Griz at Sac Gameday Thread

I agree. And, they are getting better each game. They put two halves together. The Brawl is going to be a good one this year.
Run defense is decent to good. Holding sac to 141 was huge. Made them pass the ball. We need to improve in the secondary. Gave up 337 yards in the air to a team that wasn’t supposed to be great passing the ball. We made them one dimensional though, which was exactly what the gameplan was, so that’s a win for the defense despite the passing yards given up. Shutting sac out for 26 out of 30 minutes in the second half is the real storyline that seems to be getting lost in all the post game whining right now. Sac didn’t score in the second half until there was just 4 minutes left and the games outcome was no longer in question. That’s a dominating defensive effort.

I think though, they played to stop their strength, knowing that they couldn’t beat the Griz by passing. That said, a balanced team is more likely to cause this team fits, being able to do both things relatively well.

True. We’ve got several tune up games now to get better at pass defense. Was Bradford calling the defense differently and coop and t hauck or did we just have a better secondary? Whatever we did that year it was the best the 3-3-5 has ever looked here.

I'd imagine graduating so much talent off that side of the ball, in particular over the last few years, is part of the issue.

Stud ball players don't usually come to a school to sit. Kids want to play immediately and the transfer portal has depleted the depth of many teams. That said, this team seems to be getting better each week; they're building that depth.

Not true. UM has thrown a pass on play 1 in 6 of the 8 games and completed all 6 of them. UM ran for 29 when it handed to Gillman yesterday. And handed to Gillman against UND too, for no gain. In order, completed to Wortham, to Davis, to Davis, to Davis, to Wortham, and to Fonoti.
I admit, it was hyperbole. It just sometimes seems that every series of downs starts with a nonproductive run up the middle.

My honest opinion was that it was a combination of things:
1) Gubner was a force inside that created mismatches for the other defenders coming on the rush.
2) We had very fast and skilled LBs (which we also do now, too).
3) The key players had been in the defensive scheme for years, and knew what to do without having to think.
4) With Loud out, our cornerbacks were much better. Gradney was a fantastic #2, and Walker was maybe the most underrated #1 CB we've had in a long time.
5) They stayed mostly healthy all season.

The changes in calls and scheme we've seen since have been made to mask the lack of the above (except for #2). I imagine if we had all of these things, the defense would look pretty much the same.
