would love to see new faces at the games and avg 6k rest of this season at home. We are lame when it comes to supporting basketball. I am tired of excuses when football season is over. With our population and students there is not any legit reasons for not drawing 6k.

Come on GRIZNATION, let bygones be bygones and support this program.
